ORGANISATION CHART: Reports to the Deputy Head of Department, Modern Languages. 6. JOB PURPOSE: To contribute to the design and delivery of programmes in Spanish Language and Spanish-speaking cultures globally at undergraduate and postgraduate level. To contribute to the Department s Area Studies research profile. To provide a supportive learning environment for students to develop graduate level and subject specific skills. To develop and implement teaching and learning initiatives. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Department of Modern Languages is one of four Departments in the Faculty of Humanities. The Department incorporates four language sections. It is delivering seven taught programmes in Modern Languages and their related cultures: Single Honours French; Combined Honours French; Combined Honours German; Single Honours Spanish; Combined Honours Spanish, Combined Honours Chinese and Single Honours in three modern languages. It also offers an MA in European Languages and Cultures and an MRes in addition to the established research routes of MPhil and PhD. The Department has been rapidly developing its research activity, establishing a coherent research platform with an international profile in language-based area studies. The field is transdisciplinary (film, politics, literature, visual cultures, performance cultures and history) and transcontinental (Asia, Africa, Europe and Americas). The Department is currently building on its success in Area Studies in Research Excellence Framework The Department launched a languages services project in September 2012 and is now offering evening leisure language courses in Japanese, Chinese, Russian, German, Polish, Arabic, Spanish, French, Italian and Spanish. In January 2013 it introduced Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) onto the evening programme and in March 2013 started delivering tailor-made business language courses for local business and industry. In January 2013 the Department took in its first cohort of students to the newly opened University of Cambridge centre for teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cambridge ESOL centre). WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communicating Effectively To facilitate students learning through lectures, tutorials and seminars at undergraduate level, contributing to post graduate and masters levels as required. To produce high quality teaching and learning material to support and develop student learning at undergraduate level and at postgraduate level, as required. To write and publish research papers on occasion. To contribute to the writing of course validation documents as required. 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively To act as module leader as required. To collaborate with academic colleagues on course development and curriculum changes. Exercise academic leadership, coordinating the efforts of colleagues to deliver module and programme objectives. To work collaboratively in the provision of Spanish/Hispano-American Studies, Departmental and extra-departmental business, from informal liaison with colleagues through to representing the Department at formal meetings and fulfilling Departmental administrative responsibilities as required. To understand the key targets under discussion/development and to contribute actively to the achievement of these targets. 8.3 Liaison and Networking To build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration. To be an active member of relevant departmental committees. To liaise regularly with colleagues in the Faculty, but will also be expected to liaise with the Head of Department, the Deputy Head, and with colleagues in other language sections and in other Departments as appropriate. 8.4 Delivering a High Quality Standard of Service To enhance the quality of taught and research programmes at under-graduate and/or postgraduate levels. To seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery by obtaining and analysing peer observation feedback, student feedback, and external examiner feedback to maintain high quality learning and teaching. 8.5 Effective Decision Making In the context of the role-holder s teaching duties, to make independent decisions on the content of individual learning activities and marking for student assessment purposes, and to provide advice to colleagues on such matters. To sit on student selection panels as required. To make collaborative decisions with programme teams on the content of taught and research programmes at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. To provide advice on issues to other members of the department to influence operational decisions within the immediate work area. To make an active contribution to Departmental strategy and policy over the range of the Department s activities.

To conduct seminars and tutorials, introducing new methods of delivery where required. To assess students overall performance, through setting/ marking programme work, practical sessions, supervisions, fieldwork and examinations, providing appropriate feedback to students. To challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking. To supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them with learning problems.

5 PERSON SPECIFICATION Job Title: Lecturer in Spanish/Hispano-American Studies PERSON SPECIFICATION Department: Modern Languages Criteria / Desirable Method of identification Qualifications: Good first degree in relevant subject (2:1 or First). Masters level qualification Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g.hea) PhD or willingness to achieve this within an agreed timescale Proven Experience: Must have suitable expertise to deliver lectures in Spanish/Hispano-American Studies. Previous teaching experience in higher education and participation in the range of academic administration associated with the design, validation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes Proven and sustained track record of contribution to the development of policy and practice in teaching and learning support. Demonstration of an advanced level of subject knowledge and of being an externally regarded teacher or scholar. An ability to keep abreast of, and lead developments in teaching and scholarship specific to Spanish/Hispano- American Studies, demonstrated through e.g. attendance at conferences, external contacts and publication of research.

7 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGAUGES LECTURER IN SPANISH/HISPANO-AMERICAN STUDIES FIXED TERM CONTRACT 4 January July 2017 SALARY SCALE TSR 3, points 31 34, 32,277-35,256 per annum. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 35 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years). Two extra statutory days during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION The successful candidate will be required to complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire and may also be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualification as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided.
