1 Spanish IA Grade Levels 9 12 Spanish IA addresses the following: vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, reading, and writing in Spanish basic conversational skills alphabet and numbers common greetings and cognates school and classes time, days, months, seasons, and weather appearance, personality, and feelings daily activities and sports asking questions and giving positive and negative responses food and drinks, going to the supermarket, and going to a restaurant 1

2 TEACHERS' GUIDE COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Anywhere Learning System (ALS) Spanish IA course is a comprehensive, completely integrated course for grades Spanish IA is designed to help students comprehend and communicate the Spanish language as well as gain a better awareness of Spanish-speaking cultures. COURSE FEATURES: Spanish IA is presented as a semester-long high school course. All lessons contain a study guide, practice activities, and a mastery test. The Spanish IA course is divided into weekly units with four lessons in each unit. Lessons 1-3 of all units consist of a daily lesson and a practice and mastery test for student learning. of each unit contains a review of material learned in that unit, an interactive game, and the unit test. Interactive games (Juegos) include crossword puzzles, word searches, and more. Juegos are found in of each unit. Spanish lessons are enriched with activities that provide interactive media for students. Narration of vocabulary terms, grammatical structures, and test questions by native Spanish speakers provides students with pronunciation and syntactic mastery. The Spanish IA course provides student with access to a Spanish to English and English to Spanish dictionary as well as a complete user guide that instructs students in the usage of interactive media contained in the lessons. 2

3 TEACHERS' GUIDE COURSE OBJECTIVES: The content and concepts in this course are, in part, based on the National Standards in Foreign Language Education developed in cooperation with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Spanish IA focuses on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, reading, and writing of the Spanish language. Lessons examine a variety of topics and teach basic conversational skills applicable in the classroom and daily use. Students are encouraged to grow beyond drill and practice into meaningful interaction with the Spanish language. Students will review and practice the speaking and spelling of Spanish words and develop a basic understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures. 3

4 TEACHERS' GUIDE COURSE CONTENT: The lessons in Spanish IA are divided into units of study. These units guide students through the process of learning and mastering the fundamentals of Spanish. 5 Unit 1: Bienvenidos! Learn the Spanish alphabet, the Spanish numerals 0 through 30, and some common greetings. Learn about Spanish cognates and the rules for determining their English equivalents. Welcome! Learn useful expressions to ask and answer questions. Practice using the Spanish alphabet, Spanish numerals 0 through 30, common greetings, and cognates. Juego: Determine Missing Numbers and Letters Unit 2: En Clase Learn the vocabulary for many school supplies and the definite and indefinite articles: el, la, un, and una. In Class Learn more vocabulary for items associated with the classroom as well as how to form plural nouns and articles. Learn about the verb hay and use it to tell what is in the classroom. Learn vocabulary related to people and places in the school. Learn the Spanish numerals 31 through 100 and how to apply the expression Cuántos? Practice using the verb hay and the Spanish numerals 1 through 100. Review vocabulary terms related to school supplies and practice identifying the correct definite and indefinite articles. Juego: Fill in Chart - Plural and Singular Nouns 5

6 Unit 3: Saludos y Despedidas Learn additional Spanish greetings and determine which greetings are appropriate for formal and informal situations. Learn about the verb llamarse, which is used to state one's name or ask someone's name. Hellos and Goodbyes Learn how to ask others where they are from and how to answer when asked where you are from. Learn the names of Spanish-speaking countries and the nationalities associated with them. Learn how to formally and informally address people you interact with daily. Practice identifying where people are from and their nationalities. Practice using the verb llamarse. Unit 4: Las Clases Discuss class schedule, learn names of classes, and use the verb tener to tell what classes you and other people have. Chart Order Fill in Chart Juego: Decoding Puzzle - Nationalities Classes Learn the days of the week. Use the verb ir to tell about places you go. Learn to express the frequency of activities and use no to negate a sentence. 6

7 Practice identifying days of the week and class names. Practice expressing frequency of activities. Use the various forms of the verbs tener and ir correctly in sentences. Unit 5: La Hora Juego: Riddles - Classes and Days of the Week Use knowledge of the numbers 1 through 29 and the verb ser to talk about what activities you perform and when they take place. Learn new phrases to express time and to ask others what time events occur. Time Use additional time-related phrases to be more specific when talking about when certain activities take place. Learn how to look at a clock and tell what time it is. Learn vocabulary for different locations and learn how to ask and answer questions about activities and when they take place. Review vocabulary related to time and locations. Practice telling time and forming yes/no questions. Juego: Crossword Puzzle - Location and Time Unit 6: Cómo Somos The Way We Are Learn how to describe a person's appearance using different adjectives and the verb ser. Fill in Chart Learn how to describe yourself and others using adjectives related to personality and the verb ser. Learn that adjectives must agree with their subjects in gender and number. Learn additional adjectives to describe personality traits. Learn about subject pronouns and eliminating unnecessary pronouns from sentences. 7

8 Review vocabulary terms related to personality and appearance. Practice using the verb ser, identifying subject pronouns, and choosing the correct adjective form based on the subject's gender and number. Juego: Word Search - Antonyms Unit 7: Cómo Estamos Learn vocabulary that describes people's moods. Use the verb estar followed by an adjective to describe how someone feels. Learn more words and phrases that describe people's emotions and feelings. Use the verb estar to describe someone's location. The Way We Feel Discover that certain adjectives have different meanings depending on whether they follow the verb ser or estar. Learn when to use ser and when to use estar, depending on the intended meaning. Fill in Chart Review the meanings of adjectives when used with ser and estar. Practice choosing the correct form of estar and ser to complete a sentence. Juego: (2) Fill in Charts Decoding Puzzles - Emotions and Moods Unit 8: El Tiempo Learn the months of the year and the numbers 100 through Weather Learn how to express the day, month, and the year. Learn the seasons of the year and other terms related to events that occur throughout the year. 8

Review vocabulary related to the months, seasons, and weather. Practice forming dates and large numbers using the Spanish numerals. Practice using exclamatory phrases. Unit 9: Actividades Learn vocabulary for more activities that people do every day. Learn the singular endings of regular ar verbs. Learn more vocabulary for a variety of activities that people enjoy participating in. Learn the plural endings of ar verbs.
