(3-0) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Abnormal Psychology is an introduction to the definition, understanding, and diagnosis of psycho-logical disorders. Historical, cultural, empirical, and theoretical perspectives are combined to address etiology, assessment, treatment, and prevention. PREREQUISITES: PSY 132 or equivalent COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an awareness of the context, rationale, consequences, and controversies associated with defining abnormality. 2. Identify and classify abnormality according to the most recent DSM. 3. Identify the major theoretical perspectives on psychological disorder including biological, psycho-social, and socio-cultural models. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of assessment, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of pathology. 5. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of DSM paradigms. The above list should not be interpreted as exclusive. The textbook and classroom experience will cover many areas too numerous to mention. Students are responsible for all presentations, discussions, assignments, and announcements made in class. Homework is assigned and turned in during class, and only those with excused absences will be allowed to make up or turn in homework late. Students must be regularly attending class to be eligible to make up work. All work turned in must be word-processed and is due at the beginning of class. John A. Logan College has an attendance policy outlined in the student handbook. While attendance is not directly figured into your grade, attendance, preparation, and participation are strongly correlated with class performance, not to mention learning. I am also required to take attendance for financial aid purposes. Appropriate classroom conduct at the college level includes being on time and prepared for class, as well as behaving respectfully toward all others at all times. Tardiness, sleeping in class, working on other course materials during class; vulgar, offensive or inappropriate attire, and any other forms of disrespect are beneath college standards and can result in being excused from the class. Do not come to class late. Students should not enter the classroom once class has begun and the door is shut. If you make arrangements that would require you to leave class early, it is best to forego class and see me regarding make-ups. Please turn all electronic devices to noises off. Do not bring children to class. All guests and visitors must be approved by instructor prior to attendance. Please also note the college policy on cheating and plagiarism.

3 3 Student Success Center (Room C219). Services available for students include tutoring (both scheduled one-on-one tutoring and walk-in tutoring) and Disability Support Services. Students can drop in during the hours of operation for tutoring in the Math Help Room (C219 and C223) or the Biology Help Room (C243A). To receive one-onone tutoring, students should make a request early in the semester in the Student Success Center. The Student Success Center is also the place to arrange accommodations. John A. Logan College will make reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Contact the coordinator of Disability Support Services, Room C219B, ext. 8516, for more information. The coordinator must determine eligibility and arrange appropriate academic accommodations. However, it is the student s responsibility to register in advance of a school term with Disability Support Services and to turn in a class schedule each term to ensure accommodations are arranged. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center in C214. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor s , participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course.

This statement comes from the John A. Logan College Campus Violence Prevention Committee. METHOD OF EVALUATION: Grades will be determined by test scores and assignments (both in- and out-of-class). All work to be turned in must be word-processed. There are 4 tests, each worth 20% of your grade; and one combined homework grade, also worth 20%, for a combined total of 100%. Each test is worth 50 pts. each, as is the combined total of approximately 10 assignments, for a class total of 250 pts. Tests will be of mixed format with multiple choice, true-false, short answer, and brief essay questions. Makeup exams are for illness or other emergencies only, and excuses and makeup arrangements must be approved by the instructor. Please notify the instructor as soon as problems arise, do not wait until you return to class. Please note: the semester continues on through the finals schedule, and alternative finals times are for unavoidable conflicts only, not voluntary travel plans. Grading Scale: 90% = A 80% = B 70% = C 60% = D 50% = E No incomplete grades will be given if the student is not passing at the time of the request.
