WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND THIS COURSE Emergency departments are the front line of health care in this country, providing an extraordinary public safety function. Health care delivery is changing rapidly and emergency care is no exception. This educational activity provides an opportunity for physicians involved in the delivery of emergency medicine to review important topics and discuss recent advances. The course also serves as a setting where physicians peripherally involved in emergency care may receive education that will expand their horizons. As a result of course participant evaluations and community physician annual needs assessment surveys, the need for cutting edge information about emergency medicine has been identified. The course is designed to change physician competence in areas identified in the needs assessments, including difficult airway management, pediatric emergency care, ultrasound for dyspnea and vascular access, management of strokes, trauma management, heat illness, altitude illness, lightning strikes, and resistant infections. This year s four-day conference will specifically address these identified educational needs and provide practitioners with state-of-the-art tools to provide improved treatment options for their patients. Faculty presenting and interacting with participants at this activity have been selected on the basis of their comprehensive clinical experience and academic excellence. EDUCATIONAL METHODS Lectures with Q and A will be used to facilitate the dissemination of up-to-date information Case studies and discussion will highlight conditions commonly seen in clinical practice Panel discussions will be used to provide an opportunity for experts to present differing viewpoints on various topics or issues Hands-on skill building workshops are included to provide attendees with the opportunity to practice skills EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the end of the activity, participants should be able to: Apply the pertinent medical knowledge in adult and pediatric diagnosis and resuscitation Explain the management of patients with abdominal pain, skin disorders, red eyes, resistant infections, bites, lightning injuries, heat illness, and high altitude illness Outline the approach and tools used in difficult airway management Perform ultrasound for vascular access, pediatric abdominal pain, and dyspnea Incorporate tranexamic acid use in appropriate hemorrhaging trauma patients Choose evidence-based treatment for stroke and anticoagulant reversal Identify and treat patients with measles and pertussis according to current guidelines
