1 Course Information Guide CALAT Central Croydon Centre Clocktower Studio 9 Katharine Street Croydon CR9 1ET CALAT City & Guilds City & Guilds Photography 2015/16 at the Clocktower studio City & Guilds qualifications offer professionally recognised qualifications for those who want to develop their skills to a more advanced level or work as a professional photographer. Many previous learners have moved on to further education or employment in the photographic industry. Our courses are all taught by professional photographers, in our fully equipped photographic studio at. Please note that our City & Guilds Photography courses are not for open enrolment, you will be required to attend a free information & assessment session before being offered a place. 2 Photography courses Our City & Guilds Photography Courses take place at our Clocktower Studio in CALAT Croydon Centre at Croydon Clocktower in Katharine Street. Whether you are aiming for a part time, or full time, career in photography, or, simply to improve your skills, you will be encouraged to achieve your full potential. Our tutors are all highly qualified professional photographers who work in the profession. Our students have 45% of all the awards in the City & Guilds National Photographic competition. Our youngest City and Guild s learner won Medal of Excellence for the best Level 2 work in the country. More students than ever are having work published and undertaking professional assignments. To enrol on one of our courses you must first attend an Information Session at which time your current level of skills will be assessed to ensure that you enrol on the course most appropriate for you. If you wish to apply please bring with you 5 recent examples of your photography. To join one of our courses you must have a DSLR camera. If you are uncertain about the camera that you intend using please bring it with you to the Information Session. Our courses involve a lot of work but are also a lot of fun. Our aim at CALAT is to produce great photographers. Information about course content will be given at the free information and assessment sessions, full details at the end of this brochure. Learners who do not possess qualifications in English and Maths may be required to do an assessment. Confirmation of this will be given at your information and guidance session. Please bring any relevant qualifications with you for English and maths. 2

3 CONTENT City & Guilds Level 1 units: The first 10 weeks will be a primarily focused on unit 101. This will be an exploration of various topics with assignments that are designed to reinforce and assess progress and understanding. The topics will include both technical and creative challenges. You will look at; focus, exposure, shutter speeds, apertures, white balance, camera metering, focus modes, tracking modes plus additional camera settings both creatively and technically. You will also on camera flash, investigate composition, depth of field, creative angles and what makes a good photograph. The second 10 weeks for unit 108 will primarily be based on Photoshop elements. An adobe software programme that will allow you to manipulate your images. You will study, colour controls, tone and contrast controls, adding different backgrounds, cutting out using a range of different methods, retouching and repairing images, hand colouring, adding filters, adding type, re sizing and preparing images for print. Challenging assignments are designed to develop your technical and creative skills, introducing you to possible portfolio options and different genres of photography. You are encouraged to be creative and adventurous. The final part of the course will revisit some of the photographic areas and topics covered in the first term, exploring them in more depth. This is about a combination of presentation, approaches unit 107, where we look at how to present your images well, using a variety of different methods. More photographic challenges towards the end will be an opportunity to work further on Photoshop, presentation and images, including written work in class as preparation for final submission of work for all 3 units. You will be able to submit ideas, proposals, statements of intent and practice write ups for the units inside and outside class. Both the written, as well as visual aspects of the course are compulsory for successful completion of this Level 1 course. For more information please refer to the course outlines on the website. 3

4 CONTENT City and Guilds Level 2: units 206, 215 All the outcomes defined by City and Guilds will be addressed during the course through a range of different challenges, both theoretical and practical. We will study different genres of photography: Portraiture Still life Reportage Documentary Architecture Landscape Sport For the first unit we will study some of the masters of these genres and of photography in general. Assignments and practical lessons will re enforce learning and develop skills whilst, stimulating creative thinking, equipping the student with the creative and technical skills needed to develop as a photographer. We will look at the commercial and aesthetic requirements of each genre, its challenges and rewards, but this course is primarily about you developing the skills to take the photographs you want to take. It will encourage you to explore new things, to learn through experimentation, apply a creative and individual approach to each study area. The first term will primarily focus on developing skills through the very flexible genre of portraiture. This is a good introduction into studio lighting. The second term will focus on photo journalism and still life. The third term, on landscape, architecture, sport and nature. This will include field trips. Whilst this is the general layout of the course, timings may change but the content and learning outcomes will be the same. The second unit is unit 215 Image manipulation. This is covered primarily in the second and third terms, looking at optimizing the quality of images from shoot to print, how to adjust your images, correcting any faults with your photos in a range of different ways, considering both the pros and cons of each method. We will be looking at exploring the creative side of manipulation and understanding its limitations. For further information please also refer to the course outlines on our website. Both written and visual elements of this course are compulsory for successful completion of this course. 4

6 As directed by the Skills Funding Agency 2015/16 Funding Eligibility of Learners for ACCREDITED courses delivered in the CLASSROOM XRAT No fees to be paid S FEE Learners aged 16 to Under 19 yrs as at NOT in full time education Learners aged yrs up to Entry or Level 1 and Level 2courses with no Full Level 2 or above qualifications (excl ESOL) Studying FIRST full level 2 qualification Studying FIRST full level 3 qualification Studying their FIRST full level 4 without achieving first full level 3 Unemployed and need help to move into work including Level 3 courses if in receipt of benefits see list of benefits below on table for Learners over 19 yrs Learners aged 16 to Under 19 yrs as at S FEE if in full time education (not eligible for EFA funding) Learners aged 19-23yrs Pay S fee if not doing one of the qualifications listed under XRAT box for this age group Learners aged over 19 yrs courses up to Level 2 JSA (inc those receiving NI credits only) ESA (WRAG) where joint claim, then both are eligible but not dependants JSA working under 16 hours Unemployed on Universal Credit and mandated to undertake skills training Unemployed and taking the course to help enter employment and in receipt of one of the following: Income Support Housing or Council Tax benefit Pensions Credit (Savings Credit only is not sufficient) Universal Credit not mandated to undertake skills training Studying a numeracy or English course Studying a Maths and/or English GCSE (if do not have a grade A*-C) Learner 24 yrs and over.. studying Cert, Dip at Level 3 or higher Pay S Fee or apply for 24+ Loan Awards at Level 2 & 3 for 19+ learners not unemployed and not on benefits Home student pays S Fee V Fee if not a Home Student Learner aged 19 and over..
