2 Childcare Courses & Working with Children The Childcare sectors have always been popular with those who want to be involved in the development of children in their formative years as well as those who aspire to work within the changing environment of today s schools. If you are interested in working with children and young people, our courses could equip you with the skills and abilities to deliver a first-class service as well as enable you to progress onto supervisory and management levels. 3 Level 1 Level 2 Level 2 Caring for Children (with English) 2 days per week 36 weeks City & Guilds Children s and Young People s Workforce 2 days per week City & Guilds Teaching Assistants (STLS) 1 day per week This course will provide you with an introduction to caring for children and help you to develop the skills and knowledge you will need to care for children. Topics include: Communicating with children Engaging children through activities Supporting learning Planning for the care of children s physical and emotional needs. You do not need any previous qualifications but you do need a good reference. At interview you will be given a short test in English and Maths to make sure you are on the right course to suit your needs. You will study a wide range of modules and build up a portfolio of evidence for each module. Units include: Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people Child and young person development Positive environments for children and young people Supporting positive behaviour of children and young people Equality and inclusion in children and young people s settings Students are subject to direct observation in the workplace by trained assessors from the College with knowledge assessed via assignments or a portfolio of evidence. In addition, you are encouraged to attend Functional Skills and/or GCSE Maths and English if you do not already have it to ensure career and academic progression to Level 3. You will need to be working or volunteering in a school environment (for at least 1 or 2 days a week). You will also need an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (which we can currently provide for free). You need to have at a minimum Level 1 skills in English and will be asked to do an initial assessment to check your Level of English when you attend your interview. Applicants for all College programmes must declare criminal convictions on their College application form. Important information A placement is mandatory and must be secured within four weeks of the start date of the course. Please contact us for advice and guidance if you do not already have a placement. You will study theoretical modules, including: Providing support for learning activities Supporting child development Keeping children safe Contributing to positive relationships Providing effective support to colleagues In addition, you are encouraged to attend Functional Skills and/or GCSE Maths and English if you do not already have it to ensure career and academic progression to Level 3. You will need to be working or volunteering in a school environment for at least 1 or 2 days a week with children or young people aged between 5-19 years old. 4 Level 3 Early Years Educator 2 day per week placement hours This course is for students who want to work with children under the age of 5 years. You will be completing 23 units under four themes: Theme 1: Health and Wellbeing Theme2: Legislation, frameworks and professional practice Theme 3: Play, development and learning for school readiness Theme 4: Professional development Students are subject to direct observation in the workplace by trained assessors from the College with knowledge assessed via assignments or a portfolio of evidence. You must have GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above, or working towards it. You will not be counted in the ratio in the childcare setting if you have not achieved this. Level 4 Childcare Ask us about progression opportunities at Level 4. Call us on or Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma Teacher Training 3 days per week, 1 year Successful completion of this new Access to Higher Education Diploma could enable you to progress onto study a range of teaching degrees. Units include: Study Skills Reading and comprehension of texts Writing standard English Note taking note making Essay writing ungraded Teacher Training Literacy and Numeracy in the classroom Becoming a reflective practitioner Classroom management Current issues in education Curriculum planning The National Curriculum Education and Special Educational Needs (SEN) 6 credits Using role play in the classroom Education and democracy Inclusive Education Planning and delivering a micro-teaching session Psychology/Sociology Socio-economic factors in educational achievement Educational psychology Education and child development This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if they have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths. GCSE requirements for Access applicants In order to progress to certain Higher Education courses, you may require GCSE English and/ or GCSE Maths to fulfil your university entry requirements. Ideally you will already have GCSE Maths and English at grade A*-C. However, we understand that not all students meet this requirement and so you will be considered for an Access course if you have one GCSE at grade A*-C in Maths or English and the other at grade D. GCSE or functional skills courses will be offered as an additional option for the Access course, with some GCSE classes delivered in the evening. If you do not have any GCSEs or equivalent qualifications then we will be able to recommend you for another course based on the results of your initial assessment at interview. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans If you are aged 24 or over, student loans are available for eligible learners aged 24 and over undertaking advanced courses such as Access to Higher Education Diplomas.
