Recording studios are also experiencing increased activity with the growth of B.C.'s music industry. The audio visual recording sector is a small and young occupation group. Sound technicians yearly income depends on skill, experience, and the number of hours they work during the year. The average annual salary for Audio & Video Recording Technicians in BC is between $44,000 to $53,000 Television stations usually pay higher salaries than radio stations; commercial broadcasting usually pays more than educational broadcasting; and stations in large markets pay more than those in small markets. Hourly wages for sound technicians working in film tends to be the highest. Technicians who are employed on a full-time or permanent part-time basis may also receive benefits such as paid vacation and sick days, and extended health coverage. Those who are employed by elementary, middle, and high schools work weekdays, during school hours. However, the schedules of other AV techs are often irregular, and can include evening and weekend work. Overtime may also be required for some events. For sound technicians, hours vary greatly in this field. Technicians working in film are generally on short-term contracts, but spending long days on a set.
