Our clinical expertise and emotional support network help many thousands of people every day to find a way to live with, through and beyond breast cancer. We were founded in 1973 by Betty Westgate, who knew from her own experience of breast cancer that there was a lack of information and support for women like her. Since then we ve helped millions of women and their families through our face to face, phone and online services. We promote the importance of early detection, and we campaign for better support and care, involving people with breast cancer in all that we do. We also offer training for specialist breast care nurses and opportunities for them to share best practice. Our information is used by breast care teams across the UK. JOB PURPOSE: Working with the Director of Fundraising & and the Senior Management Team, the Assistant Director has strategic and operational responsibility for all aspects of external and internal communications, marketing, brand management and celebrity, patron & ambassador relationship management for the charity. OUR VISION: Every person affected by breast cancer receives the best treatment, information and support. OUR MISSION: To help people find a way to live with, through and beyond breast cancer. FLEXIBILITY: In order to work effectively in a changing environment, flexibility is required from the post-holder. Any other tasks that may be requested will be at the same level of responsibility and terms and conditions of employment. The post-holder must be prepared to travel throughout the UK and to work varying hours. 1

3 YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES: To be responsible for the strategic planning, operational management and delivery of all external communication and marketing activities. To ensure that Breast Cancer Care achieves significant and continual growth in awareness and engagement levels. To develop robust means of measurement and reporting on all marketing, communications, media and public relations activities to demonstrate return on investment. To be responsible for the strategic planning and operational management of a UK-wide internal communications strategy. So that all staff are informed of key business messages, organisational news, issues and direction and have mechanisms for providing feedback. Ensure clear communication and establish excellent working relationships with a range of internal and external audiences. And to work closely with Breast Cancer Care s senior clinical and service delivery experts to proactively seek out appropriate stories. To develop and maintain relationships with key people in the media and communications sector. To work closely with the Heads, SMT, Trustees and key staff within the organisation to ensure effective development of the charity s fundraising and campaigning products, partners and activities. To support the Senior Ambassador and Celebrity Relations in maintaining positive and productive relationships with our celebrities, ambassadors and patrons. To be responsible for the delivery of all charity wide integrated fundraising, marketing and profile raising campaigns. And ensure each has clear goals, audiences, targets, priorities and objectives. To act as the organisation s brand guardian, working alongside colleagues within marketing and publishing teams to approve the day to day application of the brand identity decisions. And ensure that all teams throughout the charity have clear guidance on brand parameters and processes. To act as a spokesperson on behalf of the organisation when required. To provide leadership and guidance to fundraising teams on effective demonstration of the charity s case for support across the whole range of communications channels and adjusted for each audience as necessary. Set annual budgets, monitor expenditure monthly and provide forecasts on expenditure as required throughout the financial year. And agree the allocation of staff time against annual strategic plans, monitor quarterly and renegotiate priorities with associated teams when necessary. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: EXPERIENCE Significant communications experience, ideally within the voluntary sector. Proven experience of formulating and implementing successful communications strategies to build a brand, raise money and awareness or create behaviour change. A practical understanding of marketing and experience of developing and managing communications strategies in pursuit of marketing objectives. Demonstrable success in developing and implementing targeted, integrated communications programmes. Demonstrable experience of brand management and development processes. Experience of strategic planning, project development and implementation. Demonstrable experience of successfully handling sensitive issues through a strategic communications approach. The ability to represent the organisation in a senior capacity and nurture networks for the benefit of the organisation. Excellent knowledge of the media landscape including traditional media, digital channels, and social media. SKILLS Confident networker with an ability to form alliances and partnerships with key players. Confident and professional manner able to develop good working relationships / ability to work in partnership with people at all levels both internally and externally. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Good intellectual ability to rapidly assimilate, digest and communicate complex ideas and information from a wide variety of sources. Sound knowledge of different content formats and managing a communications plan across appropriate channels. Ability to appropriately interact and influence the Senior Management Team. Exceptional leadership, management and communications skills with the ability to work with key stakeholders and engage them in the process. Capable of clear and effective delegation and performance management. Ability to organise, prioritise and schedule work within an agreed set of priorities. 4
