1 Job Description Job: Learning Support Worker Reports to: Learner Support Manager Salary from per hour The above hourly rate reflects the specialist support that is required at Bolton College and is comparable to the college s pay scales. JOB PURPOSE To support students in all aspects of their College programmes. NATURE OF THE POST Provide support to students in tutor designated activities, in the teaching environment, on an individual or group basis, with guidance from the lecturing staff and as directed by the Learning Support Manager. Safeguarding vulnerable children and adults is a priority for all employees. KEY DUTIES 1. Help organise student files 2. Focus students on the instructions and meaning of the learning activity ensuring the student understands the task in hand 3. Promote confidence, motivate and provide guidance and encouragement to the student in whatever activities s/he is undertaking 4. To encourage the student to integrate into the learning group 5. Act as a second authoritive figure in the classroom at appropriate times 6. Ensure students are up to date with their work and liaise with the tutors to identify gaps and assist in getting the student to meet targets 7. Contribute to record keeping systems for students with learning support 8. To support the integration of students into college activities 9. To supervise the students during breaks and meal times when appropriate 10. To provide personal and/or intimate care as required Page 1 of 5

2 11. To work to specific learner guidelines as set out in individual Risk Assessments undertaken by Together Trust 12. To undertake training and continual updating for specific learner needs as identified in individual Risk Assessments (such as peg feeding, first aid and administration of medications and behaviour management training) prior to working with individual learners. Training will be provided by Together Trust. 13. To contribute to individual Risk Assessments by passing on any new support needs as they arise 14. To provide First Aid Support as outlined in individual Risk Assessments undertaken by Together Trust 15. To administer medications as outlined in individual Risk Assessments undertaken by Together Trust in line with their policies and procedures as agreed by the next of kin of individual learners 16. To provide specific behavioural management support as outlined in individual Risk Assessment undertaken by Together Trust. 17. To support student resources/ information seeking related to studies 18. Accompany students on external visits, supporting the student when required 19. Work in partnership with vocational, subject specific and specialist support tutors under the direction of the Student Support Manager 20. Assist in the continuous learning support assessment process as directed 21. Undertake related administrative duties such as assisting in maintaining the learning support record keeping system. 22. To assist in the physical adaptation or production of resources such as enlarging photocopies, transcribing taped notes etc as directed by the Student Support Manager. 23. To assist in setting up specialist equipment to support students 24. To take notes for students as directed 25. To ensure students move safely between locations when under their care 26. To undertake in-house staff development and training as discussed with the Student Support Manager 27. Implement and monitor quality systems 28. Co-operate and liaise with colleagues in the Sector and across the College 29. Participate in the consultative framework of the Sector and the College 30. Comply with Health and Safety Regulations Page 2 of 5

Be fully aware and comply with the College policy on Equality and Diversity Essential Desirable Assessed by Qualifications/ Education Basic literacy & numeracy skills. Level 2 or 3 QCF award in Health & Social Care Children or Adults, or willingness to commence award within the timescales set by the Trust Makaton Emergency First Aid Work Experience Ability to undertake the full range of tasks, in a well planned way that respects & values the students as individuals. Experience of working with or within statutory or voluntary agencies within a community / educational setting. Experience of working with people with disabilities and an awareness of their rights and needs. Awareness of community based projects/activities for Tenants / students Multi-disciplinary approach to meeting clinical, physical and emotional needs. Skills and abilities Flexibility to respond to the needs of the students. Good communication and interpersonal skills Good organisational and time management skills. 5 Additional information The work at the Trust for those working directly with the service users can on occasion be physically demanding and employees must be able to undertake in full the requirements of the job and requisite training. For the safety of staff and the service users, training will be provided to assist employees to carry out their role, specifically the Movement & Management of Loads & People, Emergency First Aid and PROACT SCIPr UK training (this provides staff with the skills to carry out the sometimes necessary safe holds in a non threatening way).
