1 Technical Manager Job Role and Description Reporting to the Programming and Producing Manager and working as part of the creative team, this role is to ensure the highest quality technical operation of the venue and of any event which contributes to the Pavilion Dance South West programme, including dance, music, film, conferences and special events, both at the venue and off site, as required. The post holder will also provide technical support to clients hiring spaces within Pavilion Dance. Responsibilities of the role include the setting up, operation and maintenance of equipment and managing both the in house technician as well as freelance technical staff. The post holder will also support the delivery of the organisation s artist development programme through working alongside resident artists during the creation of new work. Responsible to: Works closely alongside: Programming and Producing Manager Venue Manager Head of Creative Programmes Youth and Education Coordinator Salary: 18,000-24,000 Terms: Full time permanent contract. Probationary period: 6 months. Notice period: 3 months. Holiday entitlement: 25 days and bank holidays Hours: Base: 37 hours per week on average across a year Pavilion Dance South West, Bournemouth Note: This role includes shift work, night and weekend working, working at height and manual lifting
2 Detailed key responsibilities Technical Management 1. Ensure that the highest technical and artistic standards are achieved in every aspect of the production process 2. Liaise with companies regarding technical requirements, providing support and advice 3. Support artists and companies with work in development and other venues as appropriate 4. Prepare risk assessments for the performances, equipment and events in collaboration with the Front of House Manager (facilities and technical) 5. Line manage and support the role of Technician and any freelance technical staff employed 6. Develop and maintain excellent working relations with BHLive technical staff 7. Manage the annual PAT testing of all technical equipment and ensure all technical equipment is on the technical inventory 8. Manage the technical consumables budgets Technician Duties 1. Set up and run events at Pavilion Dance or any other location 2. Participate in rehearsals and production meetings 3. Design and programme lighting and sound for any PDSW or hire event 4. Comply with working at height, LOLER, COSHH, PPE, PUWER regulations and ensure the theatre and technical storage areas are kept safe and tidy 5. Clean, maintain and repair all technical equipment and assist with any general maintenance of Pavilion Dance 6. Assist the FOH team with the set up of technical equipment in spaces for classes/meetings 7. Supervise any trainees, volunteers and casual staff Administration 1. Prepare technical rotas 2. Offer a positive and supportive environment for the technician, encouraging and empowering their development 3. Contract casual technicians as per requirements and in association with your line manager 4. Contribute to evaluation reports for hires and programmes 5. Keep up to date with developments in the industry, changes to regulations and lead on updating infrastructure and kit as required Other 1. 4 Knowledge / Demonstrate high-level competency in the operation & design of lighting & sound equipment under performance conditions Up to date awareness of Health & Safety legislation, LOLER, PUWER and risk assessments Knowledge of technical requirements for staging and performances including sound, lighting, audiovisual, get-ins, get-out s and set up Knowledge and understanding of the theory of lighting design, focussing and patching Use of Congo lighting control Use of Soundcraft/Yamaha Sound Mixers Knowledge of knot types and tying CAD Drawing (Auto Cad Lite & Visio) Skills / Rigging experience Proven high standard of attention to detail and follow through Excellent communication skills Demonstrable ability to provide effective customer service Self motivated Proven ability to work as part of a team Other / Working at heights Shift work Late night working Elevated Platform IPAF 3A licence First Aid Training (or ability to obtain) Enhanced CRB
5 Organisation Background and Context Background Dance South West was launched in April 2004 and was awarded National Dance Agency status in Until September 2010, its principal role was as the key strategic agency for the South-West of England, networking with a larger group of dance development agencies in the region enabling a joined-up approach to delivery through working with venues, artists and other partners. Current Context At that time, Dance South West worked from a serviced office in Bournemouth. In September 2010, thanks to capital investment of 3.29m by Bournemouth Borough Council, Dance South West was able to launch Pavilion Dance a new centre of excellence for dance. Based within the Pavilion Theatre on the seafront at Bournemouth, the centre consists of two dance studios and a well-equipped small-scale theatre (180 seats) and outdoor performing spaces. It has excellent backstage facilities and cinema quality screening and projection facilities. The developed organisation, Pavilion Dance South West, is committed to: being one of a small number of National Dance Houses across England, championing the art form and working collaboratively nationally and internationally to present and produce the highest quality dance being a regional and sub national hub for specialist dance services and expertise, supporting a range of partner organisations offer an exemplar, excellent programme of performance, participation and engagement locally Funding Arrangements Pavilion Dance South West has secured National Portfolio funding from from Arts Council England. The organisation has committed investment from Bournemouth Borough Council until 2016, renewable for further three year terms beyond this, and is considered to be a key cultural asset locally with regional and national significance and reach.
