19 Courses and qualifications Full-time ESOL courses are offered at five different levels (see page 20). Screening and initial assessment tests are set to determine the correct level for each student. ESOL students will be able to gain nationally recognised qualifications (City and Guilds) in the use of English in all four language skills i.e. speaking, listening, reading and writing. There will also be the opportunity to work on some additional skills: Life in the UK / Citizenship Computer skills and on-line learning Numeracy Work Skills The Citizenship course explores culture, history, geography, education, law and the economic situation in the UK. It is recommended for students who wish to improve their English language skills and apply for citizenship, leave to remain in the UK or the British Passport. Full-time or part-time? However, for students working at a higher level of English (ESOL levels 1 and 2) the full-time programme might be made up of ESOL and other courses offered by the College (see Progression, below). Fees ESOL courses are free to year old students who are UK or EU citizens or have the right to be resident in the UK. For example: BTEC Level 1 Courses: Portsmouth College currently offers Level 1 BTEC Courses in: Sport & Leisure, Caring for Children, Public Services, ICT and Art & Design Please see pages 6-12 in this brochure Higher level BTECs, GCSEs and AS/A levels Opportunities may be available in a wide range of courses for students with an appropriate level of English. 22 Apprenticeships at Level 2 (Intermediate) What is an apprenticeship? In recent years increasing numbers of students have chosen to move on to an Apprenticeship after school or college. Apprentices do real jobs for real employers. So you re paid while you learn, from day one of your Apprenticeship. As an Apprentice you will usually be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week and earn while you work towards a nationally recognised qualification. The National Minimum Wage for apprentices is 2.68 per hour although many can earn much more. You will spend much of your time learning on the job but there is also a classroom/theory element to all apprenticeships, based in college. The key website for more information on apprenticeships in general is: Portsmouth College Apprenticeship Scheme: earn while you learn The College offers its own range of apprenticeships at Intermediate, Advanced and Higher level. Listed below are the apprenticeships we offer at intermediate level (level 2). In each case you would work for most of the week with an employer and spend on average one day per week in the classroom. Full details of all of our apprenticeship pathways can be found on the College's apprenticeship website:
