(3-0) (online) COURSE DESCRIPTION: After a brief review of grammar, punctuation, word usage, and letter formats, the principles of letter writing will be presented. Attention is given to the various types of written business correspondence, interoffice communications, employment communications, and dictation techniques. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will demonstrate the ability to: Produce business writing that is acceptable in appearance, placement, and context. Recognize and use the following basic letter types: A-plan - good news or neutral message B-plan - bad news or disappointing message C-plan - persuasive message Use the following business writing techniques: You attitude Direct beginning Buffer beginning Persuasive beginning Refusal by implication Relevant ending Attention-interest-desire/conviction-action plan for sales writing Subordination of negative materials Positive statement of negative materials Resale materials Sales promotion materials Principle of emphasis Use correct punctuation and grammar. Choose effective words in their writing. List the four elements of a buffer paragraph. List the four parts of the action ending. List the four elements of the persuasive message.

Due Dates for Exams Due by 10 p.m. on March 24 A zero will be recorded for failing to take the midterm exam by the due date. Due by 10 p.m. on May 12 A zero will be recorded for failing to take the final exam by the due date. Available throughout the semester, must be passed at 70 percent or higher to avoid an incomplete in the class. Thirty points will be given if the English Comp Exam is passed at a score of 70% or higher before March 5. Completion of all unit assignments as indicated on the Desire 2 Learn site for this class, quizzes, midterm, and a comprehensive final examination are course requirements. 4 4 All students must pass (70%) an objective-based exam covering five basic areas of language skills: 1. Capitalization and Punctuation 2. Agreement (subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent) and Correct Pronoun Case (subjective-objective) 3. Parallelism and Possessives 4. Correct Word Usage 5. Sentence Fragments and Paragraphs The grade on the English Competency Exam is not calculated in the student s final grade for the course; however, any student who does not successfully pass all parts of the exam will receive an incomplete grade (INC) for the course. An incomplete grade must be made up within one semester. This makeup will be scheduled with the instructor. If the exam is successfully completed within one semester, the course grade will be changed from an INC to whatever grade was earned in the class. Student Success Center (Room C219). Services available for students include tutoring (both scheduled one-on-one tutoring and walk-in tutoring) and Disability Support Services. Students can drop in during the hours of operation for tutoring in the Math Help Room (C219 and C223) or the Biology Help Room (C243A). To receive one-onone tutoring, students should make a request early in the semester in the Student Success Center. The Student Success Center is also the place to arrange accommodations. John A. Logan College will make reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Contact the coordinator of Disability Support Services, Room C219B, ext. 8516, for more information. The coordinator must determine eligibility and arrange appropriate academic accommodations. However, it is the student s responsibility to register in advance of a school term with Disability Support Services and to turn in a class schedule each term to ensure accommodations are arranged. Free educational workshops are also provided by the Student Success Center throughout the semester. For more information, visit the Student Success Center website at English Writing Center/Tutoring. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center in C214. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office.

5 5 Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor s , participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course. Face-to-Face Class (8 or 16 weeks) Online Class (8 week) Online Class (16 week) Student may be withdrawn from class if the student has missed four (4) consecutive class periods without prior notification to the instructor of the absences. Each assignment will also include a grading/point checklist to be used by the instructor when evaluating the writing assignments. Any assignment turned in past the due date will be penalized 10 points. Please refer to each individual assignment instruction for information on submitting the assignments. 7 7 Exams Midterm Exam 100 Final Exam 150 Exams must be completed once a student clicks on the exam in the online course site to begin. Students will be permitted 50 minutes for the midterm and 50 minutes for the final exam. If this time is exceeded, the student will be penalized 10 points. Students are not permitted to refer to their textbook or class information during the exams. Specific due dates for taking the exams are included in the assignment/quiz/exam schedule in the online course site (also included in the syllabus). If the exam is not taken on the dates indicated in this schedule, the student will receive a zero for the exam. The instructor should be contacted regarding any extenuating circumstances preventing a student from taking the exam on the specified test dates. Passing the English Competency Exam at 70 percent or above is also a requirement for this class. The score earned on this exam is not calculated into the student s point total.
