You may also improve your English and Maths skills while you are studying another subject. This can be done by extra help in class or by going to a workshop. 3 Teacher Training The College of North West London offers you a choice of teaching qualifications. For those who have always wanted to teach in primary schools but do not have any formal qualifications then our Access to Teaching course prepares you for higher level study. The minimum age for admission to this course is 21 years. If you want to teach in FE colleges or train adults then our City & Guilds 7302 course could be for you. If you are teaching in FE colleges and want to get Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) FE, then our City & Guilds 7407 courses are for you. If you want to train to be an ESOL, Literacy or Numeracy teacher, we offer specialist teacher training courses. Web: Course Information Centre:
4 Delivering Learning: An Introduction - City & Guilds 7302 Level 3 Certificate. Code: BHCT This course is for those who are considering a career in further education or adult and community teaching or the training of adults. Success on the course could enable you to progress to professional adult teaching or further teacher training qualifications. Selection for the course is by interview and written communication assessment. The minimum age for admission to this course is 23 years 7302 Certification in Delivering Learning. Subjects you will study include: key principles of delivering learning, planning and preparing teaching sessions and delivery of a micro-teaching session. Two hours a week for 21 weeks (day or evening) starting September. Wembley Park Centre. City & Guilds 7407 Courses These courses are for those who need a qualification to teach adults. The qualification is part of the Further Education Teacher s Certificate (FENTO), Qualified Teacher Status (QTFE) initiative. The QTFE status is gained once you have passed all three stages of the qualification. Combined Stage 1 & Stage 2 Code: BHCD / BHCE This award is aimed at unqualified teachers in the further and adult and community education sector. The minimum age for admission to this course is 23 years. Also, at the time of application, you must have a guaranteed minimum of 60 hours of teaching during the course, in further education or the adult and community education sector. Other requirements are GCSE English and maths or equivalent or a Key Skills Level 2 qualification and a qualification in your own subject at a level higher than the level being taught. City & Guilds 7407 Level 4 Certificate in Further Education Teaching Stage 1 (QTFE 1) and City & Guilds 7407 Level 4 Certificate in Further Education Teaching Stage 2 (QTFE 2). This qualification can lead to the City & Guilds 7407 Level 4 Certificate in Further Education Teaching Stage 3 (QTFE 3). Subjects you will study include: identifying and assessing learners needs, planning and managing the learning process, using techniques and facilitating learning, principles of learning, developing resources, support and guidance, assessment, educational issues and personal development. The SfL Minimum Core requirementns. This course involves classroom based study in the form of lectures, discussions, group work, and case study analysis. There is a teaching practice requirement of 60 hours. There will be at least ten assignments of between 1,000 and 2,000 words each and seven one hour assessed teaching practice sessions. 6 Stage 3 Code: BHCF This course is for teachers in further education and the adult and community education sector who have a Level 4 Certificate for Further Education Teachers Stage 2 (QTFE 2). You should have attained the Stage 2 City & Guilds 7407 Certificate and fulfilled the qualification entry requirements for Stage One. Selection for the course is by written assessment and interview. The minimum age for admission to this course is 23 years City & Guilds Level 4 Certificate in Further Education Teaching Stage 3 (QTFE 3). To education courses in the university sector. Employment full-time or part-time. Subjects you will study include: assessing learners needs, planning learning programmes, accessing learning, developing teaching and learning techniques, managing the learning process, maintaining quality, providing learners with support, assessing the outcomes of learning and learners achievements, continuing professional development and working within a professional value base. This course involves classroom based study, discussions, group work and case study analysis. There is a teaching practice requirement of 60 hours in further education. There are ten assignments of between 1,000 and 2,000 words each and five one hour assessed teaching practice sessions. One day a week for a year. Wembley Park Centre. Skills For Life Teacher Training Introduction to Literacy, Numeracy or ESOL Teaching Certificate for Adult Learner Support Code LACA Who is this course for? This free course is for people who are interested in working as volunteers in ESOL, literacy or numeracy classes. The course helps you appreciate the difficulties which face adult learners and suggests ways of working with them. Courses are available at Kilburn on a Tuesday or Thursday. There are two courses one beginning November the other January. Voluntary work, a Level 3 Certificate in Adult Literacy or Numeracy Subject Support, Wider awareness of the Skills for Life agenda, Teacher training. Unit 1 - Working in the Sector. The roles and context of the supporter, The Adult Literacy, Language & Numeracy context, Identifying needs. Unit 2 - Working as part of a team, helping with care and support, helping the learner, helping with resources. Unit 3 - Specialising in ESOL, Literacy or Numeracy support Direct teaching. 10 hour (minimum) placement. Group work and experiential learning activities. What support is available while I am on the course? Group & individual tutorials Personal Development Journal. Open book exam at the end of Unit 1. Assignment at the end of Unit 3. 6 Teacher Training
7 What qualification will I receive? Level 2 Certificate for Adult Learner Support in Literacy, Numeracy or ESOL, City & Guilds What are the entry qualifications? Literacy and numeracy Skills at Level 2. Support to achieve this standard can be negotiated. Days and times of study Tuesday evening 6-9pm starting November Thursday daytime starting in January Literacy Learning to Teach English Adult Literacy Subject Support City & Guilds 9483 Code: LACSD1AW This course is either for vocational teachers in further education who want to fulfil the literacy teaching requirement, or for those who would like to work as literacy support assistants in further education. You should have a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths. Selection involves an interview and a written assessment. Small-group teaching practice is required and you should have a placement organised in order to be accepted on the course. Certificate in Adult Literacy Subject Support - City & Guilds 9483 Level 3 It can lead to an initial teacher training course at Level 4. The course can also be used alongside other teaching qualifications for literacy support purposes. Subjects you will study include: knowledge and understanding of literacy and language frameworks, the role of language and dialect in society, learning theories, lesson planning and ways of working with teachers in a classroom. Four hours a week for 15 weeks. Willesden Centre. Teacher Training Stage 2 for Literacy Teaching Code: LACT You should have the City and Guilds 7407 Stage 1 Certificate for Literacy teachers. City & Guilds 7407 Stage 2 in a literacy context The course includes principles of learning, initial and diagnostic assessment, ILPs, how to develop a scheme of work, developing reading, writing and speaking skills. A variety of teaching approaches is used which encourage and model a range of teaching and learning strategies. Practical teaching tutorials and teaching observations. Assessment is on a continuous basis. It includes teaching practice observation and completion of written assignments making up a portfolio of evidence. One afternoon and evening session per week for 24 weeks. Wembley Park Certificate in Further Education Teaching Stage 3 with the Certificate for ESOL Subject Specialists. 8 ments for teaching English in the Further, Adult and Community Education in England and Wales Numeracy Learning to Teach Maths Adult Numeracy Subject Support: - City & Guilds 9484 Level 3 Certificate Code: LACR This course is either for vocational teachers in further education who want to fulfil the numeracy teaching requirement, or for those who would like to work as numeracy support assistants in further education. You should have a Level 2 qualification in English & Maths. Selection involves an interview and a written assessment. Small-group teaching practice is required and you should have a placement organised in order to be accepted on the course Adult Numeracy Subject Support - City & Guilds 9484 Level 3 Certificate. It can lead to a Level 4 numeracy course, or an initial teacher training course. The course can also be used alongside other teaching qualifications for numeracy support purposes. Subjects you will study include: social and personal factors affecting learning, numbers, measurement and spatial awareness, statistics, working with formulae and Learning Support practice Four hours a week for 15 weeks Wembley Park Centre. ESOL Certificate in Further Education Teaching with the Certificate for ESOL Subject Specialists Module 1 - CELTA Code: LJBC The course is aimed at those who would like to teach English for Speakers of Other Languages, both in the UK and abroad. It is for those who have little or no experience of teaching ESOL or EFL. It is also suitable for experienced teachers who would like to become ESOL subject specialists. You should be at least 20 years of age, be educated to at least entry to higher education level and have a high level of competence in both written and spoken English. You will be required to attend an interview. The CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) Can lead to Module 2: Certificate in Further Education Teaching 3 with the Certificate for ESOL Subject Specialists. The course meets the FENTO standards and covers the subject specifications for teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages. Subjects you will study include: language analysis from the point of view of the learner, teaching methodology for the presentation and practice of language, principles of language selection, techniques for skills development, evaluation of teaching materials and the use of audio-visual aids and ILT. Selection for the course is by interview and assessment. London Open College Network (LOCN) Certificate. You will study English, mathematics, science, educational studies, humanities and information technology. Study skills are an integral part of the course. The course is taught through a variety of methods: lectures, classroom discussion, group work, etc. You are encouraged to develop your skills by carrying out independent research and through individual and group presentations. 10 Teaching Assistants Certificate Code: AFRT This course will introduce you to the concepts of effectively supporting a classroom teacher, develop your ability to implement these concepts and provide an opportunity for reflecting upon the skills you are acquiring. You are expected to have a sufficient level of English and maths in order to provide support in the classroom. You will have an assessment at interview. City & Guilds NVQ 2 Certificate for Teaching Assistants. Subjects you will study include: assisting with classroom resources, supporting literacy and numeracy within the classroom and understanding pupil behaviour and motivating pupils. One evening a week for a year and one day a week in a school setting Willesden Centre. Community Training Code: BHDP Who is this course for? This is a new qualification by the London Open College Network (LOCN). The course is suitable for individuals, community or voluntary organisations. It is designed to train and support people who want to make their local community or individual involvement more effective. You should have experience of working in the community. You will be assessed on your English and maths skills at interview. You should be able to participate in group discussions and debates. What qualification will I receive? London Open College Network (LOCN) Level 2 Certificate in Community Training & Skills Development. The course will help you get the skills to set up own community group/s or create employment opportunities and progression to the Postgraduate Certificate in Citizenship or Community Leadership, Project Management or Foundation Certificate in Marketing. Subjects you will study include: local community work in the context of social regeneration, local authority work in the context of procedures and policies, working in partnership, local community work the operational context, planning and fundraising, introduction to community project development management, organising public and community events, interpersonal skills in the community and voluntary sector, applications, interviews and CVs. This is a highly participative programme tackling a number of individual skills, community and voluntary activities. Five hours of attendance is required and most importantly individual or private study is essential coupled with enthusiasm, knowledge and understanding. You will be assessed and or observed by experienced tutors in the field through a portfolio of course based tasks, covering each of the areas of study. You will have to bring written testimonials signed by a manager/supervisor to indicate evidence of work you have done. This will be used as evidence of achievement.
