Students wrk within a variety f prfessinal settings that are related t their majr and future career interests. Students are required t spend a minimum f 90 clck hurs at their internship. This is a 3 credit hur curse. Student vlunteer hurs that are pre-apprved by the Crrectins Internship Crdinatr fr special prjects can be included as a prtin f the 90 hurs at the Crdinatrs discretin. Curse Outcmes 1. Cmpare and cntrast the principles learned in the academic setting t thse learned in the internship setting. 2. Describe a crrectins career area and its wrk requirements. 3. Obtain relevant crrectins wrk experience and cntacts fr future jb seeking. 4. Manage grups f crrectinal clients in an internship setting. 5. Cmmunicate with crrectinal clients in a respective setting.

2 6. Cmmunicate and wrk with ther staff members in a crrectins setting. 7. Plan and implement prgrams/prtcls/plicy, curriculum, and/r activities as apprpriate fr the internship setting. 8. Prepare necessary dcuments, including a daily lg, needed t successfully btain and cmplete the internship. Curse Schedule 1. Yu will meet with yur instructr at the beginning f the semester. Prir t that meeting, mst f the curse infrmatin will be available n yur internship Blackbard site and the grcc.edu/criminal justice website under Crrectins Internship. 2. Yu are required t maintain an active GRCC accunt and t check yur and Blackbard site at least twice a week fr infrmatin and updates. 3. Each student is required t btain a site placement with a facility/agency/prgram within Crrectins r related t Crrectins prir t the beginning f the semester. The Internship Crdinatr will assist yu when pssible. 4. The student is required t maintain a daily lg f activities during the curse f the internship. Names and details f citizen and specifically client cntacts shuld be deleted t prtect bth the citizen and the crrectinal client. 5. Yu must submit the daily lg at the cmpletin f the internship. It must shw that yu cmpleted a minimum f 90 hurs at the agency. 6. The student is required t submit a Prtfli, which is submitted at the cmpletin f the internship. 7. The final part f the curse requires a meeting with each student, their site supervisr, and the GRCC Intern Advisr. The purpse f the brief meeting is t g ver the placement and discuss the intern experience. This meeting is nrmally held at the hst site. Due Dates Please see blackbard and paperwrk fr all due dates. The Prtfli Deadline is the last day f the semester f yur internship. Please nte that yu can submit yur Prtfli prir t the end f the date. Curse Plicies This is a prfessinal experience taking place within an rganizatin that yu, r thers in the Crrectins Prgram, may wish t be emplyed in at sme future time. Therefre, yur attitude, manner f dress, and apprach t this internship must reflect a high level f prfessinalism. Yu are representing all f thse assciated with GRCC s Crrectins Prgram! Any behavirs that reflect prly upn it (tardiness, inapprpriate attire, vilatins f cnfidentiality, r negative attitudes, etc.) will nt be tlerated and may result in yur remval frm the internship.

PLEASE NOTE: Occasinally, the final meeting cannt be arranged befre the end f the semester. In these cases, the student will receive an I grade (Incmplete), which has n impact n the student s GPA. After the meeting is held, the grade is changed t the ne that is actually earned in the curse. Any student whse status may be adversely affected by an I grade (i.e. nt getting n the Dean s List, prblems with lans r grants, military status, etc.) must ntify the Internship Crdinatr.

During the internship students are able t link their academic fundatin t real wrld functining. The curse prvides a structured and extended ff-campus experience in a supervised setting fr Crrectins Majrs. Students wrk within a variety f prfessinal settings that are related t their majr and future career interests. Students are able t participate in placements during the fall, winter and summer semesters. Prir t placement, students are required t submit an Applicatin Packet fr an Internship in Crrectins. The minimum requirements fr placement are: 1. An verall 2.0 GPA. 2. An verall 2.0 GPA in criminal justice curses. 3. Nt n Academic Prbatin. 4. Cmpletin f all 100 level criminal justice curses in Crrectins Degree prgram. 5. A schedule that allws cmpletin f a minimum f 90 hurs during the semester f placement. When selecting yur internship, yu can lk thrugh the resurce guide n the Criminal Justice website. Listed n the resurce guide are internship sites that we have either had students cmplete their internships at r the Criminal Justice department has cntacts with. 12 Criminal Justice Department CJ 286 Crrectins II Internship Site Agreement Grand Rapids Cmmunity Cllege, in cperatin with varius criminal justice agencies, seeks t ensure that students enhance their educatinal experience by participatin in an internship prgram that invlves actual wrk experience. T attain that gal, the Criminal Justice Department is prviding a site agreement t clarify cnditins under which the agency may participate in this internship experience. Site Crdinatr In rder t ensure cmmunicatin between the cllege (GRCC) and the agency, the agency will appint an internship crdinatr (site crdinatr). All cmmunicatin regarding interns assigned t the agency will be directed t this individual. The site crdinatr shall be: Phne # The agency may, frm time t time, change the individual assigned as site crdinatr. If such a change is made, the agency shall ntify the Criminal Justice Department as sn as pssible. Internal Plicies, Rules and Regulatins Gverning Internships The agency shall furnish a cpy f all plicies, rules and regulatins regarding internships r related areas. The intern/student assigned t the agency will be prvided cpies f said dcuments and held respnsible fr their cntent. Cpies will be prvided t the Cllege instructr and kept n file. Evaluatin Frms The Criminal Justice Department will supply frms t be used t frmally evaluate the student thrughut the internship. The agency agrees that the site crdinatr will ensure that an evaluatin frm, cmpleted by a persn familiar with the student during the internship, is validated, signed, and frwarded t the Criminal Justice Department at the end f the internship experience. Site Visits and/r Telephne Cntact It is agreed that an internship crdinatr frm the Criminal Justice Department will make at least ne site visit during the curse f the internship, and/r at a minimum, cntact by telephne with the site crdinatr. Cntact frm the Criminal Justice Department will be made t cnfirm placement. These cntacts d nt preclude cntact with the schl at any time perfrmance prblems arise with the intern. Duties f the Site Crdinatr and Student Attached t this agreement is an explanatin f the duties f the site crdinatr and expectatins (syllabus) f students assigned t the agency as internships. Nature f Duties Intern Will Perfrm As part f the internship applicatin prcess, the intern will be interviewed by the agency. Part f the interview is t clarify the duties and wrk assignments that the student will engage in. Said duties then

13 becme part f the frmal agreement between the student and the Criminal Justice Department. It is agreed that the intern will be assigned t duties which are relevant t their field f study and d nt put the intern/student at und risk. It is imprtant that the student understand what these duty assignments will be t ensure a quality internship experience. Selectin Prcess 1. The student will cntact the Criminal Justice Department regarding their interest in participating in an internship. Fllwing ur initial review and prvisin f apprpriate academic dcumentatin, we will issue the student a letter f reference detailing their interest in an internship with yur agency. Any student wh des nt have this letter upn cntact with yur agency has nt been referred by the Criminal Justice Department f Grand Rapids Cmmunity Cllege and shuld be referred back t ur ffice. 2. The student shall participate in an interview with the site crdinatr. Fllwing this interview, and in the ther selectin prcedures that the agency deems necessary, t include a driver s license and r criminal histry check, the intern candidate will be frmally accepted by the agency as witnessed by signing the internship agreement that the student will have been issued by the Criminal Justice Department. A signed cpy by bth supervisr and student/intern will then be sent t the Criminal Justice Department fr their recrds. 3. At the cmpletin f the internship experience, nt less than 90 hurs f wrk experience, the intern will cmplete a final reprt. This final reprt will be reviewed and signed by the site crdinatr. Nn Discriminatin. This internship is ffered by the fllwing emplyer frm 20 thrugh, 20, at (lcatin). 2.0 Waiver f Institutin Liability fr the Risks and Dangers. The Undersigned understand that there are certain dangers, hazards, and risks inherent in the internship and assciated activities, including but nt limited t accidents in culinary and hspitality settings and which als culd include serius r even mrtal injuries and prperty damage and that GRCC cannt and des nt assume respnsibility fr any such persnal injuries r prperty damage. 3.0 Participant Respnsibility fr Medical Needs. 3.1 The Undersigned assures GRCC that Participant has cnsulted with a medical dctr with regard t Participant s persnal medical needs and assures GRCC that there are n health related reasns r prblems which preclude r restrict Participant s participatin in this Internship. 3.2 The Undersigned are aware f all applicable persnal medical needs, and have arranged fr adequate hspitalizatin insurance t meet any and all needs fr payment f medical care, including hspital csts while participating in this Internship. (Particularly ut-f-cuntry experiences). The Undersigned agree that GRCC is nt respnsible fr attending t any f Participant s medical r medicatin needs, that the Undersigned assume all risk and respnsibility therefre, and that if Participant is required t be hspitalized while in a freign cuntry r in the United States during this Internship, GRCC des nt assume any legal respnsibility fr payment f such csts.

16 4.0 Disclaimer f Institutin Respnsibility. 4.1 The Undersigned understand that GRCC in n way represents, r acts as agent fr the Internship emplyer, the transprtatin carriers, htels, and ther suppliers f services cnnected with this Internship. The Undersigned acknwledge and understand the GRCC assumes n liability whatsever fr any lss, damage, destructin, theft r the like t Participant s luggage r persnal belngings, and the Participant has retained adequate insurance r has sufficient funds t replace such belngings and will hld GRCC harmless therefrm. 5.2 All services and accmmdatins are subject t the laws f the cuntry in which they are prvided. 6.0 Legal Prblems. The undersigned acknwledges and understands that shuld Participant have r develp legal prblems, Participant will attend t the matter persnally with Participant s wn persnal funds. GRCC is nt respnsible fr prviding any assistance under such circumstances. 7.0 Acceptable Cnduct by Participant. The Undersigned are aware f the expected behavir f Participant while participating in this Internship. The Undersigned is aware that there is certain behavir that is unacceptable and culd lead t pssible disruptin f Participant s participatin in the Internship. The Undersigned assure GRCC that Participant shall act in an apprpriate manner at all times. 8.0 Gverning Law; Frum. The Undersigned further agree that this Agreement shall be cnstrued in accrdance with the laws f the State f Michigan, which shall be the frum fr any lawsuits filed under r incident t this Agreement.

17 9.0 Assumptin f the Risks Invlved. 9.1 Knwing the dangers, hazards, and risks f such activities, the Undersigned, n behalf f the Participant s family, heirs, and persnal representative(s) agree t assume all the risks and respnsibilities surrunding Participant s participatin in this Internship, the transprtatin, and in any independent research r activities undertaken as an adjunct theret, and in advance release, and frever discharge, release, waive, frever discharge, and cvenant nt t sue GRCC, its gverning bard, fficers, agents, emplyees, and any student acting as emplyees ( Releases ), frm and against any and all liability fr any harm, injury, damage, claims, demands, actins, causes f actin, csts, and expenses f any nature whatsever which Participant may have r which may hereafter accrue t the Undersigned, arising ut f r related t any lss, damage, r injury, including but nt limited t suffering and death, that may be sustained by Participant r by any prperty belnging t Participant, whether caused by the negligence r carelessness f the Releases, r therwise, while in, n, upn, r in transit t r frm the Internship lcatin. 9.2 The Undersigned understand and agree that Releases d nt have medical persnnel available at the lcatin f the Internship, during transprtatin, r at the emplyer lcatin. The Undersigned understand and agree that Releases assume n respnsibility fr any injury r damage which might arise ut f r in cnnectin with such authrized emergency medical treatment. 9.3 It is the Undersigned s express intent that this release and hld harmless agreement shall bind the members f the Undersigned s family and spuse, if Participant is alive, and Participant s family, estate, heirs, administratrs, persnal representatives, r assigns, if Participant is deceased, and shall be deemed as a Release, Waiver, Discharge, and Cvenant nt t sue the abve-named Releases.
