1 UNIVERSITY DONA GORICA Center of Foreign languages, Spanish for beginners September December 2015 Professor: Dr. Shai Cohen SYLLABUS Class schedule: Monday: 2.00pm- 3:30pm Wednesday: 2.00pm- 3:30pm CLASS DESCRIPTION Course subject: SPANISH BEGINNERS LEVEL Duration: from Sep. 21 to Dec. 11, 2015 Credits ECTS: 4 Type of course: Optional Language of the course: English

2 Course Learning Objectives: Through this course the student will acquire the basic knowledge of the Spanish language, equivalent to the A1 level according to the European reference. The student will develop the skills in reading comprehension, oral and writing expression as well as the necessaries skills for day to day communication. The course will focus on communication adequate proficiency through the study and understanding of grammatical concepts and the norms and structure of the Spanish language. The successful student will be able to communicate in Spanish on a basic level. Some of the materials that will be taught in class were Spanish celebrations, presentation, family, days of the week, numbers, and much more. The assimilation of the material passed in class will be demonstrated and practiced through a series of class and outdoors activities and will be demonstrated through tests and final evaluation exam. Special attention will be made on the idiomatic weak spots in Spanish when learned as a foreign language (prepositions, verbs ser o estar, grammatical structure etc.). This is why the class will promote active participation and interactive approach of the students. Methodology: Professor s presentations and introduction to Spanish learning. To turn the learning of Spanish into an enriching experience. Grammatical practice and different comprehension exercise and written expression. Active participation of students through participation in class, small group activities and exercises of oral and written work.

3 GENERAL PROGRAM OF CLASSES Week 1: Introduction to Spanish language and culture. Alphabet, letters and pronunciation. Week 2: Gender and Numbers. Origins and Nationality. Week 3: Asking for directions, personal pronouns, verb: ser Week 4: Irregular verbs: tener, estar, days of the week Week 5: Possessives, numbers, The family and physical description Week 6: Present: regular verbs Week 7: Reflexive verbs and difference hay y estar EXAM Nº 1: Nov colloquium Week 8: Demonstratives, adverbs Week 9: Comparison of adjectives, pronominal verbs Week 10: Adverb and direct Object Pronouns FINAL EXAM: Dec. 21

ORTHOGRAPHY GRAMMAR VOCABULARY - Alphabet, letters and pronunciation. -Uses of h, s/c/z/x, r/rr, g/j, b/v, m/n y ll/y. -Practice of writing and phrasal pronunciation. -Accent (tildación) of words (agudas, graves and esdrújulas). -Accent of determinatives and interrogatives pronouns. -Genders in Spanish -Adjectives: genre, number and grades. -Adjective and comparison. -Article: gender, number, use of the articles. pronominal verbs -Determinative article. - Determinatives, demonstratives and possessives. -Determinative indefinite and numerical: type, gender and number. -Countries, nationalities and languages. -Salutations and presentations. -Professions. Asking for directions -Days of the week and months. -Day division and salutations. Make judgments. -The family and physical aspects -Colors.

ORTHOGRAPHY GRAMMAR VOCABULARY - The formes porque, porqué and por qué. -The formes hay, ay and ahí. -Personal pronoun: number and person. -Conjugate in present of indicative of modal verbs: amar, tener y vivir. -Conjugation in present of indicative: ser y estar. -The determinatives, ordinal and cardinals numbers from 0 to Mathematical exercise. -Respect expressions. -Agreements and disagreements expressions. -Information on time/quantities and climate. -Means of transportation.
