5 Course Description This course will present biological models of addictive disorders and evidenced-based treatments of addictions. Topics will incorporate new research on the biological basis for genomic subtypes of addiction. Emphasis will be on the translation of basic science to the clinic, strategies for pharmacotherapy, incorporating a biologic framework of addiction into addiction psychoeducation and programming, and individualized approaches to the treatment of addictions with comorbid psychiatric diagnoses. Outcomes based research using clinical electronic databases to enhance follow-up will also be discussed as well as the bioethics guiding the assessment and treatment of addiction as an illness. This course will focus on clinical implications of biological etiological models for the treatment of addiction and co-morbid psychiatric and medical disorders. It will offer 2 credits in clinical ethics and 3 credits of diversity training in the field, which are a licensure requirement for Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors. Course Learning Objectives Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Identify common co-occurring psychiatric disorders in alcoholic patients and standard assessment approach and treatment strategies Describe the four basic principles for consideration in medical ethics and apply those principles to specific cases arising in clinical practice with addicted patients Identify diverse populations in addiction treatment settings and characterize potential issues for consideration in developing a personalized plan to foster recovery needs Attendance at this Mayo course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the performance of any procedures which may be discussed or taught in this course. Intended Audience Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors, Social Workers, and Psychologists working in the field of Addictions. Physicians, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and Physician Extenders involved in the treatment of patients with addictions. Credit College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
