4 Frequently asked questions I ve not done any studying for many years: will I find the course too difficult? Our students come from a range of backgrounds and have had a variety of educational and work experiences. The University provides a full range range of support services and resources and module tutors are available to help individual students with any academic problems. How much time will I have to commit to the course? The course is delivered via weekly face-to-face teaching sessions, mostly on a Wednesday evening. We generally recommend a further 3-5 hours individual background reading or research per week. Some additional work will be needed for assignments and examination revision. It s worth noting that the vast majority of our students quickly develop a routine that accommodates the demands of the course and go on to successful completion. I m not very good at theory: will this be a problem? As you would expect, the taught sessions include the mainstream management theories but our tutors will use familiar practical examples and up to date case studies to help explain these. You will also be encouraged to discuss the application of these theories to your own organisation or a workplace that you are familiar with. Who teaches on the course? Several tutors teach on the course and bring a wealth of general and specialist management experience. They work in industry, the public sector, as well as in higher education, and their special interests include: human resource management, marketing, finance and accounting, information management, project management and organisational theory. You will encounter a range of teaching styles and will be able to tap into their knowledge and expertise to help develop your own management knowledge. What will a typical Wednesday evening session be like? The sessions typically include lectures, group discussions of case studies (written or videos) and practical exercises. Many students have told us how much they value the opportunity to interact socially with others on the course and to learn from each other s experiences. How will I be assessed? We use a range of different assessment methods, including individual written essays and reports, on line e-tivities, group and individual presentations, one exam (with pre-seen questions or a Case study) and A final project on a management topic of interest to you.
5 It s worth emphasising that the aim of all of these assessments is to help you develop personally as a manager, not to build hurdles to stop you getting the Certificate! You will find all the tutors extremely supportive in helping you reach the required standard.
