1 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: LOCATION SALARY Senior Lecturer in Animal Management (Zoo & Collection Management) Full Time 37 hours per week Askham Bryan College, York 21,000 35,000 per annum AIMS OF THE JOB: To contribute to programmes within the Animal Management Section and across college where relevant. To carry out the responsibilities of a Lecturer and to teach 860 hours per annum pro rata less any contact time that may be allocated to carry out designated duties as part of this role. To contribute to college s activity and resource development within their specialist area To contribute fully to the promotion of and continued success of the College and Centres. To plan and supervise the learning experience of our students, including whilst on placement. To comply with the policies and procedures of Askham Bryan College and examining and assessment bodies. To ensure compliance with awarding body criteria, relating to learning programmes and assessment criteria within specified curricular programmes. FACILITIES: Full range of facilities at the College/Centre including teaching rooms, study areas and workshops, office space, telephone and access to a computer terminal. RELATIONSHIPS: Responsible to the Section Leader (York) and the Director: Equine and Animal Management. INTERNAL CONTACTS: Deputy Principals, Directors, Section Leaders, Centre Managers, Assistant Section Leaders, Support Staff and Students. 1

2 EXTERNAL CONTACTS: Schools, Careers Services, Awarding bodies, External Verifiers/Examiners, Centre/Technical Advisory Group and employers. LIMITS OF RESPONSIBILITY: The postholder will be responsible for the effective development and operation of the aims of the post. ORGANISATION CHART: MAIN TASKS AND DUTIES To contribute to programmes within the Animal Management Section predominantly at the York centre. To carry out the responsibilities of a Lecturer and to teach 860 hours per annum pro rata less any contact time that may be allocated to carry out designated duties as part of this role. To assist with the development of the curriculum within the Section. To assist with the development of resources and commercial activities within the Section Conform to and co-operate in the execution of the College Strategic Plan. Contribute to the development and review of the Strategic Plan [via the Line Manager]. Complete, on time, routine administrative responsibilities associated with lecturing such as registration, attendance recording, examination and assessment schedules and associated marking, report preparation and compiling action plans and client reviews following administrative procedures. 2

3 To act as a course manager for specified programmes if required. Provide tutorial support for learners whilst in practice and at college Participate in training and development courses, research, secondment and personal contact in order to keep up to date in technical and education expertise as well as those skills necessary to effectively tutor and coach learners. Be an active participant in the promotion of the College, the Centres, Courses and Services. Support the Marketing Staff at Careers events and at shows and demonstrations. Co-operate in the College Appraisal Scheme and subsequently agree an Action Plan and implementation deadlines. Support all managerial staff maintaining premises, the estate, resources and Centres by reporting problems; following and enforcing good behavioural practices in order that the working environment can be maintained in a cost effective and efficient manner. Be vigilant when on College or Centre premises, promoting security of buildings and contents. Act in a friendly and business-like manner in welcoming and assisting the total range of clients and tradespeople to discharge their functions effectively or to enjoy their time at the College or Centre. Take an active part in Teams designed to action and develop effective and efficient programme delivery and to support the College Manager. The role of Course Manager The best course managers are clearly able to influence retention and success rates. Under the responsibility of the Section Leader, a Course Manager is responsible for organising the teaching team to ensure that the student experience is outstanding. Course Managers will liaise with Academic Support Tutors to provide the link to pastoral care and - with support staff - ensure that non-academic elements of the course enable students to achieve. The Course Manager is responsible for the whole programme from end to end. This includes, but is not exclusive to : Marketing content including website and prospectus, proposing and hitting or exceeding recruitment and success targets, interview/pre-course information advice and guidance, enrolment welcome, agreeing student timetables, communication with students and the course team, co-ordinating schemes of work and internal verification plans, liaising with learning support where needed, listening and acting on student feedback, annual course review. From time to time, Course Managers may organise tutorials to review students' academic programme. 3

5 PERSON SPECIFICATION JOB TITLE: Senior Lecturer in Animal Management (Zoo & Collections Management) (York) ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Educated to level six in Animal Management with a specialism in either animal behaviour and training or zoo management Level 2 Numeracy and Literacy or willing to work towards these awards Teaching Certificate or commitment to gaining one in the required time frame PCGE / Cert Ed Doctoral qualification or a willingness to work towards one EXPERIENCE APTITUDES AND ATTRIBUTES CIRCUMSTANCES Substantial experience of working within the animal management industry Dealing with a wide range of customers and clients Good interpersonal skills Able to take responsibility and ownership for courses which they are responsible for Willingness to work flexibly in a team Enthusiasm Self-motivation Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines Excellent organisational and administrative skills Excellent communication skills and ability to liaise with a wide range of people Willing and able to teach at different sites as needed HE or FE Teaching experience HE project supervision Developing new resources / enterprises IT Skills Management experience To be able to work flexible hours including some evenings and occasional weekends June 2012 Willing and able to contribute to evening and weekend events when necessary. 5
