1 LONDON BOROUGH OF TOWER HAMLETS St Paul s Way Trust School JOB DESCRIPTION Post Title: Director of the Teaching School and School of Education (SoE Director) Grade: Inner London Pay Spine Range: L18-L22 Department: Senior Leadership Team Date: Required for April / Sep 2016 Responsible to: Senior Deputy Headteacher / Headteacher INTRODUCTION In addition to the duties covered by the School Teacher s Pay and Conditions Document, as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team the SoE Director will be a strategic leader in the development and implementation of policy and in monitoring key aspects of academic provision. The following are generic responsibilities of the post: 1. Basic principles To write sections of the School Development Plan as required. To develop, monitor and implement school policies as required. To act as a behavioural role model to staff and students. To actively work to engage parents and carers in all aspects of their child s learning. To promote the school ethos through leading assemblies. To ensure accountability through regular reviews of progress and monitoring. To provide support and challenge to all staff. To ensure that St Paul s Way Trust School policy and practice reflects a commitment to equal opportunities and inclusion. To ensure that procedures for safeguarding children are in place and followed by all staff. 2. Learning and Teaching To act as a lead professional in the classroom promoting the highest standards of learning. To coach and mentor staff and students to become more effective learners, teachers and leaders.

2 To promote the highest standards throughout the organisation and to challenge underachievement in all its forms. To promote high expectations from and towards all members of the school community. To stretch and challenge the most able learners and those with Additional Educational Needs. To promote a successful learning culture that will enable pupils to become effective, enthusiastic, independent learners committed to lifelong learning. 3. Working with Others As a member of the school s Senior Leadership Team to contribute to building and maintaining a culture of high expectations and achievement. To advise and liaise with members of the Governing Body as appropriate and ensure that they have an accurate understanding of the impact of your work within the school. To work with our broader community to promote St Paul s Way Trust School and its role as a National Teaching School. To line-manage other Senior Leaders (Directors of Learning), SLEs and LPs, Heads of Faculty, and other staff as required. To develop relationships with our Trust Partners and other partner organisations to ensure that students and staff at the school benefit from exceptional development opportunities. 4. Raising aspirations To agree challenging targets for achievement ensuring that these are reviewed systematically and regularly through improvement plans. To ensure that underachieving faculties, departments, teams, or individual staff are supported appropriately. 5. Effective use of staff and resources To manage a delegated budget and produce financial management plans as appropriate. To ensure financial and other resources are well used, minimising waste and ensuring best value. To have a lead responsibility for the recruitment, retention and deployment of staff within the teams that you line manage. Specific Duties: To lead on developing and communicating the aims, objectives and vision of the School of Education To write the School of Education School Development Plan and Teaching School Action Plan as required. To develop a high quality School of Education provision offer and ensure this is well marketed to other schools. To lead and oversee the research and development of new projects including within school support programmes and school to school support programmes.

3 To lead and oversee the writing of funding applications to support the work of the School of Education and Teaching School. To Line-manage the School of Education Senior Leadership Team to ensure ambitious school targets are met or exceeded. To Chair the regular School of Education Senior Leadership Team meetings. To oversee the commissioning and management of deployments of other SPWT staff including Lead Practitioners (LPs)and Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs). To oversee the development, leadership and management of the quality of provision cycle within the school including all relevant Monitoring, Evaluation and Review (MER) processes to ensure that provision for all learners is outstanding. To provide guidance and support to middle leaders and other staff in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning. To develop and oversee the school s strategy for raising standards of literacy. To create an environment where staff are supported and challenged so that high performance is the norm. To ensure all staff have access to high quality professional development programmes and to design and implement systems for the effective management and evaluation of these programmes. To lead the development, implementation and evaluation of the school s annual INSET programme. To lead school self-review and evaluation and the effective planning and management of school resources. To take a significant role in the implementation of the school s performance management policy, to secure school improvement and individual professional development. To oversee the leadership and management of the induction process for Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs). To oversee the leadership and management of ITT programmes. To take a lead role in the development and management of the School s summer schools including the Science Summer School To oversee outreach programmes in local primary schools. To ensure that student voice and leadership has a clear impact on learning provision within the school (Student Leaders of Learning, Student Take-Over Programmes etc.) OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To attend Achievement and Standards Meetings leading on relevant items. To attend other key meetings within the school as required in accordance with school policy and to lead such meetings as required. To take whole school assemblies and to support other staff with assemblies. To prepare and present reports, as required to, e.g. Headteacher Foundation School, SLT, governors, LA, parents, external agencies. Undertake any other duty as specified by the STPCD not mentioned above. To undertake both internal and external deployments relating to the School of Education and its work as a National Teaching School

4 To contribute to Quality of Provision meetings as required, working together with Directors of Learning and Heads of Faculty to develop age specific policies and procedures around standards across subjects. To carry out appraisal for staff as directed. To line manage lead practitioners To oversee the mapping of the curriculum coverage of SRE across the relevant year groups. To oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of an age specific programme of education around healthy living, including mental health, and sex and relationships (SRE curriculum). To lead the organisation of public events related to the School of Education s work. In addition to the above, specific responsibilities, the post holder will carry out any other reasonable duties relevant to the role as directed by the Head teacher. This Job Description may be reviewed at the end of the academic year or earlier if necessary. In addition, it may be amended at any time after consultation with you.
