PD November Important Dates Message from the Executive Director Roy Seidler REFLECTIONS ON OUR AGM Second Annual Grey Owl Award Our closing luncheon program Friday, June 5 featured the formal presentation of our 2015 Grey Owl Award for Excellence in School Business Operations. Dr. Gerald Farthing, Deputy Minister of Education and Advanced Learning made the presentation to Henry Claeys, Supervisor of Transportation Winnipeg School Division. Henry was recognized for his leadership with the development, piloting and implementation of the MyBusLink" and MyBusPass" Student Transportation Project. These innovative technologies will provide parents with increased information regarding their transported children. 2. Three Successful Innovations Our Conference this year had three successful innovations: a) Pre Conference Workshop - Wednesday Morning Traditionally the only option open for members on the opening Wednesday of our Conference was the golf scramble. This year the planning committee hosted a ½ day pre-conference workshop on the topic of Mind Mapping. The limit of twenty registrants was quickly filled and the session was a success: Topic Interest Level Presenter skills Usefulness of handouts Pre-Conference Workshop Evaluation Mind Mapping Bobbi Marshall 4.4 on 5 (Very Good to Excellent) 4.4 on 5(Very Good to Excellent) 4.3 on 5(Very Good to Excellent) Comments 1. Would you recommend hosting a pre-conference again next year? All 18 participants who responded said, Yes! 2. Six participants commented they appreciated having an alternative to golfing on the Wednesday morning. Bobbi Marshall

2 PAGE 2 b) Vendor Breakout Sessions Noon hour on Thursday The Vendor Breakout Sessions were moved from a three hour afternoon slot on the Thursday to the lunch break. This innovation was very popular with both our members and the vendors. All we have to do is figure out a way to carry our soup and spoons around more effectively! c) Round Table Discussion Groups Thursday Afternoon MASBO members love to network. So, it should come as no surprise that the Round Table Discussion Groups that were organized by function were very successful. Participants strongly recommended that this feature of the Conference be retained. 3. Keynote Speakers Tim Hague Sr. was by the far one of the most successful keynote speakers we have ever heard at our Conference. He received a presenter evaluation of 4.8 on 5! One MASBO member commented, Tim was a very emotional speaker that held my interest at every moment. Excellent choice of a speaker. He was one of the few speakers we have had that drew a standing ovation at the conclusion of his presentation. 4. Entertainment Matt Falk As one of the rising comedy stars in Canada, Matt was a big hit with our Conference audience. He too received a great evaluation rating of 4.5 on 5 and he also received a standing ovation at the end of his performance. His dialalects around the world closing skit was awesome! Other AGM Highlights New Executive Pictured to the right, outgoing President, Paul Ilchena, perfoms the ceremonial passing of the gavel to incoming President, Gaylene Schroeder-Nishimura. New appointments to the Provincial Executive are: President Elect Anita Werbowski Provincial Finance Director (Urban) Wayne Shimizu South-Interlake Region Director Abe Wiebe Provincial Maintenance Director Jake Wall

3 PAGE MASBO Provincial Executive Members In the News Retirements Bruce Fidler, Flin Flon School Division Maintenance Supervisor retired April 30. Bruce s employment with the Flin Flon School Division began on October 31 st, 1988 in the Custodial / Maintenance Department. In March, 2007, Bruce accepted the position of Maintenance Supervisor. By trade Bruce is a Journeyman Electrician, Architectural Draftsman and 5 th Class Power Engineer. In Bruce s early years with the Division he was very involved with the United Steelworkers Local 7975 and later served 6 years as the Union President. Bruce is currently serving his 4 th term as the Mayor of Creighton, SK and we know he will remain busy with these duties in retirement. In retirement, Bruce can continue to enjoy his favorite past times golfing, playing darts, shooting pool and riding his Harley. Len Dobreen, Maintenance Supervisor for the Rolling River School Division also recently announced his retirement effective June 30, 2015 Best wishes to both our colleagues for a well-deserved and happy retirement! Provincial Committee Appointment Wayne Shimizu, Secretary-Treasurer of Seven Oaks School Division accepted the MASBO Executive s request to represent MASBO on the MB Education Task Force on Special Needs Funding. Several meetings will be held before the end of the summer to make recommendation for changes to the funding model for level 2 and 3 students.

4 PAGE 4 Workshop Presenters March 19 Paul Ilchena and Marlene Michno conducted a workshop on the Role of the Secretary-Treasurer at the MSBA annual conference, March 19, in Winnipeg. New MASBO WEB Site Please check out our new MASBO WEB site, and update your personal information. Also, try out our new members forum if you have a question for your colleagues. Thanks to Carl Pedersen and his committee for their work on this project. PAL Program Graduates The MASBO Peer Assisted Leadership Program Pilot has come to a successful end. The four participants pictured below were the first to complete the program and have recommended that it be continued. The PAL program provides a leadership growth opportunity for experienced leaders who want to take their leadership skills to a new level through observation and feedback with a colleague. 5 PAGE 5 SAVE THIS DATE: NOVEMBER 25, 2015 MASBO Provincial Professional Development Day Emotional Intelligence: Expanding Influence Acting on feedback surveys from our membership, the MASBO Professional Development Committee and our MASBO Publications Committee has been exploring the topic of emotional intelligence as a professional development topic. Emotionally intelligent people are able to identify and assess their emotions and those of others and then use that information to guide their actions and influence the actions of others. While cognitive skills are important, it is emotional intelligence that has the greatest impact on people s ability to be productive and work well with others. Participants in this workshop will learn to utilize emotional intelligence more effectively through both self-assessment and skill development exercises, resulting in an increased ability to engage more effectively with others and expand their influence. MASBO will once again contract with the ACHIEVE Learning Centre to conduct this important one day training workshop. Some of the topics that will be covered: What is Emotional Intelligence?
