1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Responsible to: Freelance Mondrian Creative Programmer Mondrian Project Team Champion (Head of Learning) Purpose of Job/Key objectives Turner Contemporary is planning an ambitious season of exhibitions for summer 2014 around the theme of colour. This includes a blockbuster Mondrian and Colour exhibition, as well as works by JMW Turner and new commissions by Spencer Finch and Edmund De Waal. In order to maximize visitor engagement and numbers, we require a temporary, part time freelance Mondrian Creative Events Programmer to devise, plan and deliver an exciting programme of cross art form public events in the gallery and off site, linked to Turner Contemporary s summer 2014 exhibitions aimed at engaging diverse audiences. Working as part of the programming team and reporting to the Head of Learning, the Mondrian Creative Events Programmer will also contribute ideas and research to deliver the Public Programme of talks and events, lectures, symposia, live art and music performances. The Mondrian Creative Events Programmer will work in partnership with a wide range of external partners to develop and deliver an ambitious and sustainable programme that is a model of excellence regionally, nationally and internationally and which supports Turner Contemporary s mission and values. Principal Duties/Tasks and responsibilities To conceive and deliver a programme of imaginative, inspiring and accessible cross art form public events aimed at new and diverse audiences linked to the summer 2014 exhibitions programme. To conceive and deliver a Public Programme of talks and events, lectures and symposia, live art and music performances to facilitate deeper engagement with the Mondrian and Spencer Finch exhibitions. To collaborate with a range of external partners including visual arts venues, dance, theatre and music organizations, higher education providers and stakeholders to deliver the programme. To work directly with audiences to generate programme content. With the support of the Finance Manager, to set and monitor income and expenditure budgets, delivering all Public Programme events within budget and to agreed targets and timescales. To maximise audience participation in the Public Programme and work with the Head of Communications to ensure that all events are effectively marketed, documented

2 and communicated both internally and externally. To take responsibility for promoting events to specific relevant contacts. To engage the artistic community of Margate and East Kent through artist professional development, consultation and contributions to the Public Programme where appropriate. To maximise the potential of Turner Contemporary's links with Further and Higher Education institutions and to ensure that ideas, research and thinking from these sectors are fed into the wider programme and benefit a range of visitors. To generate income equivalent to 35% of the (total) expenditure of the Public Programme. To ensure that all artists, speakers and other participants in the summer 2014 programme are properly contracted for their services. Develop relationships with museums, galleries and collectors in the UK and abroad. Knowledge of Health and Safety policies and an understanding of equal opportunities. A certain level of flexibility regarding availability outside normal working hours is required to attend events and private views. 3 Person Specification Specification Essential Desirable Qualifications: Degree or post graduate qualification in Art History or related field Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, in particular the ability to communicate clearly and confidently with both specialists and diverse audiences with differing expertise Excellent event organising skills including audio visual competence Excellent administrative skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail Foreign language Work Experience: Experience of organising events in a cultural organization (eg theatre, concert hall, gallery) Experience of programming in the public realm Project management experience Experience of successful funding applications to charities, trusts and foundations and research councils. Confident user of computers and audio visual equipment Behaviours/characteristics: A curious and enquiring mind A broad understanding of Modernism and 20 th century art, design and architecture Good working knowledge of at least one other creative discipline Creative and strategic thinker A natural collaborator with the ability to work with and inspire a wide range of people from practitioners, external partners, stakeholders and audiences

5 Turner Contemporary Turner Contemporary is a visual arts organisation, founded in 2001, to contextualise, celebrate, and build on JMW Turner s association with Margate. Turner Contemporary is a gallery and visitor attraction of national and international importance and a key part of Kent s cultural infrastructure. We act as a catalyst for the regeneration of Margate, aiming to reinvigorate civic pride and inspire people to broaden their horizons and achieve their full potential. We are based in a world-class gallery, designed by award winning architect, Sir David Chipperfield and are the largest purpose built gallery in the South East of England outside of London. Since the gallery opened in April 2011, Turner Contemporary has gone from strength to strength. We have welcomed thousands of visitors, achieved a huge national and international profile and put Margate firmly back on the map. Turner Contemporary is a charity governed by a Board of Trustees Chaired by John Kampfner. Our mission statement (below) is used to help determine the various activities which we undertake as well as defining our values as an organisation. By 2015 we will establish Turner Contemporary as one of the foremost galleries in the UK: known and respected locally, nationally and internationally for the breadth and ambition of the art and learning opportunities we present; for our innovative approach across all elements of our business and for the way in which we make art relevant, inspiring and engaging to all whom we have contact with; and, as a result of this, for being a catalyst for the regeneration of Margate. Turner Contemporary receives some revenue funding from Arts Council England and Kent County Council in addition to our fundraising and earned income. All staff are encouraged to embrace a culture of entrepreneurial thinking and to support the development team in delivering on our targets. We are also creating an Endowment Fund through the Catalyst Endowment programme to support our future ambitions. The gallery programmes three exhibition seasons per annum in the upstairs, environmentally controlled gallery spaces. The Sunley Gallery, on the ground floor, is used for commissions and large-scale existing works and the Clore Learning Studio also has a programme of work. In addition, we have a vibrant and active Learning and Public Programme in which all staff are able to participate. All staff are encouraged to take part in Project Teams which are established to deliver the exhibitions. Staff work in open plan offices with views out to sea.
