3 About the courses Every year Islington Council offer many free adult and family learning courses across our Adult and Community Learning (ACL) Centres in Islington. We have now joined up with City and Islington College to offer an even greater selection of courses, providing better opportunities for you to develop your skills, gain confidence, get a job or prepare for further education. Courses delivered at ACL learning centres remain free, but there are now additional free and low cost courses offered by the College. Who are the courses for? Our ACL courses are free for Islington residents or parents with children in Islington schools. You must be 19 or over, unemployed, or low-waged and receiving benefits to qualify. College courses are open to everyone. Many are free for those in receipt of Job Seeker s Allowance or unemployed on benefits and where fees apply you may be eligible for financial support. See page 54 for more information. How to sign up Come along to one of the open enrolment days at the beginning of term. They are a great opportunity to enrol or speak to our experienced and friendly staff about which course is right for you. ACL enrolment days are on Tuesday 11, Wednesday 12 and Thursday of September from 9.30am to 4pm at: Hargrave Park Learning Centre 3 Corners Learning Centre Arsenal Red Zone Learning Centre First Steps Learning Centre City and Islington College enrolment days run from Tuesday 28 August to Friday 7 September. To enrol onto a course you will need to go the Centre where your chosen course is run. For full details of enrolment s, times and venues, see page 53. 3

4 Information, advice, guidance and progression As part of your course you will receive ongoing support to help you achieve your learning goals, we will also help you to explore opportunities for further training and education or how to move into paid or voluntary work. Parents of 0-4 year olds also have access to the Islington Working for Parents team who can work with you to help you secure employment either now or in the near future. Childcare Some courses offer childcare services, this depends on the venue and the course. Contact the venue for more details, or refer to the course or college information section in this guide. Using this guide This guide provides details of both ACL centre courses and college courses. It is split down in sections to help you find exactly what you are looking for. Highlights include: learning English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) everyday English and maths GCSE English and maths computer skills supporting children s learning skills for employment vocational courses in business and retail, hair and beauty, child care, health care and counselling supported learning for students with learning difficulties and disabilities and much more! Each section provides course details, including a description, s and 4

5 times, location and any additional joining instructions. The fee column indicates the charge for certain college courses and a full list of venues and further information on college courses are also available later on in this guide pages If you miss the enrolment days you can contact the venue directly so they can advise on course availability. It is best to sign up as early as possible to ensure you get a place, but enrolment on some courses continues throughout the term. The knowledge, skills and problem-solving approaches contained within each qualification provide tools that can be utilised in work, life and further learning. 27 Maths courses and assessments Do you want to brush up on your maths skills, feel more confident managing your money or helping your children, as well as helping your employment prospects? We offer a range of different level courses which allow you to develop your maths skills, work with money, calculate measurements, create graphs and more. s range from complete beginners to 2 (GCSE level). As well as GCSE courses for adults the College provides a course for year olds who have recently achieved a good grade D and there is also a Maths GCSE re-sit evening course that runs from September until January for students who have recently achieved a grade D. To join any of our courses you must come along to a free assessment session first where friendly tutors will check your level and advise which course is right for you. 28 English/literacy courses and assessments Did you leave school without achieving your full potential? Do you want to return to education? If you want to improve your Basic Skills in English and develop your employment prospects, we have a range of courses to help you. Develop your literacy (practical English) reading, speaking, listening and writing skills from complete beginners to 2 (GCSE level). We offer a range of courses to suit your needs: English/literacy courses: that help you to improve your reading, spelling and writing Vocational courses: to prepare you for work and support your English, including an introduction to social care, child care and office administration Return to study: improve your basic skills before studying for a higher qualification Pre-access courses: to help you prepare for higher education if you don t already have the qualifications you need. 30 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses and assessments ESOL courses are for people whose first language is not English and are designed for students living permanently in the UK. Courses range from complete beginners to 2 (GCSE level). All courses teach the four skills listening, speaking, reading and writing. Citizenship is also covered at entry level and many courses include employability. Most students will take an exam (Trinity or Cambridge ESOL, Functional Skills), but the course teacher will advise you on this. There are also Contextualised ESOL courses that develop your English language skills for working in various occupational areas, for example in care, in the office or in schools. You must have a free assessment before you can enrol on an ESOL course. Our friendly tutors will check your level and advise which course is right for you. For ACL courses attend Arsenal, Hargrave, 3Corners or Parent House and for college courses attend CLL or CBAT to be assessed. You will need to bring your passport to make an appointment at CLL/CBAT for one of the college assessments.
