Pearson, Prentice Hall, (The Mosaicos text package comes with My Spanish Lab, an online Program containing audio and video materials, review exercises, and online exercises.) COURSE GOALS The primary goals of S112 are: 1) To help students understand the Spanish culture as expressed and realized through the Spanish language. 2) To give students a fundamental knowledge of the four basic skills of Spanish: reading, speaking, understanding and writing. At the end of the semester, students should be able to communicate effectively in Spanish, that is, to converse with others, to express ideas in writing, and to read and understand short selections. Students should also be able to demonstrate some understanding of Hispanic culture and to be aware of its diversity. The assignments in the textbook, the corresponding in-class activities, lab work outside the classroom, and the online exercises are designed to help the student achieve these goals. Student achievement will be measured by the instructor s evaluation of oral performance and participation in class as well as laboratory work, online exercises, oral exams, quizzes, and exams. COURSE INFORMATION This course is the result of careful planning on the part of the Spanish faculty at IPFW as they applied the latest in proven methodologies for language instruction. Special attention has been given to selecting materials of instruction and creating learning situations, which are conducive to the acquisition of Spanish in as natural and relaxed a manner as possible. You are invited to avail yourself of the many resources offered by the course. A. Human resources: Your class instructor is an important resource person but remember that you as an individual are an important resource person to yourself as well as to your companions in the dynamics of the learning situation. B. Laboratory work: You have the chance to practice Spanish and learn about the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. You are expected to view television or movies in Spanish, listen to music in Spanish, read the newspaper in Spanish, or other activities that immerse you in the Spanish language and culture as approved by your instructor for one hour per week. Please be sure to have any lab time activities approved by your instructor before completing them. All television, movies, and music must be originally produced in Spanish and not English programming dubbed into Spanish. Your lab time may be completed at home or in the Language Lab. Doing the required online homework does not count as lab time. The Language Lab (LA 258) is open and available for your use during regularly posted building hours. The Language lab has many different resources that can help you practice your Spanish (for a list of those resources go to the following web page: Each week

2 you will turn in a short description of how you spent your lab time written in Spanish. Your lab report may be marked for grammar and spelling but the grade will be based on how the time was spent and whether the activity meets with the requirements of the assignment. For a four credit hour course, students are expected to spend 8 hours per week preparing outside of the classroom. You are required to spend at least 1 of those hours each week for lab time. This lab work represents 10% of the final grade. C. Oral exam: There will be 1 oral exam at the end of the semester. This oral exam will be based on the vocabulary, grammar and oral skills that you have learned in class. It will be done with classmates in groups of two or three. The date and time of the oral exam and all other exams is listed in this syllabus. There will be no make-up for the oral exam. D. TEXTBOOK: Your textbook provides practice in all four basic skills understanding, speaking, reading, writing and every effort is made to give students opportunities for self-expression within concrete situations. The text also presents a rich mosaic of contemporary life in Spain and Spanish-speaking areas of the Americas. E. ONLINE WORKBOOK / My Spanish Lab: The online exercises are designed to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary introduced in the textbook and provide listening practice to improve your listening comprehension. They are required components of the course and it's important that you complete them as specified by your instructor. No late work will be accepted. Your instructor will provide you with instructions for signing up for and using My Spanish Lab. CLASS ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION Regular class attendance is required for this course. The current IPFW BULLETIN clearly explains the University s attendance policy. Since practice in speaking and listening is dependent on interacting with your instructor and the other students in the class, a significant portion of the final grade (20%) is determined by your attendance and participation in class. Absences to class will seriously affect your grade. Normally more than 2 absences will lower the attendance part of your grade. If you miss class or do not participate you will not get the full 20%. Arriving late to class or leaving early will also affect your participation and attendance grade as well as your performance in class and on assignments, quizzes, and exams. Part of class attendance is ACTIVE participation in class. Participation is willingly and respectfully speaking Spanish in class and engaging in all activities. Students who repeatedly speak English, refuse to participate, or do not pay attention will lose participation and attendance points. An A is given for active participation in class every day, which includes being ready to ask questions or make comments on the work for that day and participating in all tasks assigned in class, including group-work, in the target language. Class attendance is especially important for acquiring a foreign language because language acquisition is a cumulative process. The more you are exposed to the material and the more opportunities you have to hear and use the language, the easier it will be for you to gain a command of Spanish. Do not fall behind in your daily work. It is impossible to cram for a foreign language examination. If you find you must be absent from a class, let your instructor know in advance, if possible. No absence will be excused without official written documentation. Prepare yourself to return to class by completing, on your own and in the language laboratory, any assignments you have missed from the text and the workbook. Students are responsible for notifying the instructor of excused absences and providing the necessary documentation. Students must discuss any additional make-up work for excused absences with the instructor. The requirements for that make-up work are at the discretion of the instructor. During class meetings, electronic devices are allowed only to accomplish educational objectives set and directed by the instructor. Your instructor will clarify the role that technology will play in your course, and specifically, during class meetings. Please be respectful of your instructor s expectations in this area.

3 No texting or social networking is permitted in class. Students who use electronic devices for purposes other than those specifically approved by the instructor during class will lose their participation points for the day. If a student has a valid reason for receiving texts or phone calls during class they must inform the instructor. Keys for Success. You are the owner of your education. You are responsible for it now and for the rest of your life. I want to help you achieve as much as you choose to achieve this semester. I hope that you achieve and receive great personal satisfaction from your learning. However, you will not be pushed, prodded, shamed, tricked, cajoled, or otherwise manipulated into working and learning. I hope that you will learn for the personal satisfaction of learning- NOT for a grade and not to please me or anyone else. You should do this for you. The key to being a successful student is active learning, and one component of active learning is using successful study strategies. This website contains valuable tips on how to be a successful student e.g., preparing, learning, studying, class participation, learning with others, project management, reading skills, preparing for tests, taking tests, writing basics, writing types, and much more. Tutoring. Academic support is offered through tutoring. Tutoring is another strategy in active learning because it allows students to interact with another peer who has been successful in the chosen course. Tutoring is done at The Spot in Kettler G21. Appointments can be made by using Students can have two hours per week per class; it s free and partially funded by the IPFW Student Government. Study Groups. You are encouraged to form study groups with other students enrolled in this course. Many successful students report that the discussions that take place in these groups are valuable in helping them to identify and reinforce important course material. Students also say that group participation helps them to better understand the material through practice and comparing the differing cognitive approaches. The groups can also be valuable sources of social and emotional support. Disabilities. I want to do everything that I can to help everyone who wants to succeed in this course. 4 STUDY METHODS It is our desire that you as a student feel secure in your approaches to studying Spanish and are using efficient and productive methods. Therefore, in order to facilitate your learning of Spanish we suggest the following study practices: 1. In general, use the language as often as possible and in as many ways as possible both in the classroom and out. 2. Be as active as possible in class. Respond as often as possible. When you are not being called on, answer to yourself, moving your lips so that you are not only practicing mentally, but also are using your muscles to develop new speech habits. 3. Use as many senses as possible in learning. Make the learning situation a total physical response on your part. Even listening and reading are active skills. In an active way, listen to the material, act out the material, use your imagination and try to associate the new word or concept with the real world around you, and write out new material so that your eyes, hand and arm are involved in a total learning situation. 4. Use your imagination as much as possible creating situations where you are actually communicating with the language. Also imagine the objects and contexts that words and sentences refer to. 5. Practice using the language with native speakers or fellow students in class, even if it is only a matter of greeting someone, or asking someone to pass the salt in the cafeteria. 6. Drill yourself as often as possible, doing the same thing that your teacher is doing in class. For example, ask yourself questions and answer them. 7. Study aloud, or if this is not possible, at least move your lips. 8. Distribute the amount of material you study and length of time that you study. It is much better to study in three twenty-minute intervals than to study for one hour straight. You will learn faster and better. 9. You will find that flash cards have great potential beyond just memorizing vocabulary terms. The use of flash cards is an efficient method for most people to learn phrases, special expressions, and verb forms. In this way, you can carry a few cards with you, and at opportune moments waiting for a bus or ride, walking between buildings, killing time between classes you can quickly learn or review some material. 10. Do not cram. We all know people who study for Spanish exams as they do for other courses: cramming the night before. It is much better to study every day and merely review the material before the exam. Maintain a positive attitude and do not fall behind. 11. If you think you are having difficulties do not wait until the last moment to solicit help from your teacher. 12. Every now and then review the material that you have learned. This will keep things fresh in your mind. 13. Think about structures you are using so that you always understand what you are doing. 14. Set up some goal or purpose for learning the material. You will find that it will help your motivation. The stating of your goals can range from wanting to learn as much Spanish as possible to simply passing a particular test. In conclusion, if you become personally involved in the activities of the class and do not fall behind, learning a second language for communicative proficiency can be a satisfying experience and it is fun! QUIZZES AND EXAMS. There will be quizzes and exams during the semester that are clearly marked in the class syllabus and students are responsible for being aware of those dates and times. No cell phones or other electronic devices may be used during quizzes and exams. Students found using a cell phone or other electronic device during a quiz or exam will receive an automatic F on that exam or quiz.

5 POLICY FOR MAKE-UP QUIZZES. No make-up quizzes or exams will be given unless you notify your instructor or the International Language and Culture Studies Department office ( ) before the exam or quiz is to be given and only if the absence is due to serious illness or a real emergency, as determined by your instructor. You must also provide official documentation. The make-up exam must be taken at the earliest possible time mutually agreeable to the student and the instructor. COURSE GRADE AND GRADING SCALE It is the policy of the Department of International Language and Culture Studies not to give a grade of INCOMPLETE in the 100- and 200-level courses, except under extraordinary circumstances. The current IPFW BULLETIN contains the following statement: In general, a grade of INCOMPLETE will not be given in 100- and 200-level language courses. Permission to receive a grade of INCOMPLETE in these can only be obtained from the Chairperson of the Department of International Language and Culture Studies. Your grade in the course will be determined according to the following criteria: Class participation and attendance 20% Homework (online workbook) 15% Laboratory work 10% Quizzes 15% Oral exam 10% Exams 30% The scale used in all S111-S112 classes is as follows: A A A B B B C C C D D D F 59 and below
