More than 60 local and national companies along with individuals, donated over $120,000. There were 18 local vendors in the promenade of shops. Furthermore, the community fully participated in this event by completing more than 250 hours of volunteer service. Defining an Equestrian Audience Equestrian competitors and enthusiasts constitute an ideal market for high quality products and services. (An American Horse Council Study indicates that the industry has a $102 billion impact on the economy via direct and indirect spending annually). As a group, they are well educated, have ample disposable income and time to use it in pursuit of their passions. Other factors, including age and profession, make them a perfect target audience for corporations seeking an upscale market. Research compiled from the U.S. Equestrian Federation offers these indicators of the buying power and influence by horse enthusiasts: a majority are between 34-54 years of age 66% have a college degree or better 38% have net worth OVER $500,000 43% take more than 16 airline trips a year 94% own a pet besides a horse nearly 1/3 of exhibitors have a post-graduate education average income is $185,000 80% make or influence purchasing decisions at work own an average of 4 Horses Compete 6 times per year 30 average nights per year in a hotel Equestrian Sports Snapshot Equestrian Jumping is one of the world s fastest-growing sports in terms of both number of participants and event viewership. Equestrian jumping is growing at the same rate that NASCAR racing enjoyed five years ago. Equestrian membership has grown each of the last four years with more than 3.6 million people participating in horse showing in the United States. Among young riders, ages 16-21, equestrian membership has grown 300 percent. Page 7
History of the Hunter Derby In late 18th century England, jumping became an essential feature of the sport of fox hunting when the Enclosures Act in England permitted land owners to fence in their property. Those who wished to continue fox hunting had to find horses that could jump. Almost a century later in France, the practice of jumping horses across the countryside became popular. The French would hold parades and celebrations where spectators would gather to watch the horses take off into the countryside. This practice did not last long because the spectators often could not see past the first jump. Soon after, the competitions were moved into arenas and became known as leaping competitions. Now, after nearly 200 years, the Derby Series and Final have been developed to bring the lost art of tradition and horsemanship back to the show ring. What is a Hunter Derby? Bringing The Sport Back To Its Roots The International Hunter Derby Program was created to bring show hunters to the international level, to increase spectator interest, media and sponsorship interest, and to bring tradition and basic riding principles back to the sport of showing hunters. The Derby will be run using a two round format. Round One: A Hunter Classic Course consisting of a minimum of 10 jumps at 3 6-4 0, with a maximum of 25% of the jumps set at 3 6. There must be four 4 0-4 3 fences in the course set as option jumps. Obstacles to simulate those reminiscent of the hunt field such as: natural post and rail, stone wall, white board fence or gate, coop, aiken, hedge, oxer, brush, logs, banks or ditches. Round one will be judged on style and brilliance. Round Two: A minimum of 12 horses will return for a Handy Hunter Course. A minimum of 8 fences will be set at 3 6-4 0, with a maximum of 25% of the jumps set at 3 6. There must be four 4 0-4 3 option fences. The course should simulate riding over trappy hunt country and must have a minimum of at least 3 handy options, such as: tight turn options, different track options, clever options for jump approaches, pen type obstacles, hand gallop a jump, trot a lowered obstacle, walk over an obstacle not to exceed 18 in height, lead over an obstacle, halt and/or back, open gate while mounted. Round Two is to be judged on style, brilliance and handiness. A maximum of 10 bonus points per judge may be awarded to each horse/rider combination for handiness of round and brilliance of pace. Each team of judges will provide one score, and the scores from each team will be combined for the overall total for each horse. Page 8
