1 Sport If you re fanatical about all things Sport, then we have the course for you. Careers in Sport are hugely varied, exciting and could see you working anywhere in the world. With a range of courses of study for every level, top facilities and professional coaching, TyneMet is the best place to kick-off your career in the sports industry. The Sport department was recognised in 2012 for its best practice for Sports Leaders. TyneMet was presented with Leadership Academy status in recognition of the College s work with local school and community groups. I have really enjoyed my time at TyneMet College and have achieved Distinction grades in every unit. The way that lessons and coursework are structured has helped me to achieve these grades. So far I have had the opportunity to volunteer with the Newcastle United Foundation, where I refereed and coached teams, and also activities with disabled footballers, which was really interesting and gave me an insight to the different needs of individuals in sport. I am really looking forward to coming back for my second year at TyneMet College. 2 A Strong Learning Culture Outcomes for learners are good. Success rates are above the national average on most courses. On the national diploma in sport and exercise, pass rates are very high. Students enjoy their courses and many achieve well. A very strong learning culture within the department inspires learners and promotes ambition, respect and team working. Higher Education or Employment The development of learners knowledge and skills is good. Many students gain high grades that support their aspirations to progress to further or higher education. All students acquire a good level of knowledge about fitness and healthy lifestyles. More than just a Course Most learners undertake a period of voluntary work, within the local community, whilst developing their sports coaching skills. Their work with schools and a range of other organisations helps them to develop good personal and employability skills, as well as making a contribution to the community. Exciting & Imaginative Lessons Teaching and learning are good. Teachers plan lessons well, use an appropriate range of learning activities to keep students engaged and enthused and strongly link theory and practical work. Information and learning technology is used imaginatively in most lessons. Students are encouraged to evaluate their own learning. How will I Succeed? practices are good. Teachers use the outcome of initial assessment well when setting individual learning goals. tasks are clearly planned and written. Feedback is prompt, constructive and developmental, leaving students very clear about what they have to do to improve and achieve high grades. How will I be Supported? on Sport at TyneMet Students receive good support from teachers and learning support assistants that enables them to achieve and develop both personally and academically. Learners have clear, time-bound targets and regular tutorials which monitor their progress. 3 100% Pass Rate 100% Pass Rate Level 1 Diploma in Sport & Active Leisure Level 2 Diploma in Sport The course for you if... sport is your passion and you want a practical, work-related course designed to introduce you into the industry. You will study the sport and leisure industry and you will also have the opportunity to play sport and investigate the systems of the body. You will also gain and enhance key skills, including sporting ability and personal communication, which are vital in order to succeed in the industry. Inspirational educational visits from professional guest speakers will further develop your knowledge in this sector. Minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade D-F or above; or at least a pass at BTEC Entry or Certificate; or a suitable Foundation Level qualification or equivalent. An interview with a course tutor and a reference from a previous school or College are required. One year. is coursework based using a variety of methods including oral exams, practical demonstrations, presentations, reports, role plays and observations. You could progress to a Level 2 Sports qualification. Careers include: employment as a Fitness Instructor, Sports Coach or Leisure Assistant. The course for you if... you want to fulfil your dreams of a career in sport and would like to develop advanced skills in sport. This course suits those with a strong interest in sport and want to learn more about anatomy and physiology, planning sports events and activities, developing personal fitness and the effect of exercise on the body. In addition to gaining skills and enhancing sports knowledge, you will write diet plans, analyse the human body, carry out fitness testing and investigate the lifestyle of an athlete. You will get the opportunity to visit sport venues such as Whickham Thorns Outdoor Centre and Drugs in Sport workshop at the Centre for Life in Newcastle. Minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above (with at least one at Grade C or above) or a successful pass at Level 1 Sport and 1 GCSE at Grade D or above. You can progress from a relevant Level 1 qualification. An interview with a course tutor and a reference from a personal tutor are required. Throughout the two-year course, you ll cover a wide range of subjects that will broaden your scientific understanding about sport. You will study topics including Anatomy, Psychology, Sports Coaching, Fitness Testing, Nutrition, Biomechanics and Sports Injuries. As well as classroom-based learning, you will also visit universities, sports centres and venues that will add an all-important practical element to your studies. Maths, English plus Science at Grade B or Level 2 Sport at distinction level. Minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above including One Year. During this course you will gain a solid grounding in how to achieve excellence in performance. You will examine the role of the professional sportsperson as well as key concepts within sports coaching; including nutrition and sports psychology. 7 Level 3 Football Excellence Programme (delivered in partnership with Complete Football, Gosforth Park) The course for you if... you want a career within the Football or Sport industry and have a passion for and strong ability in football. Not only will you complete a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence), but you will also have the opportunity to train and learn within a professional football environment. The course is based at the outstanding Complete Football Training Centre in Gosforth Park providing you with the opportunity to develop as a player, and learn and work with the experienced workforce at Complete Football to develop industry specific skills and part-time employment opportunities. You will also examine the ethics and values in Sport, the role of the professional sportsperson, sports psychology and the principles of coaching. You will have the option to complete a Level 1 Football Coaching Award, First Aid and Basic Referee s Award. You will also complete a Level 2 Award in Sport Leadership and an NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing. at Level 2. An interview with a course tutor is required and you need to be successful at TyneMet s excellence programme trials. You will be assessed through your coursework, which includes projects, group presentations, podcasts and practical work. 8 Level 3 Basketball Excellence Programme (delivered in partnership with Newcastle Eagles & England Basketball) The course for you if... you want to pursue a career within the Basketball or Sports industry with the opportunity to train and learn within a professional basketball environment. Also, if you are looking to develop your basketball game, your employability and your knowledge of the world of sport, this is the course for you. Based at the Coast Road Campus, but with significant links to the Newcastle Eagles, this course allows you to gain practical knowledge in all aspects of the Sport including: pre and post-game nutrition; match psychology; and high level individually tailored training sessions. You will also get the chance to take part in competitions in the British Colleges & English Schools Premier League (by invite only) alongside volunteering opportunities at The Eagles Game Nights and Coach mentoring. You will be assessed through your coursework, which includes projects, group presentations and practical work. Sport.
