The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration has required Florida hospitals to submit POA on all inpatient discharges since Jan. 1, Learn from the Florida Hospital Association what the impact has been on the public reporting of hospital mortality and patient safety indicators. Hear directly from a Florida hospital about how the hospital implemented POA coding, who was involved, steps taken and what lessons have been learned in the interim. FACULTY Kim Streit, M.B.A., M.H.S., vice president, health care research and information, Florida Hospital Association, Orlando, Fla. Streit is responsible for data analysis and tracking issues and trends impacting Florida hospitals. Her areas of special concentration include the uninsured, managed care, hospital report cards and hospital preparedness. As part of her responsibilities, Streit has authored numerous reports on health care trends in Florida, the nursing and allied health professional shortage, the uninsured and financial issues impacting hospitals. Streit has been with FHA since 1986 and holds a Bachelor in Business Administration from Stetson University and a Master in Business Administration and Master in Health Administration from the University of Florida. Wendy Iravedra, RHIA, CHP, director, health information management and privacy officer, Memorial Hospital West, Pembroke Pines, Fla. In her role at Memorial Hospital West one of five facilities of the Memorial Healthcare System in South Florida Iravedra is responsible for strategizing and implementing the direction of the department, including coding and billing operations, compliant documentation management and telecommuting programs. She also acts as the privacy officer for the facility, which she joined in Prior to her current role, Iravedra was a consultant for a national firm for outsourcing health information management. She also has worked in managed care and in teaching and urban facilities in various management capacities of health information management. Iravedra served as the chair for the AHIMA Council on Certification and held various state association professional offices, including president, for the Illinois HIMA. She has an associate s degree in health information management from Moraine Valley Community College and holds a Bachelor in Health Care Administration from DePaul University. CONTINUING EDUCATION Continuing Education Certificates for proof of attendance will be issued to all registrants attending this session. These certificates should be placed on file at your hospital as evidence of attendance. Some national, state and local licensing

4 boards and professional organizations will grant continuing education credits for attendance when you submit the course outline (save the brochure) and your certificate of attendance. If your discipline is not listed below for pre-approved continuing education, it is recommended that you contact your own board or certification organization to find out what is required. The Texas Hospital Association is authorized to award to 1.5 hours of pre-approved Category II (non-ache) continuing education credit for this program toward advancement or recertification in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Participants in this program wishing to have the continuing education hours applied toward Category II credit should list their attendance when making application to ACHE for advancement or recertification. This course(s) may be submitted to the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy for 1.0 CPE contact hour. THA has registered with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy as a CPE sponsor. This registration does not constitute an endorsement by the Board as to the quality of the program. The Texas Hospital Association is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. This activity meets Type I criteria for mandatory continuing education requirements toward relicensure as established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas. Successful completion of this audioconference provides 1.5 contact hours. Approval as a provider refers only to recognition of the continuing education activity and does not imply endorsement or approval of any commercial product by the Texas Nurses Association, the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation or the Texas Hospital Association. Transfer from one THA education program to another is not permitted, and no financial credit will be granted. If a registrant cancels, the registration fee, less a 20 percent service charge, is refundable only if THA receives notice in writing at least five business days prior to the program.
