(1-2) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to further the student s knowledge in psychiatric function and those associated disorders commonly encountered in nursing practice. PREREQUISITES: Acceptance into the Hybrid Online AAS in Nursing program. Unencumbered active Illinois LPN license. Successful completion of ADN 203, 205, 206, 207, 210. COURSE OBJECTIVES: COURSE THEORY GOALS: At the completion of ADN 212 the student will: a. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the acute care setting. c. Develop caring relationships with ill adults. (Evaluated in clinical) d. Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and peers. e. Exhibit professional behaviors in accordance with ANA standards of professional f. Individualize nursing care according to the values and cultural differences for g. Provide age specific care. h. Demonstrate competent care of clients with Psychiatric disorders. i. Level II competency on ATI Psychiatric Nursing proficiency test or HESI /meds pubs as utilized by admitting community college. LAB OBJECTIVES: a. Perform skill competencies at a satisfactory level 1. Maintain sterile technique as needed 2. Maintain aseptic technique as needed 3. Demonstrate competency at medication administration 1. Prioritize client care.

Administer medications and fluids appropriately. 3. Identify nutritional needs of clients with Psychiatric disorders. i. Provide safe competent care of clients during clinical experience. 1. Seek and accept responsibility for the care of patients based on scope of practice and level of knowledge. 2. Seeks and accepts constructive criticism. 3. Uses effective communication skills 4. Presents a professional demeanor appropriate for the clinical setting (appearance, dress, behavior, language). j. Level two proficiency of ATI examination for specific course or Hesi/MedsPub (examination of choice as administered by admitting college) Faculty Office Hours: Office hours will be posted via the online course at the beginning of the course. If concerns are related to theory, then see the faculty member assigned to the classroom instruction. If questions relate to clinical concern, then see the assigned clinical instructor. If questions persist, contact the Southern Illinois Online Nursing Initiative Coordinator. COURSE OUTLINE: COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Student Success Center. Tutors may be obtained through the Student Success Center. Contact the staff in C219 if this service is desired. John A. 4 4 English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college course, students are encouraged to visit The Write Place in Room E109. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. METHOD OF EVALUATION: Attendance & Evaluation: The student is expected to be present for each scheduled clinical experience, laboratory practicum, and other assigned learning experiences. In the event of illness or emergency, the student is to notify the clinical instructor personally, AT LEAST ONE HOUR prior to the time to report for a clinical experience. If unable to speak with the instructor, the student is to call the clinical site and leave a message for the instructor. If under the care of a physician, the student must present a release from a physician prior to returning to clinical. GRADING SCALE: A B C E 77 and below Written Examinations, Module completion, Case studies, Clinical Assignments, Skill Assessments and a 90% on Practice ATI Psychiatric Nursing Exam I Exam II Exam III Total possible points 150 *Clinical evaluation by instructor Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory *Written clinical assignments Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory *Successful completion of Mental Health Practice ATI *If written clinical assignment is unsatisfactory, it must be revised and turned in within one week.
