1 New Zealand Develpment Schlarships - Africa Infrmatin fr students cmmencing study in 2017 The New Zealand Gvernment prvides New Zealand Develpment Schlarships (NZDS) t targeted cuntries in Africa with the pprtunity t undertake studies at tertiary educatin institutins in New Zealand. The Schlarships scheme is a central part f the New Zealand Gvernment s develpment assistance t Africa and aims t strengthen sustainable ecnmic develpment in Africa by cntributing t human resurce develpment, particularly in Agriculture and Renewable Energy. New Zealand schlarships target applicants frm develping cuntries wh are mtivated t make a difference at hme. Preferences Preference will be given t candidates wh demnstrate strng academic ability, leadership qualities, and a cmmitment t the develpment f their hme cuntry. Preference is als given t candidates wh are 39 years f age r yunger at the time f cmmencing their schlarship. Preference will be given t candidates wh apply t study in academic disciplines relating t ne r mre f the fllwing: Agriculture Develpment Agri-business management, agricultural ecnmics, agricultural systems and management, rural develpment, dmestic supply chains and distributin, Natural Resurce and Envirnmental Management Bilgy, vegetable prductin, livestck/animal husbandry, crp management, sericulture (silk prductin), frestry, fisheries, aquaculture, agricultural pest management Phytsanitary, bi-security, bitechnlgy, agricultural trade, Fd prductin, fd sciences/technlgy, pst-harvest prcessing, fd strage and packaging, fd safety Renewable Energy Gethermal, slar, hydr engineering and wind energy, renewable energy distributin systems Eligible cuntries Applicatins fr New Zealand Develpment Schlarships are welcme frm the fllwing cuntries: Algeria, Angla, Btswana, Camern, Djibuti, Egypt, Ethipia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesth, Malawi, Mauritius, Mrcc, Mzambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Lene, Suth Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

2 Page 2 f 5 Type and level f schlarships NZDS are awarded fr full-time, pstgraduate level study (i.e. Pstgraduate Certificates, Diplmas and Masters degrees) in New Zealand. The types f curse include: Pstgraduate Certificate (6 mnths) Pstgraduate Diplma (1 year) e.g. Agricultural Science, Water Resurce Management, and Gethermal studies, and Masters Degree (1 2 years) e.g. Agri-Cmmerce, Resurce Management, and Gethermal Energy PhD (up t 3.5 years) Eligibility criteria Applicants fr the schlarships must meet the generic eligibility criteria befre their applicatin will be cnsidered against the selectin criteria, including any criteria specific t Africa. The Schlarships are directed t public sectr, private sectr and civil sciety (including NGO) candidates wh independently apply fr a schlarship, and wh meet the eligibility and selectin criteria utlined belw. Preference will be given t applicants frm disadvantaged cmmunities. Applicants must: be a citizen f Algeria, Angla, Btswana, Camern, Djibuti, Egypt, Ethipia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesth, Malawi, Mauritius, Mrcc, Mzambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Lene, Suth Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. (i.e. permanent residents f these cuntries are nt eligible t apply). Be a citizen f the cuntry frm which yu are applying fr a schlarship. Have resided in yur hme cuntry fr at least tw years immediately prir t cmmencing yur schlarship. (unless yu are a member f the diplmatic crps r a dependent f a member f the diplmatic crps) Nt be serving military persnnel. Be able t satisfy Immigratin requirements fr internatinal student entry t New Zealand r the cuntry in which yu will undertake yur schlarship (i.e. medical checks, plice clearances/character checks, etc.) Be able t meet the academic entry requirements (including English language ability) t get int yur preferred prgramme f study Nt have been previusly terminated frm a New Zealand Gvernment Schlarship Seek a qualificatin that will cntribute t the sustainable develpment f yur hme cuntry Cmmit t return t yur cuntry fr a minimum f 2 years at the end f yur schlarship t cntribute t yur cuntry s develpment. Nt have citizenship r permanent residence status f New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, Eurpean Unin cuntries, United Kingdm, Japan, Israel, Suth Krea, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia. Have at least 2 years f wrk experience (part time r fulltime, paid r vluntary).

3 Page 3 f 5 English language requirement New Zealand tertiary educatin institutins set their wn admissin requirements fr English language prficiency. IELTS is the Internatinal English Language Testing System. TOEFL is the Test f English as a Freign Language. These are the tw tests we use fr assessing schlarship applicants. As a general rule, fr thse wishing t cmplete a pstgraduate qualificatin an verall IELTS scre f 6.5 and n band less than 6.0 is the minimum required. Similarly, a TOEFL scre f 90 n the internet-based test is required fr pst graduate study. If yu are shrtlisted fr a schlarship, yu will be asked at that stage t sit the apprpriate English language test. Hwever, if yu already have IELTS r TOEFL test scres which are n mre than tw years ld yu can enter them n yur applicatin. Yu will nt be disadvantaged if yu have nt sat the test when yu apply. If yu have previusly cmpleted tertiary educatin in English yu can prvide an fficial statement frm the educatin prvider that English is the language f instructin. Please nte, each institutin sets their wn English language requirements. Please check with yur preferred institutin abut their requirements fr admissin t their institutin as they may require additinal dcumentatin. What the schlarship ffers New Zealand has first-rate educatin institutins that ffer wrld-recgnised qualificatins. Successful applicants will have access t excellent academic knwledge in quality facilities. The schlarships include financial supprt fr tuitin, living csts while in New Zealand, medical and travel insurance and airfares. The partners f students are eligible fr a wrk visa that allws them t live and wrk in New Zealand fr the duratin f their partner s study. Applicatin prcess Yu d nt require an ffer f place at yur selected institutin befre yu apply. If yu are shrtlisted fr a schlarship, we will seek a place at the institutin yu have requested in yur applicatin, n yur behalf. PAPER applicatins deadline - 15 April Request a New Zealand Develpment Schlarship applicatin frm frm the nearest New Zealand High Cmmissin r Embassy in yur cuntry r regin. 2. Cmplete the New Zealand Tertiary Schlarships applicatin frm fr the New Zealand Develpment Schlarship in English. 3. Dcumentatin required a. Whichever is prvided it must have been cmpleted in the last 24 mnths 4. Submit yur applicatin t yur nearest New Zealand High Cmmissin r Embassy s that it arrives by the final clsing date f 15 April Als at the shrtlist stage, yu will be required t undertake aptitude testing. Yu will be ntified if yu will be undertaking aptitude testing. ONLINE applicatins deadline - 30 April Lg nt: 2. Create a RealMe lgin t enable yu t apply. Yu will use this lgin any time that yu want t access yur nline Schlarship applicatin, and can als use the same lgin fr a range f ther New Zealand Gvernment services, including applying fr a Student Visa thrugh Immigratin NZ if yu are successful in being awarded a Schlarship. Yu will need yur reference number in rder t start yur applicatin frm s please make a nte f it at the end f yur eligibility checklist. 3. Register with New Zealand Schlarships Online. A link will be prvided frm 1 February 2016 where yu can lgin, r create a lgin if yu dn't already have ne. The first time that yu lgin yu will als need t register with New Zealand Schlarships nline. This means that yu will be ntified via when the applicatin rund pens. Yu will als be ntified when the applicatin rund is abut t clse. T d this yu will need t prvide us with a few basic details such as yur name and address. This is als where yu will need t prvide the eligibility reference number frm step ne abve. Yu will be taken directly t the Schlarships registratin page nce yu have created yur RealMe lgin. 4. Cmplete yur applicatin. Once yu have lgged in and registered, yu will be able t apply fr any pen Schlarship intake in yur cuntry. In 2016 tertiary schlarships will be pen frm 1 February. If an intake is nt currently pen fr applicatins, yu can pre-register and receive an alert when applicatins pen Yu can als update yur cntact details at any time shuld they change, which will help us t get in tuch with yu regarding yur applicatin(s) if needed. Please nte that yu will need t scan yur academic transcript int ne single dcument and uplad it nt the applicatin prtal. The shrtlist will be cnfirmed several mnths after the applicatin deadline has been reached. 5. Dcumentatin. If yu are successful in reaching the shrtlist, yu will be required t prvide the fllwing fficial dcumentatin: a. 5 Page 5 f 5 Selectin Prcess Applicatins will be reviewed by the New Zealand Gvernment and assessed fr admissin t the institutin yu have selected. Shrt listed candidates may be required t undertake aptitude testing and underg a telephne interview. Yu will be ntified if yu will be undertaking aptitude testing. All candidates will be infrmed f the utcme f their applicatin by Octber Additinal Infrmatin Female applicants are strngly encuraged t apply as the New Zealand Gvernment attempts t ensure gender equity amng schlarship hlders. Schlarships must be taken in the year fr which they are ffered and cannt be transferred t the next academic year. If ffered a New Zealand Aid Prgramme schlarship, travel t New Zealand is subject t a visa being issued by Immigratin New Zealand. Candidates may be required t prvide additinal infrmatin t assist with immigratin requirements. Successful candidates shuld allw at least tw mnths fr their student visa applicatin t be prcessed. The schlarship will cver travel t and frm the schlar s hme cuntry at the start, during and end f yur schlarship, medical and travel insurance, full tuitin fees, an establishment allwance, and a living allwance t cver day t day csts in New Zealand. Applicants may als be entitled t additinal supprt fr a thesis. New Zealand Aid Prgramme schlarship awardees may wrk fr up t 20 hurs in any given week during the academic year and any hlidays within the academic year and full-time during the Christmas-New Year hliday perid. The New Zealand Aid Prgramme des nt prvide funding fr dependants. Hwever, eligible partners f awardees are nw able t apply fr pen wrk visas withut an ffer f emplyment r written apprval frm the Ministry f Freign Affairs and Trade. Applicants must nt have applied fr New Zealand r Australian permanent residency. Applicants must nt seek r apply fr permanent residency r a wrk permit fr New Zealand, Australia r any ther cuntry while n schlarship. Nte: The New Zealand Aid Prgramme has the right t make a final decisin n the ffering f New Zealand Aid Prgramme s schlarships.
