1 A guide to courses at Crisis Skylight Edinburgh Winter Term Monday 11 January to Thursday 24 March 2016 You are welcome to join any of our classes at any time during Winter Term.

2 HEALTH AND WELLBEING Tai Chi Easy warm-up and conditioning exercise that can improve your health and help you overcome anxiety. What you can do next: Our tutor can give you information about other relaxation and exercise classes. Woodland Fridays! Explore and enjoy a nearby woodland area with a small group. We will have a different focus each week. Learn more about woodland areas within easy reach and use and develop your creative and practical skills. All levels of experience welcome! Meet in the warmth of the Crags Sports Centre reception before heading out together. Dress warm! What you can do next: Our tutor can give you information about similar groups to move on to. COMPUTER SKILLS IT and Communication Learn to use a computer covering different types of software and using the internet or choose to develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking. Work towards achieving a SQA certificate. You can do any SCQF level from 2-5. What you can do next: Progress to the next level of the course or get help to access a course with another provider. IT

For times and venues, see the Winter timetable and noticeboard CULTURE The Songs that Shaped Our Lives Interested in music? How has music shaped your life, helped shaped society and bring about change? This is a new course, developed in discussion with the members forum, learning about the songs that shaped our lives. Led by participants suggestions we will explore the history, culture, music and politics around songs, bands and albums that are really important to you. There will be the opportunity to hear from musicians and others involved in the industry and the chance to present and create work yourselves. You will get free access to CDs and DVDs and can gain a Crisis certificate. What you can do next: Go to the music and singing courses to write your own songs, or learn and perform some of your favourite songs. Work towards a project for the Arts in Crisis festival. Current Affairs Come along and discuss the hot issues of the day to develop your communication skills. The group is based on the issues that affect you and are chosen by group members. What you can do next: You can do the next level of communication or get help to access a course with another provider.

4 READING & WRITING The Story of Football Improve your communication skills through talking, reading, discussing and writing about the beautiful game. What you can do next: You can do the next level of Communication course or get help to access a course with another provider. ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages ESOL You can develop their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. What you can do next: Our tutor can give you information about similar groups to move on to. MEMBER INVOLVEMENT Event Planning Learn how to design, plan and manage events. Plan our next Celebration of Success. What you can do next: Our tutor will also help you to access higher Event Management courses. There will also be opportunities to plan other Crisis events.

5 CRISIS EMPLOYMENT SERVICES Core Skills for Employability Learn to use or update your skills using computers, create a CV or have a mock interview. Everything covered will help increase your employability skills by developing the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that you need in the workplace. You will work towards a SQA certificate in Core Skills. Levels that you can do are from SCQF level 2-5. What you can do next: You can do the next level and your tutor will tell you more about how Crisis can help you find a job. Job and Opportunities Club Get specialist advice and coaching on how to apply for jobs. Our Work and Learning Coach will help you with application forms and practice interview techniques with you.

6 LIFE SKILLS Managing Your Money Learn how to manage your money. Learn how to budget effectively. Find out where and how you can get financial advice. You can work towards achieving a certificate that shows that you understand how to manage your finances. What you can do next: Our tutor will give you information on other services you can use. Cooking and Food Hygiene Learn, cook and eat together on this fun, practical course in cooking on a budget. Try out different methods of cooking and find out new recipes. Discuss tips of how to make your money go further when buying and cooking food and how to cook nutritious meals without a kitchen. You will also work together to cook for others in a café style setup. You will have the opportunity to gain a qualification in Elementary Cooking Skills and a certificate in Food Hygiene. What you can do next: Explore volunteering possibilities with cafes to gain experience to move into catering jobs.

7 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Communicating with Confidence Learn to communicate with confidence. This is a practical course covering how to present information effectively, obtain information from others and engage in a discussion. This course will help you deal with many daily activities e.g. dealing with neighbour issues, dealing with sales calls, contacting DWP or the local council office. You can work towards a qualification if you want. What can you do next: You can work towards an SQA qualification in Communication. For times and venues, see the Winter timetable and noticeboard VISUAL ARTS Art Come and try painting, sketching, drawing, sculpture, mask making or mosaic. All levels welcome from beginners to experienced artists. What you can do next: You can do a qualification in Art, and your tutor can give advice on local art college courses in the area as well as other creative opportunities. There is also the opportunity to have your work exhibited in a gallery. Open Cinema Choose which films you would like to see. Take part in discussions about and have the opportunity to interview actors, writers, directors and producers. What you can do next: Please speak to your tutor if you have an interest in film making. We have had film making courses before and might put them on the timetable again.

8 PERFORMING ARTS Music Play, write and listen to music in a band workshop. All levels welcome from beginners to advanced musicians. All instruments and vocalists welcome (guitars and keyboard provided). No experience necessary. What you can do next: You can take a qualification in music. Your tutor can also give you advice on local music courses. There will be opportunities to perform at Crisis events. Singing Come along and enjoy singing in a relaxed environment. Sing blues, gospel, folk rock and pop music in a group. Explore harmonies and writing lyrics. Opportunity for solos too and to work on singing technique. No experience necessary all levels welcome. What you can do next: Your tutor can give you advice on local music courses. There will be opportunities to perform at Crisis events. Dance Try out different dance styles in our classes with Dance Base. No experience is necessary and all levels are welcome. What you can do next: Dance Base will tell you about community courses that you could join. Drama Take part in a production and study drama, creative writing and learn about technical theatre. No experience is necessary and all levels are welcome. What you can do next: Your tutor can give you advice on local drama and technical theatre courses. There will be opportunities to perform at Crisis events.
