1 TUFTS UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES SPANISH 001 Online course The Department of Romance Languages is committed to educating students in the corresponding languages and cultures, both at home and abroad. Students should acquire fluency in at least one Romance language and have a firm grasp of the literatures of its countries or regions, as well as an understanding of the role those literatures play and have played in the broader dialogue between cultures, arts, and societies. Professor: Marta Rosso-O Laughlin marta.rosso-olaughlin@tufts.edu AIMS The principal aim of the course is that the students achieve a satisfactory command of basic language structures. In order to achieve this goal, emphasis will be placed on acquiring oral-aural communication skills through online oral drills and activities, questions and answers, and live online group work. Reading and writing skills will also be developed as reinforcement to conversational ability. CULTURAL COMPONENT The course places great importance on familiarizing the student with the culture being studied. This is achieved through the cultural readings in the textbook, and a series of videos available in MySpanishLab. It is the student's responsibility to view these videos and answer the questions in their textbook. In addition there is a blog in which students will have to present an aspect of a Spanish speaking country of their choice. STUDENTS VIDEO RECORDINGS Students will produce one video recording in which they have to use all the Spanish language at their disposal to navigate through a situation. This video recording will count towards the final grade. LIVE ONLINE SESSIONS Since face-to-face communication is essential in learning a language, students are required to attend two live online sessions with the instructor and a TA. Students will meet in groups of 4 twice a week for 20 minutes. These sessions will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6:00-8:00pm EST. The program WebEx will be used. Students are required to download it in their computers and log in at the appointed time. You also need a webcam so participants will be able to see each other during the interaction. Attendance at all live sessions is mandatory and comprises 30% or your grade. Success in the course and the grade will be affected by absences. After one absence the final grade will be lowered. After two absences, the student will be asked to drop the course. GRAMMAR TUTORIALS The Hoy día program has grammar tutorials that cover the grammar points presented in each chapter. Students are required to watch and understand these tutorials for every grammar point. They are specified in the syllabus for every week. Spanish 1 Online Page 1

2 DAILY WORK It is important that you set aside a minimum of three hours a day to work through the material assigned in the syllabus. The Hoy día program has two components: A textbook and online resources which include the Student Activities Manual (SAM), Grammar tutorials, Pronunciation and Vocabulary practice, and Video and Audio materials. Students must complete the pages assigned in the syllabus in the textbook and then complete the exercises in the SAM before the weekly live online sessions. To learn more effectively, it is highly recommended that students complete the corresponding exercises in the SAM after studying the grammatical points and doing the practice exercises in the textbook. This is clearly indicated in the syllabus. TESTS AND QUIZZES There will be two online tests, each covering two chapters. Quizzes may be offered at the discretion of the instructor. There will also be an ORAL EXAM as well as a proctored WRITTEN FINAL EXAM. If the student lives within 100 miles from the Medford campus, you will take the proctored final exam on campus. If you live further away, you will need to arrange for you own proctor. Further information is provided on Trunk under Resources. NO MAKE-UP TESTS are given. COMPOSITIONS There will be 3 short guided compositions. Students must work on these by themselves, without help from tutors or friends. All work must be original, please refer to Honesty is... FORUMS Any questions that students may have on grammar points, vocabulary, assignments or the running of the course, you can pose it under the forums tab in Trunk. The instructor will monitor the forum and answer questions every day by noon.
