7 Support for Life In addition to learning support, we offer support for life outside the classroom. Our advisers and counsellors provide unbiased support on practical issues such as studying while on benefits, accommodation and immigration issues. We can also advise on financial support, bursaries, loans and scholarships. The College is proud of the richness in diversity of our students. We believe in equality and fairness for all our students and are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all who learn here. The College also has two nurseries, which provide limited places for students children aged 1 5. If you need information and guidance on careers and your next step, there s support for you too, including visits to universities, meeting employers at jobs fairs and developing your employability skills. Canteens and Organic Café Each of our centres has an on site canteen, which offers great value for money, including hot meals from 3! The canteens are great social spaces as well, where you can relax with friends between classes. Get involved Student Voice We are committed to listening to and acting on the views of our students. 9 Access to Higher education If you want to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need to apply, Access to Higher Education (HE) is for you. Access to HE courses are widely accepted by universities as the adult equivalent of A Levels and develop the study skills you need, especially if you haven t been in a classroom for some time. This online course is perfect if you re working and want to study in your spare time. You will access coursework remotely and attend college on Saturdays. On the course I learnt about social enterprise, not-for-profit business and how to become an entrepreneur. I decided that I wanted to start a business not just to make money, but to help people. I had not heard of access courses before, but they are an amazing and intensive route to university for people like me who want a career change. Matthias went on to study Business at City University. Providing up-to-date equipment and plenty of storage in our two practical workshops, you can study techniques ranging from hand building and throwing (working with a potter s wheel) to decorating, glazing and raku (Japanese method). Yet with the help of her tutors, Nicki has been able to learn new techniques and produce some beautiful pieces of work. I have enjoyed the course so far as we are in for a full day on Monday so you are able to take your time, concentrate and really focus on your work rather than having to rush. My tutors are really good. If you ve got problems or are struggling with something they always help you deal with it. My teachers were always very supportive and really helped me get into a rewarding career. 23 TRACEY CALLAGHAN At a very low point in her life, while trying to overcome a serious assault, Tracy could no longer carry on her job due to her injuries. She came to the College to work out her options. I was so nervous as I m dyslexic, did not have any GCSEs, and had been out of education for a long time but the careers team were brilliant. Bit by bit I built up my skills and experience from studying counselling theory to therapeutic and psychotherapeutic diplomas. I now own my own counselling service and manage volunteers supporting substance misusers. I am a creative clinical supervisor and council and use hypnotherapy with clients across the world on Skype. 28 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) ESOL courses are for people whose first language is not English and are designed for students living permanently in the UK. Students practise speaking, listening, reading and writing English for personal, academic and employment purposes in a college with an excellent reputation and student support. Where do these courses take place? The Centre for Lifelong Learning (Finsbury Park) and the Centre for Business, Arts and Technology (Camden Road). When? FREE for learners: On Job Seeker s Allowance/ unemployed or in receipt of benefits and looking to find work in the future. As part of a Functional Skills course. 29 About our ESOL Courses: Our ESOL Courses are from Entry Level 1 (Beginners) to Level 2 (about GCSE level) and all teach the four skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Most students will take an exam (ESOL or Functional Skills English), and your teacher will advise you on this. We also have classes that are for ESOL students who need extra help with their reading and writing. Some courses also include studying towards a maths qualification as well as ESOL. Many classes also include time in an IT room. Courses include citizenship themes and develop employability and work skills, as well as offering one to one tutorial support. Contextualised ESOL Courses (Mainly at Entry Level 3 and Level 1). These develop your English language skills for working in various occupational areas, for example in care or in schools. 37 Apprenticeships THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS The College offers Apprenticeships in: Engineering Environmental Technologies Laboratory and Science Technician Business and Administration Veterinary Nursing Optical Retailing Customer Service Hairdressing Children s and Young People s Workforce Supply Chain Management Pharmacy Services Information for Apprenticeship applicants Get paid and trained at the same time. An apprentice will be paid the current apprenticeship national minimum wage per hour in their first year. Work alongside other members of staff. Be trained by your employer (on the job) and at College (off the job). Gain a nationally-recognised qualification. Apprenticeships cover three different levels: Level 2 Intermediate (equivalent to five good GCSEs), Level 3 Advanced (equivalent to two A Levels) or Level 4/ 5/ 6 Higher Level Apprenticeships which may include HNC/ HND or other professional qualifications. We also offer supported training for year old candidates in London Boroughs to help them get into an apprenticeship or sustained employment: General employability skills including CV preparation and interview skills. Information for Employers An apprentice is a valuable asset to any company. 80% agree that their workplace has benefited from an apprentice. College staff work alongside businesses to ensure personal targets are agreed and monitored throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship. 38 FEES EXPLAINED At City and Islington College, we believe that nothing should stand in the way of you achieving your ambition. The government offers funding for adult courses based on your age, the course you choose and your employment status. The criteria for funding can be quite complicated but we re here to help and will be able to assess your eligibility at enrolment. In this guide you will notice varying prices for each course where concessions are available labelled as co-funded and unfunded (see Fig. 1). These relate to the fee that UK/EU students will need to pay depending on whether they are eligible to receive funding or not. If you are eligible for full funding your course may be free. Types of funding Fully-funded: Tuition, exam fees and essential materials and resources are funded by the government. Co-funded: Students are required to pay a contribution towards the cost of their learning, with tuition, exam fees and materials partially funded by the government. Unfunded: If students do not meet the criteria for funding they are required to pay the full fee however payment plans and Advanced Learning Loans are available on some courses (see 24+ Advanced Learning Loans on the opposite page).
