4 Workshop Overview INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP (Leigh Quesnel) In recent years the issue of leadership has become a central theme in the process of organizational renewal and good function. Those who succeed as senior managers will be those who can also lead. To lead effectively will require that these individuals: distinguish management from leadership understand the nature of the current organizational environment understand the role of leadership required in that environment With this in mind, we will spend time discussing each of these issues most specifically focusing on leadership as the art of intercepting entropy. This speaks to the art of driving an adaptive process when things are not functioning as they could be or should be. Inclusive Leadership is the art of intercepting entropy by changing or transforming people, organizational processes, and organizational systems so as to ensure that each of these functions optimally. Participants will discuss and discover the roles and responsibilities of leaders, the importance of leadership, the skills and competencies required to lead, and the meaningfulness of taking up the challenge of leading. Perhaps most significantly they will discover that leadership is not so much an issue of style as it is and issue of substance. Not only an issue of what they do but also of who they are! EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE LEADER'S ADVANTAGE The research and performance results speak for themselves; emotional intelligence and leadership effectiveness are undeniably and intricately connected. Those who are excelling in today s dynamic and fast-paced work environment are individuals who display confidence, flexibility, and resilience; they are individuals who can handle themselves and others effectively. In fact, in order to take full advantage of our cognitive and technical talents (and those of our team); we need to develop our emotional smarts. Learning Objectives: interpret your EQ-i Report develop self-awareness to allow you an opportunity to effectively manage your emotions identify strategies to create rapport and connect with others authentically understand how emotional intelligence will impact your ability to handle stress and overcome obstacles as you pursue your goals develop your EQ Edge by learning strategies to build trust practice empathy skills to understand, and develop your team utilize influence skills to create and enhance effective working relationships STRATEGIC THINKING (André DeBellefeuille) Besides the personal satisfaction of taking charge of the organization s future, Strategic Thinking offers four compelling reasons for its use: 1. looks into the future and provides an opportunity to influence it in a proactive posture 2. provides an awareness of the environmental needs and issues 3. helps define the overall mission of the organization and focuses on the objectives 4. provides a sense of direction, continuity and leadership Learning Objectives: understand what strategic thinking is and why it's valuable view strategic thinking as a process recognize the personal traits, behaviours and attitudes, and cognitive capacities that strategic thinkers demonstrate learn how to apply Strategic Thinking to your organization, division, department develop your ability to think strategically

6 Five Development Workshops (Further details to be provided) Strategic Planning (January 10 & 11, day workshop) CAMIQ uses a Strategic Development Model made up of three phases. Strategic planning, the second phase, is a tool for organizing the present and for looking into and planning for the future. Simply put, the strategic plan is a road map to lead an organization from where it is now to where it would like to be in the next year, five or ten years, how it s going to get there and how it will know if it got there or not. The workshop is intended to prepare you to think strategically and build knowledge to develop and implement effective strategies. Living and Leading Change Management (February 14 16, day workshop) Living and Leading Change Management is a comprehensive change leadership program that teaches you simple and effective strategies to help you get better results from change with less discomfort and resistance. Learn how to make more effective use of time and resources when leading change. Most importantly, see how a simple shift in the way you think about change management can give you better results today and actually build your organization s capacity for change. You will learn how to recognize your own responses to change and identify where you and others are on the change continuum. More importantly, you will learn what to DO with that insight and be able to apply that knowledge to get better results from any change. Influencer - The Power to Change Anything (April 3 & 4, day workshop) Based on the New York Times best selling book Influencer The Power to Change Anything, this interactive presentation will introduce participants to an award-winning methodology that provides proven strategies for successfully uprooting entrenched habits, driving sustained improvement, and executing change initiatives. The 2-day Influencer workshop uses a combination of instructor-led training, compelling videos, extensive in-class practice, small and large group dialogue, and personal planning to help participants learn skills and develop strategies for resolving tough issues. Building Proposals to Influence in Writing (October 23 & 24, day workshop) The business case is a tool that supports decision-making and projects the financial and business consequences of a specific business initiative or project. Thoroughly researched and clearly communicated business cases provide higher quality information resulting in better management and project decisions. You will leave this workshop with a much better template for building and communicating business cases, along with a step-by-step plan for implementation. Risk Management (October 25, day workshop) Overview of Workshop Awareness of risk has grown dramatically over the last 10 years. In the Government of Manitoba it is becoming an organizational concern. Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation now views risk as an opportunity, something to be managed and optimized, not just something to eliminate or neutralize by avoiding activities or lines of business. This Enterprise Risk Management session is intended to integrate risk solutions into all aspects of business practice and decision making processes.
7 Team Project (December/January 2011/12) What are the Team Projects? MIT Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP) participants are required to complete a team project. Projects are selected based on their contribution towards the department s strategic plan, business goals and the long-term efforts of the department. Each project will be sponsored by an Executive Management Committee member(s) and the Transformation & Innovation Office. An overview of each project will be provided to the project teams and a SharePoint link will be established to allow for collaboration of information. Project teams will be determined based on participant s interests, geographic location and division as well as the opportunity to build cross department relationships and allow for networking. How many participants work in a team? Participants generally work in teams of four people; however, this will be determined at the time when projects are assigned in December/January When do teams work on their projects? How much time do they give to the projects? The teams work on their projects outside of their regularly scheduled program sessions and may choose to meet about once a month to discuss project details. While every team varies in the amount of time that it devotes on the project, generally speaking it is fair to expect teams to meet as required to provide regular updates and work on their project content. Should the projects require strategic thinking? YES!!! Projects should use participants strategic thinking, leadership capacities and exercise the skills and competencies taught in the program. What are the presentation details? Project teams will present their projects at the January 2013 Ensuring Excellence Alignment Meeting (TBD) as all projects will be related to current initiatives being worked on by the department. Present at the meeting will be your supervisors, Extended Management Team and the Executive Management Committee.
