You will undertake training in a professional and fully operational recording studio and theatre and you will also have an opportunity to undertake work experience with other professional organisations in live theatre, live sound production, recording studios and event management. 2 What employment opportunities will I have? You will be ready for employment as a lighting or sound technician, or in stage management, in a range of live events, such as mainstream and alternative theatre, opera, musicals, dance exhibitions, concerts, functions and corporate and public events. Further career options include production and technical management. Such work can be of a freelance or contract nature. Skilled workers are currently in high demand in this industry sector and demand is growing. What does this course involve? The Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services is designed for those who wish to work in or are already working in the very exciting and rewarding entertainment industry. The course specialises in the areas of live sound, recording studio techniques, lighting design, staging and event management. The diploma provides training in planning for rehearsals, events and shows and provides you with the leadership and technical skills required of a manager in live production. This is a comprehensive training opportunity for future coordinators of production operations and multiskilled technicians. Applicants are expected to have some existing technical skills and to be ready to work at a Diploma level. The course is delivered using a blended model including theory classes, group activities, homework tasks, practical workshops and industry experience components. Course entry requirements 1. A written letter of Expression of Interest providing details of your interest in completing this course and covering your areas of specialization. Please ring ITeC and speak to our Entertainment Trainer for further information and to organise an interview. 2. You will also be required to have completed CUSOHS301A Follow occupational health and safety procedures or can demonstrate. (Delivery of this Unit of Competency will meet the current requirements under WHS ACT 2012). NOTE: To enable students to meet the above requirement CUSOHS301A will be delivered prior to course commencement for any students who have not already completed this unit or are unable to demonstrate equivalence. Course Outline (Entertainment Studies Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services) Location: Illawarra ITeC, Coniston Duration: 40 weeks over 4 terms February 2015 to December 2015 Delivery: On site classroom based with a self learning research and project component Delivery breakdown: 3 days per week classroom (face to face) theory/written and practical project work 2 days per week course assigned flexible research, assessment and project work to be undertaken by student. A Statement of Attainment will be issued for units deemed competent if a full qualification is not achieved. Candidates may also apply for RPL or Credit Transfer. A range of legislation, rules, regulations and codes of practice may apply to this unit at the time of endorsement, depending on job roles and jurisdictions. This unit applies to individuals working as a chief executive or manager in a small organisation (where it would be part of their broad role) or as a member of a compliance management team within a larger organisation. These individuals require a sound theoretical knowledge of compliance and well established skills in identifying and interpreting compliance requirements relevant to the operations and sphere of business of the organisation and/or industry sector concerned. 4 The unit also applies to internal or external consultants as part of a broader advisory role to the chief executive or management team of a large or small organisation on compliance management policies and systems. As the activities are focused primarily on identifying and interpreting specific legislative requirements, codes of practice, and internal standards and procedures as they relate to a particular organisation. Researching compliance issues is a higher order competence aimed at carrying out research into a wider range of compliance-related issues, such as the costs of compliance, the potential impact of compliance on an organisation or industry, and the risks and consequences of non-compliance. BSBWOR502B Ensure team effectiveness This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to facilitate all aspects of teamwork within the organisation. It involves taking a leadership role in the development of team plans, leading and facilitating teamwork and actively engaging with the management of the organisation. This unit applies to managers and addresses the need for managers to facilitate work teams and to build a positive culture within work teams. The unit takes a systematic and planned approach to developing teams. It includes the soft skills as well as more structured approaches to the management of teams. At this level, work will normally be carried out within complex and diverse methods and procedures which require the exercise of considerable discretion and judgment, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies. CPCCOHS1001A Work safely in the construction industry This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to undertake Work Health and Safety (WHS) induction training within the construction industry. It requires the ability to demonstrate personal awareness of WHS legislative requirements, and the basic principles of risk management and prevention of injury and illness in the construction industry. This unit of competency supports the attainment of the basic WHS knowledge required prior to undertaking designated work tasks within any of the sectors within the construction industry. The unit relates directly to the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (ASCC 2007). NOTE: CPCCOHS1001A is delivered to meet the current requirements under WHS ACT Page 4 of 8
5 CUAPPM504 Manage bump in and bump out of shows This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage the movement, transportation, installation and removal of equipment and physical elements for productions in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries. Individuals who apply these skills are expected to display a high level of initiative, judgment and responsibility as they supervise the bump in and bump out of production areas, such as lighting, sound, staging, sets, props, scenic art or vision systems. CUVIND501B Maintain and apply creative arts industry knowledge This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to maintain industry knowledge and manage own professional practice within the creative arts industry. This unit addresses the research, analysis, application and maintenance of information relevant to work roles within the creative arts industry. It involves industry structures and operations, employment obligations and opportunities, industry trends and emerging technologies, and industry laws and regulations. The unit also addresses effective monitoring and participation in industry networks. BSBWHS501A Ensure a safe workplace This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to establish, maintain and evaluate the organisation s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area according to WHS legislative requirements. This unit applies to managers working in a range of contexts. It takes a systems approach and addresses compliance with relevant legislative requirements. CUSSOU502A Produce sound recordings This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to produce a musical recording. Music producers and sound engineers apply the skills and knowledge described in this unit. They are responsible for working collaboratively and creatively with artists and performers to produce musical recordings which can be distributed through record companies and in a range of media, such as television, film, video and the internet. Even though their particular focus is on performers and their skills to produce a creative work, they are responsible also for the quality and balance of the final recording. In addition, they need a range of musical, technical, personal, business and management skills. Page 5 of 8
6 CUSSOU504A Create a final sound balance This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to create a final sound balance for a production. Thorough understanding of a wide range of sound equipment and techniques for mixing and recording sound is required, along with the ability to supervise others, including engineers, sound mixers, sound editors and other studio technicians. The ability to solve problems that arise in the context of creating a final sound balance is essential. Sound producers apply the skills and knowledge described in this unit. They work in live theatre, film, television and radio and are responsible for collaborating with other creative and technical personnel to create a final sound balance. Productions may be recorded or produced live. CUASOU401 Mix live audio This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to mix audio for live shows in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries. Individuals who apply these skills work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for the front of house mix, which involves creating quality sound for audiences. They may also be responsible for supervising others. CUALGT501 Realise lighting designs This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to implement lighting designs and supervise lighting operations for productions in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries. Individuals who apply these skills are expected to display a high level of initiative, judgment and responsibility as they supervise lighting operations through the three phases of pre-production, production and post-production. NOTE: In some States and Territories of Australia, a restricted electrical licence is required to repair and maintain production equipment. Restricted electrical licences allow a person to carry out electrical work incidental to a trade. Incidental work may include fault-finding on equipment or changing like for like equipment by disconnecting and reconnecting the fixed wiring. It does not include any other changes to the fixed wiring. CUALGT502 Manage installation of lighting systems This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage the installation and set-up of equipment and systems required to implement lighting designs for productions in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries. Individuals who apply these skills are expected to display a high level of initiative, judgment and responsibility as they plan, organise and manage resources needed to install lighting systems in venues. CUFLGT402A Set up, record and operate lighting cues and effects This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to set up a lighting control system, and to use the more complex functions of a console. Experienced lighting technicians or operators in the screen, media and entertainment industries apply the skills and knowledge outlined in this unit. At this level, they are expected to be reasonably creative and innovative in their implementation of lighting schemes across a diverse range of productions. They must be able to exploit the full capabilities of contemporary lighting systems in ways that are consistent with the aesthetics envisaged for productions. Attention to detail in recording and reproducing lighting cues is also required. Even though people at this level work autonomously, they are members of a production team and need to work collaboratively with lighting designers and directors to achieve creative outcomes. They are often responsible for supervising junior lighting technicians. CUAPPM502 Realise productions This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan and manage pre-production and production operations in specialist areas, such as lighting, audio, vision systems, stage management, costume, sets, props, scenic art and staging. Individuals who apply these skills are expected to display a high level of initiative and judgment as they take responsibility for managing the realisation of production concepts in their area of production expertise. CUASMT501 Stage manage productions and events This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to coordinate production and technical services for productions and events produced by external companies or community organisations in the entertainment and events industries. Individuals who apply these skills are expected to display initiative, judgment and responsibility as they use high level communication and coordination skills to ensure that productions and events run smoothly. 8 CUAVSS401 Operate complex vision systems This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare and operate complex vision systems with multiple vision sources and display devices that require the use of media servers and control networks. Individuals who apply these skills work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that vision systems for shows, presentations or installations deliver the desired effect.
