COURSE DESCRIPTION Career Spanish for Supervisors training provides work-specific competency to the student with no prior knowledge of Spanish. This training provides survival level competency in Spanish for immediate use at work. Training addresses all level of communication needed by non-spanish speaker supervisors who may work with Spanish-speaking employees. In Career Spanish for Supervisors students will learn basic Spanish phrases and questions necessary to carry out needed communicative skills to enhance their ability to interact with Spanish- speaking employees. Also, cross-cultural issues will be addressed. PREREQUISITES None COURSE GOALS Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to use Spanish to conduct specific job related phrases. These include, but are not limited to: Students will be able to pronounce Spanish sounds Students will learn work-specific vocabulary, basic Spanish phrases and questions necessary to communicate with Spanish-speaking employees or customers. Students will learn cross-cultural issues 1

ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES I will not withdraw you for lack of attendance. It is your responsibility to complete the drop form before the appropriate date. Keep in mind that attendance is very important for successful completion of the course. MOVIE PROJECT Each student will present a project related to the Hispanic/Latin population. The instructor will provide movie titles. Students will discuss specific cultural topics from the movie. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY Student progress will be assessed orally. Tests will be individual, paired or group oral tests. Daily assessment will be based on drill, oral response, reading out loud, participation in role-playing scenarios, as well as class attendance. 4 Tests 70% Class Attendance 10% Class Participation 10% Project 10% TESTING See outline for tests dates. MAKE-UP POLICY Since all testing is done orally, missing a test will require that you come during the day and make an appointment with your instructor. Only one test may be made up during the semester, and it must be made up within one week. 2

3 STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Students are expected to fully participate in the course. The following criteria are intended to assist you in being successful in this course. a. Time Management b. Understanding the Syllabus Requirements c. Utilizing Online Components (such as Blackboard) d. Communicating with the Instructor e. Completing Course Work METHODS OF LEARNING Learners will develop basic communicative skills in Spanish via modeling, intensive drills, choral response, alpha-beta line, learning pairs and triads, Total Physical Response, role-playing, simulations and situation cards. The course contains work-specific language sections geared to prepare non- Spanish speaking supervisors and employees to use Spanish language skills to enhance their ability to interact with Spanish-speaking employees. Discussions and activities will also cover cross-cultural issues. Students will be expected to practice OUT LOUD for at least 15 minutes EACH DAY the phrases from the previous class assignments. Memorization of language is essential for the success of this course. 6 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR SPANISH 1300 CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH I 1. Students will be able to pronounce Spanish sounds well enough to be understood by a native speaker.
