3 Welcome to Hounslow Adult and Community Education 2014/ I am very pleased to welcome you to the new Hounslow Adult and Community Education s guide to courses for 2014/2015. Our Prospectus is packed with a broad range of classes and courses which can help you to develop or improve your skills, find employment, improve your career prospectus, gain a qualification or simply enjoy learning something new for personal interest, wellbeing and pleasure. All our courses are taught by skilled and professional staff. We have an excellent reputation for quality with good success rates for our learners, and positive customer feedback. Many of you are looking for opportunities to learn new skills to help you get a job or improve your career. This is very important and we are continuing to offer a range of qualification courses to support you in this. Our vocational courses includes: English and Maths (essential skills for work); English for Speakers of other Language (ESOL); Health and Social Care, Early Years and childcare, Hair and Beauty and Business and ICT. We offer these courses from complete beginner level up to Level 2 and, new this year, in Level 3 Apprenticeships for people over 19. Remember if you are unemployed and in receipt of benefits then all these courses are completely free. In our Community Learning programme we offer a wide range of leisure and personal interest courses, from Drawing to Plumbing, Guitar to Webpage Design. Come along and try something new this year, develop new skills, meet new people and enjoy new experiences. For older learners, please see our growing Keeping Active programme, this year we have a range of day time courses such as Digital Photography; Tai Chi; Spanish; French; Using Skype and Twitter; and many more. We also provide family learning courses throughout the year, across the borough in schools, libraries and children s centres. These popular classes are interesting and fun and great way for parents, carers and children to learn together. 4 Are you unemployed and need support to help you get a job? Looking for a job can be a job in itself. Hounslow Adult and Community Education (HACE) are here to help make the whole process easier. We offer a variety of short courses to help you get back into work and support you preparing for interviews. We offer regular CV workshops along with the opportunity to have a one-to-one session with an employment advisor who can look at your existing skills and identify areas that you could further improve to give you that edge when applying for a job. Work clubs Work Clubs are designed to offer you employment support with advice and helpful hints on CV s and interviews, in a relaxed group session. They are a great way to get the support you need to get back into work. At our Work Clubs you will be able to look for jobs on the internet, learn how to use universal Job Match, complete application forms, and work on your CV. We can also refer you for a skills assessments and advise on training courses to help you get work. Look at the table below to find details of a Work Club near you. Enterprise club Calling all budding entrepreneurs If you think you have a great idea for your own business but not sure how to get going, come along to our Enterprise Club. At our Enterprise Club you will get expert advice on starting your own business, covering essential topics such as of marketing, business planning and finance. You will also have the opportunity to network with others who are working on setting up their own businesses. The Club runs at Hounslow in The Treaty Centre, located at High Street, Hounslow, TW1 1ES. Just drop in, or if you want more information phone

8 Skills training for employment Hounslow Adult and Community Education works We run a large number of courses in different occupational areas to help you get the skills and qualifications you need to get a job, or to move ahead in your career. All our skills training courses lead to a nationally approved qualification, and are free if you are unemployed and in receipt of a means tested benefit.* We have courses in Business and ICT, Hair and Beauty, Health and Social Care, Childcare and Early Years, as well as excellent courses in those essential skills for the workplace English (including ESOL), Maths and Employability. This is what we can offer to help you get back to work or to improve your career prospects: Business and ICT The world of business and information and communications technology is ever changing with constant demand for competent and qualified individuals. If you are interested in working or developing your skills within the fields of business administration, business finance, or in developing IT skills that will open opportunities for using technology in the world of work, then one of our courses will prove invaluable. Children s Care, Early Years and Teaching Assistants Working with children or young people is a profession for people who want to make a real difference. If you feel you have commitment, enthusiasm and lots of energy to develop new and existing skills working in these sectors, then this could be the career for you. There are opportunities for you to progress in your chosen field no matter what your starting point is; we offer progression routes from Entry Level to Level 2 and we are now offering the new Intro to Early Years Education and Care at Level 2. This new qualification is the benchmark for early years professionals. English and Maths English - whatever sort of job you want to do you will need a good level of English. You may have English as a second language and want to improve speaking, listening, reading and writing, or you may have English as your first language but need to improve your reading and writing (literacy) skills. Whatever your need we offer a range of courses in English from pre-entry to Level 2 and GCSE. Don t worry about what level you are now, when you come to see us we will assess your current level of English and be able to advise you on what is the best course for you. Maths - maths and numeracy skills are essential both in the workplace and at home. Employers are looking for people who are able to work confidently with numbers and place a high value on this skill. We offer a number of maths courses to help you improve your numeracy skills from entry level to Level 2 and GCSE. 8

9 Health and Social Care Working with vulnerable adults and the elderly in the care sector is a very rewarding and fulfilling career. There are lots of opportunities for employment and you will have the satisfaction of helping some of those in most need of care and support in our society. As with most of our vocational training there are progression routes from Entry Level to Level 2. We are now offering Advanced Health and Social Care Apprenticeships at Level 3. Hairdressing and Beauty The hair and beauty industries are rapidly growing and trained therapists and hairdressers have never been more in demand. If you are interested in helping people to improve their self-esteem and well-being, then becoming a therapist or hairdresser may be the career for you. There are many career opportunities in high street salons, department stores, hospitals, health spas, hotels, television, cruise ships and working abroad. There are opportunities for you to progress in your chosen field no matter what your starting point; you will get the chance to learn from tutors who have extensive experience in the industry and train in a realistic working environment with lots of opportunities to practise on colleagues and members of the general public. Skills for Life and Work - useful workskills and employability We run a number of courses and workshops in subjects that will give you the opportunity to learn useful skills for both personal and professional development. Courses include: First Aid, Manual Handling, Food Hygiene, Developing Confidence and Self-Esteem, Money Management (Made of Money), Employability courses, eg Getting into work, CV and Interview Techniques, Developing Confidence and Self-Esteem, British Sign Language and Lip Reading. See page 24 for more details. Vocational Courses for Adults with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities Do you want to work at your own pace? Are you looking to improve your existing skills or develop new skills? Why not come along and explore the different opportunities available to you. Our qualification courses will enable you to work towards Functional Skills in maths, English and ICT. These qualifications will help you to build your confidence and communication skills, which all help you towards independent living. This is a great opportunity for potential apprentices to develop a career in a rapidly growing sector. 26 How to enrol Choose your course Use the contents page to help you find the subject you are interested in. There is a brief overview of courses in this guide, and you can get the full Course Information Sheet from our website at or by telephoning our main enquiry line Enrol on a course You can enrol on a course using the following methods: * By phone: call and pay the full fee with your debit or credit card. You will be asked to sign a Learning Agreement at your first lesson. By post: complete an application form and send it to one of our main centres, enclosing a cheque made payable to London Borough of Hounslow. Application forms are available from our centres, or you can download a copy from our website at If you are claiming concessionary rate, enclose a copy of your benefit proof. In person: you can visit our main centre. You will find address and maps on p??. If you are claiming concessionary rate, bring along your most current benefit documentation for evidence. Please note your place on a course is only confirmed when you pay your fee and receive a receipt. Some courses are very popular and fill up quickly so please ensure you enrol as early as possible. 26

27 Course Fees All courses are subsidised through government funding for EU learners only. International learners will be classified as an overseas/international student if you have not been resident in the UK or European Union for three years preceding the start of your course or if you have any restrictions on your stay. A visa does not constitute ordinary residence. International students pay a higher fee because government funding does not cover the cost of your learning. If you are unsure of your status and for details of course fees, please check with our enrolment staff. Qualification course fees: Qualification course fees include examination and assessment fees where applicable. Unemployed adults in receipt of means tested benefit If you unemployed, looking for work, and are in receipt of a means tested benefit all the qualification courses in this Prospectus are free. You will need to sign a self-declaration form stating that you are looking for a job and provide supporting evidence to qualify for a government fully funded course. Level 2 entitlement If you are aged years old you may be entitled to free tuition if you do not already have a qualification at or above Level 2. Maths and English All maths and English courses are free this includes English and Maths GCSE if you do not already have a grade A-C. If you have an A-C grade the normal course fee applies All qualification courses are free for learners aged Family learning courses are free. Community Learning (non-qualification) Course Fees: Courses are listed with two fees, the first fee is the full fee and the second is the concessionary fee. You are eligible for the concessionary fee if you are in receipt of a means tested benefit. You will need to provide supporting evidence to qualify for this concession. We also offer some courses at a discounted fee, these are: Keeping active courses are offered at a discounted rate of 2 per hour for all learners whether in receipt of benefits or not. These courses are aimed at our older learners and run in the day time throughout the borough. 27

28 Taster sessions If you wish to try out a class before enrolling, you can attend a class for one session for only 10. This amount will be deducted from the course fee if you then enrol on the course. Tasters are subject to availability and do not guarantee you a place on the course after the taster session. Refunds Refunds of course fees are only given if: The class is closed by the Service and there is no suitable alternative. The learner is unable to attend for medical reasons and has an appropriate medical certificate Resource, examination and assessment fees are not refundable. In exceptional circumstances, Credit Vouchers can be issued for future courses and are valid for 6 months from the date of issue. Please note the Service is unable to make refunds for absence due to changes in work commitments or in personal or financial circumstances or any other reason for not attending the course. For further details about this entitlement and whether it applies to you please contact our enquiry line Feedback We are always seeking to improve our service and we welcome your views. You can also use one of our Learner Feedback forms available at any of our centres or call Attendance Attend to achieve You will gain most from your course if you attend regularly; also for many qualification courses there is a minimum attendance requirement in order to achieve. Course Information Sheets set out what you can expect to achieve on your course this assumes that you are present throughout the course. However, we do appreciate that sometimes absence is unavoidable. If you cannot attend a class, please let us know by phoning Meadowbank or learnerviews@ hounslow.gov.uk so that we can inform your coursed tutor. If you do not attend your class for three consecutive sessions and we are not notified, you may be automatically withdrawn from the course, so please stay in touch! 28

In order to make a complaint, please first speak to your tutor or a member of staff at your main centre. If you are not satisfied that your complaint has been resolved, please contact your curriculum manager. If you are still not satisfied that your complaint has been dealt with effectively, your complaint will be referred to the Assistant Head of Service. 31 Support for Learners How can I get information and advice about a course before I enrol? Many of your questions can be answered by reading the full Course Information Sheet, available for every course advertised in this prospectus. You can get a Course Information Sheet from any of our centres or from our website If you would like more information and advice, our specialist department staff would be pleased to talk to you, via , telephone or in person. The address and contact phone number for our curriculum teams are on p51 and you can also find these details in the relevant section of this Prospectus. What if I need help with childcare? Subsidised childcare may be available. Funding and places are limited, please ask about availability when you enrol. What if I need extra help with my learning? We aim to make our courses accessible to everyone, and help all our learners to achieve, whatever your level. The support we can provide could include any of the following: Reading and writing English language Numeracy In class note taking Sign language Specialist equipment Adapted materials Exam concessions (your course manager will be happy to discuss the examination concessions that are available to learners and advise if you qualify) We can provide support inside and outside the classroom. A Learning Support Assistant (LSA) may work alongside you to build confidence, take notes, provide extra instruction and interpret, using sign language or possibly your first language. If, before you enrol, you think you may need additional help to do your course, just ask one of our centre staff for an additional learning support (ALS) form (a member of staff can help you complete this if you need help, just ask). 31

32 Your request will be treated in the strictest confidence and you will be invited to an assessment by one of our qualified staff. Your permission will be sought before any information is passed on to anyone. If you are on a course and think you need help, talk to your tutor who can arrange an assessment for you. Do you have computers I can use out of class time? ICT rooms in our dedicated centres are available to learners to use out of class time, when courses are not running. We also have computers in the Latimer Lounge at our Meadowbank Centre and Hounslow library that can be used whenever the centre or library is open. It s advisable to phone to book in advance. Information on access to computer rooms is available at Centres, please ask at reception or ask your tutor about this. Can you help if I cannot afford the fees? If you are experiencing financial hardship and are unable to meet all the costs of your course, please ask the staff at the main centre and they will be able to advise you about our Discretionary Learner Support Funding, which is available for certain qualification courses. Can I pay by instalments? If courses cost more than 150 and you cannot pay the whole fee at enrolment you can pay the fee in monthly Direct Debit instalments, which will be agreed on an individual basis. You will need to pay 50% of the course fee at enrolment. Please ask at enrolment for further details. Please note that you are still liable for the course fees even if you withdraw from the course.
