Meredith and Samuel J. Mantel, Jr. Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ISBN [ ] Our official text book is the 6 th edition but it is becoming hard to find. The 7 th edition will work as well so you may choose either edition. There are some changes in the 7 th edition but I have tried to note them in the course materials. 7 th edition ISBN [ ]. We will use MS Project 2007 during the course (you may use earlier versions at your own discretion). A trial version is provided with the textbook or you may download a free trial version from I do not recommend MS Project 2010 and currently cannot support it for the course. Text website: (password with textbook). Various additional readings will be posted to WebTycho during the semester. PROJECT MANAGEMENT SIMULATOR: Each student must enroll in the Harvard - Project Management Simulator. The student registration site is ( ). I will introduce the simulation software during the second week of the course. When you access the link, it will guide you through setting up your account and then provide a user login. The cost for this is $12.50, payable on-line directly to the software vendor. COURSE DESCRIPTION: To more effectively respond to the fast changing economic environment and market conditions, managers are increasingly utilizing the project management approach. This course will introduce students to the behavioral and technical aspects of managing projects. Challenges of planning, monitoring and controlling complex projects to achieve the desired cost, quality and performance objectives will be discussed. 2 cross-functional project teams, project integration, time management, time-cost trade-offs in project completion, procurement management and communications management. (Prerequisite: MGMT 506) LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After completing this course, students will be able to: Explain the importance of effective project management in modern organizations Demonstrate the project selection process Identify and explain the different types of project structures (functional organization, dedicated project teams and matrix organization) Demonstrate the project planning process Explain and apply PERT and CPM techniques Apply loading and leveling methods Explain and apply time-cost tradeoffs in project completion Use computerized project management tools (e.g., Microsoft Project) Implement project audits Identify multicultural and behavioral issues in project management COURSE POLICIES: 1. Communication with the Instructor since you are taking this course in an online format, you will need to make use of all the resources available to you. As such, I have a check 3 before me policy. Which means you should check 3 sources before contacting me to resolve your issues. First, check your textbook and course documentation, second check the Course Question and Answer Discussion Board Conference forum in WebTycho to see if your question has already been addressed, and third check with other students. Then contact me with your question either through the Course Question and Answer Conference forum, my direct , or Skype. I will make every effort to reply to your questions within 48 hours. 2. How Often to Check WebTycho Since the online portal used by the course is our primary communication tool, you should check it daily. I will post announcements as needed to guide the course. Additionally, I have created a Discussion Board Conference forum called General Course Questions and Answers for general questions about the course material, assignments, and software/technology. Students should post their questions there first and try to answer questions from other students so we can support each other 3. Feedback on Graded Assignments My goal is to post feedback for graded assignments within 72 hours after the due date. Feedback will be posted through the online gradebook using either the brief text comments or by attaching a rubric with notes. 4. Technical Problems Technical issues can be particularly challenging in an online or hybrid course. Addressing them quickly and early in the course is critical. You should make use of Revised 21AUG2010 Page 2

3 online software help, the Course Question and Answer Conference forum, the university technical help resources, posted course technical help documents, and your fellow students and faculty. Be patient but relentless in resolving your technical issues. These courses can be additionally complex since we are combining software from various platforms, operating systems, and manufacturers so the potential for conflicts is great. The sooner you load and test the software, the more likely that we can solve any issues before they cause you to fall behind in the course. 5. Naming Files and Submitting Assignments All assignments will be submitted through WebTycho. You may prepare Microsoft WORD (.doc or.docx format) documents or PDF files. When submitting your work, name your file using your last name followed by the assignment name (i.e. SMITH_CASE1.doc). 6. Late submission of work You may submit assignment after the due date up but they will be penalized for being late. Assignments will be penalized 5% per day late starting at midnight of the day they are due. Assignments will not be accepted more than 5 days late. GRADING: Item Points Quizzes and Assignments 120 Project Simulation 100 Project Plan Case (MS 100 Project) Case Studies (4) 100 Semester Project Quizzes and Assignments: Various graded quizzes and assignments will be required throughout the semester to ensure that materials have been properly completed. Points are identified for each item in the weekly guide document. Assignments include discussion board article discussions, homework problems, and similar graded work which will be detailed in the weekly materials. 2. Project Simulation: Students will participate individually in an online project management simulation. Each student will enroll online with the simulation host and pay them directly for use of the simulator. The simulation will be run 4 times with the student score based on a combination on their performance on the simulation and their write-up submitted for each simulation. 3. Project Plan Case: Students will work individually to gain experience with project management software tools and project management knowledge in developing a business project. A specific assignment with deliverables related to structuring a project and developing it with the help of PM software functions. 4. Case Studies: Each student is responsible for analyzing four case studies from the text, and for submitting a brief (2-3 pages) written case analysis on each case that provides an overview of the situation and directly answers the questions provided in the text. These cases will also be the topic of class discussion. Cases are to be submitted as WORD or PDF documents through Revised 21AUG2010 Page 3

4 WebTycho. Students may choose from 4 cases any of the cases listed on the course schedule. 5. Semester Project: Students will work individually to create a project proposal. An initial proposal of the project will be required for instructor approval early in the semester. The full project plan will be due near the end of the semester. Further details will be provided in the MGMT660_SemsterProject.pdf file in the Semester Project folder and due dates are posted on the course calendar. Grades University policy forbids the public display of student grades in any form including the use of the telephone to inform students of their grades. At the option of the instructor, arrangements may be made to inform students of particular course grades by personal mail only. Official grade reports are sent to each student within three weeks of the end of each semester period. Students may use MyUB to access their files for grades. Course Evaluation Student evaluations of this course play a crucial role course design and delivery. This semester, all course evaluations will be administered online during the last two weeks of the course. You will receive an with a link to the website with directions on how to access the survey. It is vitally important that you complete the survey as the results are used to modify the course and assess my teaching. 6 assured that your responses will be confidential as the results will be transmitted to the faculty after the grading period and they will not include any identifying information. Observance of Religious Holidays Since this course is being taught online and the course requirements/due dates are known in advance, it is the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor if the course calendar and expectations will conflict with any religious observances.
