1 London Wildlife Trust Site and Project Manager Centre for Wildlife Gardening Job Description and Person Specification Responsible to: Located at: Responsible for: Staff Management: Regional Development Manager South Centre for Wildlife Gardening, 28 Marsden Road, London SE15 4EE Centre for Wildlife Gardening Senior Site and Projects Officer CWGCommunity Project Officer- Potted History, sessional workers, freelancers and volunteers Overall Responsibilities: To manage the delivery of activities, projects and services provided by London Wildlife Trust at and from the Centre for Wildlife Gardening and neighbouring areas. To be responsible for all aspects of the management of the Centre for Wildlife Gardening including line managing project staff, coordinating sessionals and freelancers as well as volunteers. Main areas of responsibility Staff and project management: 1) To line manage and supervise site and project staff working at and from the Centre for Wildlife Gardening and in the neighbouring areas; this includes full-time and part-time staff, sessional workers, and freelancers and volunteers; 2) To act as project manager for projects running at and from the site, including monitoring and reporting to funders; 3) To coordinate and manage delivery of a diverse programme of services and activities that promote the work of the Trust, funded by LB Southwark including monitoring and reporting to LBS, and to maintaining effective liaison with relevant officers and members of LBS; 4) To plan for and coordinate resources for Centre for Wildlife Gardening and associated Projects in line with allocated budgets; 5) To ensure the development and sustainability of activities provided at and from the Centre for Wildlife Gardening by working collaboratively with the fundraising team and the Regional Development Manager - South to develop projects and services; Protecting London s wildlife for the future The London Wildlife Trust is a company limited by guarantee registered in England and Wales no and registered charity no
2 6) To maximise and develop the quality and scope of the Trust s outdoor learning offer through managing the Senior Site and Projects Officer to work towards a Learning Outside the Classroom Quality badge for Centre for Wildlife Gardening; 7) To maximise and develop the quality and scope of the Trust s volunteering work, managing the Senior Site and Projects Officer to deliver volunteer and corporate workdays on site including the delivery of training and corporate work days on site and associated community sites and to work with other Trust staff and volunteers to promote the Trust s work; 8) To be the key point of contact for the Trust at Centre for Wildlife Gardening, to strengthen existing partnerships and develop new partnerships with the LB Southwark, wildlife groups, community groups and businesses, and to represent the interests of the Trust at times. 9) To maximise PR and publicity for Centre for Wildlife Gardening and the Trust in liaison with the Communications Team, and relevant partners. 10) To represent the Trust at relevant meetings and partnerships, and to ensure that the Trust gets maximum benefit from these. Site and premises: General: 1) To manage Centre for Wildlife Gardening to maximise its value for biodiversity, to achieve Green Pennant status, and for the benefit of the public in accordance with the aims of the Trust (following relevant Trust policies and guidelines including the Centre for Wildlife Gardening management plan), and to coordinate the review of site specific plans as appropriate. 2) To ensure the buildings on site and tool store are maintained so that they are fit for purpose, that legislative requirements are adhered to and ensuring that sufficient funds are in place to enable this. 3) To ensure that Centre for Wildlife Gardening is open and accessible at all practicable times, including opening every weekend; this will require the post-holder to work at two weekend days per month and building the volunteer base to increase current opening. 4) To ensure that a schedule of wildlife monitoring is undertaken at Centre for Wildlife Gardening and that the information produced is regularly provided to Greenspace Information for Greater London (GIGL). 1) To ensure that all Trust Policy is adhered to by all staff and volunteers including Conservation Policies and Position statements, Health & Safety Policy, Lone Working Policy, Dignity at Work Policy, Volunteer Policy, Equal Opportunities Policy, and Safeguarding Children and Adults Policies. To ensure best practice in working with all service users. 2) To ensure that Centre for Wildlife Gardening is maintained in a safe condition, ensuring the safety of staff, volunteers and visitors, and report incidences of vandalism and other site misuse to the Reserves Manager and relevant authorities and when appropriate the Trusts Health & Safety Committee. 3 3) To report on a regular basis to the Health & Safety Committee, and other committees as required. 4) To undertake administrative and budgetary functions to ensure a successful business model is maintained. 5) With the support of other Trust staff, to raise funds for the Trusts work from a variety of sources (including identification of potential funding sources). Other areas of responsibility: a) Promotion of the Trust: To work at all times to further the aims of the Trust including promotion of Trust membership. To encourage donations and to assist in and promote related events and campaigns where appropriate. b) Health and Safety: All staff are legally responsible for ensuring Health and Safety considerations are taken into account in all working situations. Staff are encouraged to make reports or suggestions on any matters of concern. c) Equal opportunities: To work at all times within the Trust s Equal Opportunities Policy and to promote equal opportunities wherever possible especially with regard to volunteer and membership recruitment. Terms and Conditions Salary: Hours of work: Holidays: Tenure: Grade 5 Manager 27-29,000 per annum pro-rata Three days per week 9.30 am pm, including one hour for lunch. The post-holder will be expected to work a minimum of two weekend days per month (with corresponding days off in the week). In addition, some evening and weekend work will be necessary for which time off in lieu will be given. 25 days per annum plus statutory holidays pro rata Permanent An enhanced CRB check is required for this role. Those listed as 'Essential' are those that the candidates must have. Candidates who fail to meet these criteria will not be short-listed. 'Desirable' skills and experience are those that it would be advantageous to have, although it is not essential. Essential Experience of working in the nature conservation sector, including experience of wildlife gardening and food growing and knowledge of conservation land management Experience and understanding of involving people in conservation via volunteering; community engagement and outdoor learning Experience of staffing a visitor centre, nature reserve or similar (including maintenance) Demonstrable experience of managing staff, freelancers and volunteers Experience of developing projects, fundraising and income generation from a variety of sources Significant and demonstrable experience of project management (ideally HLF-funded projects) Significant and demonstrable experience of monitoring, evaluation and reporting including making financial claims Demonstrable experience of managing resources within budget Proven ability to relate to and work with people from a broad cross-section of the community, ideally including experience of community involvement/development work in an urban context Knowledge of working practices of risk assessment and COSHH assessment in the conservation sector Experience of implementing quality standards e.g. Learning outside the Classroom Quality Badge or Green Pennant Award Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) and competent user of Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint Good organisational, time management, team-working and facilitation skills Commitment to and experience of compliance and best practice in equal opportunities, health and safety and safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. Desirable Knowledge of urban nature conservation issues and policy and the management of urban conservation sites Degree in a relevant subject Experience of producing interpretation materials, reports and publicity materials Holding an up-to-date First Aid certificate Demonstrable knowledge of wildlife gardening and food growing policy and practice A knowledge of London, its people and its wildlife areas Demonstrable media skills, including experience of press, publicity and use of social media.
