Language laboratory is required. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE OBJECTIVES: This online course is designed to assist the student with no prior study of foreign language to acquire the basic skills needed to understand, speak, read, and write elementary Spanish. They should gain insight into the various cultures of Spanish speaking people, and, in so doing, improve their understanding of their own culture. We expect that the average student will achieve the following goals at the end of the academic year: 1. Recognize and pronounce all of the sounds of Spanish with sufficient accuracy to be understood by the native speaker of the language. 2. Express ideas using simple sentences and the vocabulary covered in the text. 3. Use intelligent guessing techniques on new vocabulary items based on context and comprehension of ideas within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures presented in the text. 4. Use written, aural and spoken communication in the present tense, indicative mood. 5. Demonstrate elementary knowledge of important aspects of culture in the Spanish-speaking world such as: geography, climate, family and student life, informal and formal social settings, greetings and farewells, and survival-level skills associated with daily and student life, and travel. Vocabulary associated with travel Dec. 1 Dec. 7 *Oral Exam COURSE REQUIREMENTS: There will be one online, timed quiz given at the end of each chapter. Students will complete assignments given by the instructor. Assignments should be done in good faith and turned in on or before the dates specified. Late work will be penalized by a 50% reduction in assignment points. Assignments submitted more than 7 days after the due date will receive zero (0) points. The lab portion of this course is required and will also be completed online. Students will earn points based on a schedule and criteria to be presented on the Desire 2 Learn class site. Learning a foreign language is a long-term, cumulative, proactive process. Acquiring new words, perfecting enunciation, and gaining confidence are integral parts of the process. Students must set aside and spend time outside of the classroom practicing their newly acquired target-language skills, either alone, with fellow students, or with native speakers. Failure to do so will have a snowballing effect and may result in failing the course. Online students should avail themselves frequently of the listening/speaking links provided by the instructor. In order to be fully prepared for each class session, students must consider vocabulary practice a standing homework obligation. Due to the cumulative nature of foreign language study, vocabulary from past chapters will be considered fair-game on exams. Each week online students will do the following: 1. Log on to the course site several per times. 2. Click and read each topic in the current week s module. 3. Read and jot down the assigned pages in the textbook. Links and instructions will disappear after the current week! 4. Write and electronically submit the assignment(s) and/or do the chapter quiz assigned for the week on time! 5. Write a brief forum post every chapter, checking in with the instructor and fellow cyber-classmates on time! Old forums will close when the chapter is over 6. Log in at least one hour per week at the lab site (Tell Me More). Online students are encouraged to keep in frequent contact with their instructor via the discussion forums and . English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center in C214. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor s , participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course.
