Head of British Programmes and Academic Quality Director Visiting Lecturers, team leadership, line management duties MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Programme Leader is the team leader of the course team, manages the effectiveness of the programme and its vision in collaboration with the team. The Programme Leader ensures the smooth running, organisation and operation of the course and works in close collaboration with other staff to ensure the highest possible level of student achievement. The Programme Leader has a clear overview of the portfolio of programmes within the school to ensure effective internal progression between levels. The postholder will be expected to take an active role in fulfilling the strategic objectives of the School. The postholder will uphold the professional ethos of the School and share in the corporate responsibility for the academic well-being of all students. The details of this job specification will be reviewed from time to time according to the changing needs, functions and circumstances of the University. Detailed timetable is agreed each year with the Head of Programmes. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES To develop the excellence, quality of activities and standards within the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design and its reputation and competitiveness both nationally and internationally; To lead the vision and direction of the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design programme including teaching, learning, assessment throughout the programme in its entirety; overseeing and developing the schedules of study and projects across all stages of the curriculum, working with other lecturers to design, develop and deliver a variety of teaching and learning experiences and innovations and assessment materials; To lead aspects of the writing and development of the curriculum, including annual review, periodic review and enhancement and other developments across the School; To carry out the team leadership role including the organising and supervising of work of others on the team, regular team meetings and other associated activity in a collaborative and inclusive manner; To lead specific aspects of the programme including stage leadership, contributing to all aspects of teaching where appropriate; To oversee and be responsible for the pastoral care of students and aspects of student support; JD FAD BHSAD

2 To ensure high quality academic standards through effective leadership and vision leading to high retention and achievement contributing towards the development of the national and international reputation of the programme and maintaining a high quality student experience; To work closely with other senior academic staff and liaise with support staff where necessary within the School to ensure students are fully prepared for internal progression through levels of study; To facilitate and organise educational visits for students where appropriate to compliment their study; To develop the learning resources for the course including liaising with the Learning Resources Centre; To observe good practices in health and safety, and ethical matters and advise students accordingly; Full contribution to recruitment, interviews, marketing activities and School profile development on and off site, including some potential international travel for recruitment or partnership development purposes; To carry out any necessary administration, including the maintaining of student records; timetabling; resource management and development; resource liaison with technical staff; To carry out all necessary quality assurance processes and administration for the purposes of enhancing the student experience; To play an active part in the success of the British programmes in the School through supporting the work of the Head of Programmes, leading projects and developments within the department; To play an active part in the running and development of the School by membership of committees, multi-disciplinary activity etc. as necessary; To undertake such tasks, duties and responsibilities as the Head of Programmes and Academic Quality Director may determine necessary; The postholder is expected to travel and work off site from time to time and work some evenings and weekends. The majority of these activities would be planned in advance; The postholder will uphold the professional ethos of both the School and the University of Hertfordshire and share in the corporate responsibility for the academic well-being of students within the School; to establish and maintain constructive working relationships with colleagues and to cooperate with them on the development and continuous improvement of the work of the School. 3 SUPERVISION RECEIVED The postholder reports to the Head of Programmes and Academic Quality Director but is expected to operate with a substantial degree of autonomy in carrying out the above responsibilities and duties. SUPERVISION GIVEN The postholder will work closely with and act as line manager to lecturers teaching on the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design and is expected to supervise the work of visiting lecturers. RELATIONSHIPS/CONTACTS Internal: External: Lecturers, technical officers, professional staff, senior management team of the School Relevant professional bodies, expert and educational networks, industry bodies and professional contacts This document outlines the duties required, for the time being, of the post entitled Programme Leader Foundation Diploma in Art & Design to indicate the level of responsibility. It is not intended to be a comprehensive or inclusive list and the Head of Programmes and Academic Quality Director may vary duties, from time to time, which do not change the general character of the job or the level of responsibility entailed. This post exists due to a change of role with the current Programme Leader who from September 2013 will have an input on the HE programmes in the capacity of Senior Lecturer on BA (Hons) Graphic Design & Illustration (0.5) whilst assuming the role of Associate Programme Leader Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (0.5). WORK AND OTHER RELEVANT EXPERIENCE Essential Track record of leadership of courses or units/modules and administrative experience within education Proven experience of collaborative and team working, including team leadership Recent experience of the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design programme and curriculum Extensive experience of teaching a subject relevant to the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design Experience of teaching and assessment at FE level including internal verification and moderation; experience of student portfolio preparation Knowledge of a wide variety of art and design subject areas; specialist subject knowledge and skills within a specific art and design subject area Conversant with a broad range of traditional, digital and emerging media, techniques, processes and technologies and the ability to teach these to students Awareness of current contemporary art and design practices; understanding of the social, economic and cultural debates that underpin contemporary Art / Design High-level communication, interpersonal and presentation skills; able to relate to a diverse student group, for many of whom English being a second language Enthusiasm and commitment to working with students (at an FE level) Multi media presentation skills for use in teaching and the design of learning activities Desirable Knowledge of contemporary learning, teaching and assessment issues Experience of teaching at both further and higher education level Experience of working overseas JD FAD BHSAD

6 CONTEXT The Post This is an important appointment for the school and an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our existing team to lead a thriving and dynamic, internationally facing, Foundation Diploma in Art & Design programme within a vibrant and unique Art School in the centre of Moscow. Since its inception 10 years ago, The British Higher School of Art & Design in Moscow has established itself as one of the most important educational centres in Russia with our reputation for high quality Art & Design provision becoming recognised internationally. A cornerstone to this success is our on-going partnership with the School of the Creative Arts at The University of Hertfordshire, with whom we have worked closely since the very beginning. There are approximately 150 full time and 50 part time students on the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design programme. The programme adheres to a UK Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design specification and structure with the addition of timetabled English classes. There are currently four specialist pathways in Fine Art, Fashion, 3D Design and Communication Design. Each subject pathway has a pathway leader who focuses on and co-ordinates the delivery of their subject and pastoral care to their students. The Programme Leader oversees all delivery on the programme ensuring the highest possible standards of teaching and learning take place ensuring an excellent student experience. The programme is taught in English with the atmosphere and level of work produced by students comparable to UK Level 3 Foundation Art & Design programmes. The primary objective of the course is to prepare students for progression onto one of our seven BA (Hons) Degree programmes (all of which are accredited by our partner institution The University of Hertfordshire). Our ambitions are to further develop and raise the current level of academic achievement in order to establish an excellent reputation and profile for the course both nationally and internationally. In turn this will continue to raise the quality of our already successful Degree programmes and establish The British Higher School of Art & Design in Moscow as a competitive choice to obtain a high quality British Art & Design education outside of the UK. Whilst applications from all specialist subject areas are welcome, we are particularly interested in hearing from applicants with either a Fine Art or 3D/spatial design background. The British Higher School of Art and Design (Moscow) The British Higher School of Art & Design was established in Moscow in 2003 to fulfil the need for the provision of high quality, reputable, internationally facing Art & Design education within Russia. In it s relatively short existence, the school has established itself as one of the most important educational centres in Russia. A cornerstone to this success is our on-going partnership with the School of the Creative Arts at The University of Hertfordshire, with whom we have worked closely since the schools inception. The University of Hertfordshire validates all of our undergraduate degrees and as such we work in accordance with and to the standards required of UK Higher Education provision. The initial agreement between institutions saw the first two years of the degree programmes delivered at BHSAD in Russia, with students completing their final third year at UH in England. However, in May 2012 the programmes were re-validated to allow delivery for the full three years of the BA (Hons) Degree s in Moscow. Subsequently this now allows The British Higher School of Art and Design to offer students the unique opportunity of a full British Art & Design education and Undergraduate Degree without having to leave Russia. There are two educational routes offered at the school British undergraduate programmes and Russian Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes. Students enrolling onto the British undergraduate programmes are taught in English and JD FAD BHSAD

7 typically undertake a one-year Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (incorporating English language classes) before progressing onto one of the 7 undergraduate programmes accredited by The University of Hertfordshire. Students on our degree programmes have the option of choosing to finish their 3rd year of study either in Moscow or at The University of Hertfordshire. Students enrolling onto the Russian CPD programmes are taught in Russian by local and international industry professionals. There are numerous specialist programmes offered which due to their nature normally follow a part time mode of delivery over weekends and evenings. As such the school is always active with a constant flow of activity and students within the schools buildings. Note that for this post the post holder will only be involved with the British undergraduate programmes. An additional 3 schools have opened over the last 5 years Moscow Film School, School of Computer Graphics Scream School and Moscow Architectural School MARCH, who along with The British Higher School of Art & Design are members of a consortium of independent educational institutions representing first-class education within the creative industries. Combined, the 4 schools offer provision to approximately 2000 students across a wide spectrum of art, design, media, animation, film and TV, design management and critical and contextual studies. British programmes at BHSAD There are approximately 450 students currently studying across the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design and the BA (Hons) Degree programmes. There are around 15 permanent and 20 visiting lecturers contributing towards these programmes. The majority of these staff members have either originated from, or have spent time and were educated in the UK. The School has a strong philosophy of supporting student success through creativity, enterprise (social or business) and contemporary technical / digital skills. Key characteristics of the School are: Emphasis on creativity and innovation, alongside professional practice and employability for both students and staff Shared resources available to students and staff Project-rich environment with many external and internal collaborations in progress International partnerships and encouragement of international networking and perspectives Attractive fees in comparison to UK and other international HE institutions All students on British programmes have a permanent studio / base room allocated to them Contemporary learning environment with many studios featuring double height ceilings with mezzanine levels High profile collaborations and partnerships with international companies such as Hewlett Packard, Adobe and ASUS Strong links with local industry including branches of large international agencies and local cultural organisations such as The Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture Located in central Moscow within a new Arts complex in one of Moscow s Art districts Numerous galleries located within a 10 minute walk from the school Relationship with the British Council allowing for potential collaborations from visiting practitioners as has been the case to date Some of the areas that the School is currently working on include: Increasing the number of international students across the programmes through promotion and targeting UK and European prospective students International partnerships and networks Development of the professional practice and research environment across the School Employability, internships and supporting students into work Growth of the Fine Art department through local and international collaborations and JD FAD BHSAD

8 partnerships Expansion and development of technical resources within printmaking and sculpture Development of large format digital printing and 3D prototyping facilities in collaboration with Roland as part of their Roland Academy global initiative Research in the School All staff are expected to be involved in research. This takes a variety of forms from the highest level academic research and professional practice at an excellent international level to work of national or regional significance. All research involves working in the public domain through artefacts, publications, exhibitions or other forms. Lecturers are expected to bid for external funding for commercial or research work and can then get approval for buy out of teaching and other duties. Staff development Staff new to teaching often have to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Education which is a 60 credit course running over two years. Other staff development is available external to the School.
