1 JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE K. Giritharan SM 09 MAT 108 COLLEGE ALGEBRA 3 cr. (3-0) (On-line) COURSE DESCRIPTION: MAT 108 is a general education mathematics course; however, it cannot be taken as the only mathematics course for the A. A. degree. College Algebra gives in-depth study of graphs of equations, functions, transformations, polynomial, rational and functions and partial fraction decomposition. Exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations and inequalities, matrices, and determinants are also covered. College Algebra requires a thorough understanding of Intermediate Algebra. The Texas Instruments TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator or a graphing calculator approved by the instructor is required. PREREQUISITES: MAT 061 and MAT 062 both with a grade of C or higher or assessment. If you have not successfully completed the equivalent of these prerequisites, then you should not take this course. Since this online course is the equivalent of the on campus sections of MAT 108 (it is not a watered down version), you must have the proper prerequisite to expect to successfully complete this course. If you are unsure of your readiness for this course, you need to contact me immediately. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Graph elementary equations using properties such as intercepts and symmetry 2. Develop a mathematical model that describes real world phenomena 3. Define domains, range, relation, and function and give examples of each 4. Graph polynomial and rational functions 5. Perform arithmetic with functions, composition of functions, transformations of functions, and find inverses of functions 6. Perform long division and synthetic division of polynomials 7. Determine the zeros of polynomial functions 8. Utilize the properties of logarithms and solve exponential and logarithmic equations 9. Demonstrate the ability to graph and apply natural logarithmic and exponential functions to workplace situations 10. Use the matrix method of row reduction to solve a system of linear equations 11. Perform matrix operations 12. Apply matrices and determinants to real-life situations

3 3 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: A. Required Materials. The textbook, three ring binder, along with the usual notebook, paper, pencils, etc., represents the required materials for the class. Calculators will be allowed on tests. Graphing calculator will not be allowed on Ch. 4 test. B. Attendance. I will monitor attendance by your participation in assignments. If I feel you are not active in the course, you will be warned to correct the problem. If you do not heed the warning, you will be encouraged to drop the class. C. Academic Dishonesty: Definition. It is expected that all submitted assignments are the submitter s original, independent work. Following is a list of situations that will be classified as academic dishonesty. a. Submitting any part of someone else s homework as your own. b. Allowing someone to submit any part of your homework as his or her own. c. Posing as someone else for , or discussion board postings. d. Getting help from someone else to answer on-line assignments. e. Using notes of any kind (cheat sheets, text typed in as a program in a calculator, writing on clothing or body parts) on written exams. f. Looking at anyone s written exam during the exam. g. Allowing someone to look at your written exam during the exam. Consequences. Penalties for violating this policy on academic dishonesty may range from a zero on the assignment to an E for the course. The violation will be documented and kept on file in the department. I will be obliged to report the incident to the vice-president for administration in accordance with Article IV, Section 2 found in Rights & Responsibilities A Student Code of Conduct. The college may then take additional action such as expulsion, suspension, probation, or reprimand by the vice-president for administration. D. Class Conduct. In general, if you follow the Golden Rule (treat others as you would like to be treated), you will not be confronted about inappropriate conduct. Keep in mind that the following applies to in class behavior as well as behavior online including , and discussion board postings. Unacceptable behavior or conduct including (but not limited to) racist, sexist or derogatory remarks, foul language, inflammatory comments, condescending or rude remarks, flaming, or display of pornographic material will result in disciplinary action which may range from an E in the class to expulsion from the college. All incidents will be documented and kept on file in the department. Keep in mind that all , and discussion board postings are viewable by me.

Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. METHODS OF EVALUATION: A. Online assignments The specific online assignments will be individually described in Assignments, with the first one occurring during the first week of class. B. Exams There will be three exams which must be taken at John A. Logan College Learning Lab or at an approved testing center. If you cannot take the exam at John A. Logan College Learning Lab, contact me immediately to make arrangements for a testing site. You must take a photo ID to the Learning Lab/testing center.
