1 2.0 USING THE GEOSPATIAL SOFTWARE AND ACCESSING LAB DATA Once pened, the gespatial sftware prgram will appear as if it is running frm yur desktp, hwever it is actually perating thrugh the UTM server and yu will need t learn hw t access the lab data thrugh this netwrk. Each assignment will cme with files that yu need t cmplete the exercise. Fllw the instructins belw t lcate the lab data. Separate detailed instructins will be prvided fr each individual lab assignment. NOTE: Only pen ne gespatial/remte sensing sftware at a time. Opening mre than ne prgram can decrease its peratin speed fr yurself as well as thers. If yu are using ArcGIS, yu will need t wait three minutes after clsing the windw t pen the sftware again. 2.1 Cpying Data Befre beginning the assignment, yu will need t cpy the data frm the UTM server t yur wn flder hsted n the netwrk. Lgin t xenweb.utm.utrnt.ca and click n File Explrer

2 Enter \\medusa in the address bar and the Curses and StudentWrk flders will appear Yu will need t cpy the lab data frm the Curses flder t yur UTORid flder inside the StudentWrk flder The easiest way t d this is t have tw file explrer windws pen (click n the File Explrer icn again t pen anther windw) Duble click n Curses and select yur curse flder and the lab flder crrespnding t yur lab assignment (e.g., GGR375 > Exercise 1)

3 In the ther File Explrer windw, duble click n StudentWrk and pen the flder named with yur UTORid Under the Curses flder, highlight all the data frm the assignment flder, right click and select Cpy Mve t yur UTORid flder in the StudentWrk flder, right click n an empty space and select Paste Duble check that all the files have been cpied ver 2.2 Using Sftware Prgrams thrugh the Platfrm While the prgrams may appear as if they are running frm yur desktp, they are actually perating thrugh the nline platfrm (i.e. thrugh yur brwser). Occasinally, yu may experience a lag in the refresh time which is nrmal. Ensure yu give yurself enugh time t cmplete the assignments and remember t save yur wrk regularly. ERDAS Imagine 2013 Frm the main Applicatins flder select: T access the lab data yu just cpied int yur UTORid flder frm within ERDAS, use the universal path: \\medusa\studentwrk\(utorid). Yu will need t set this as a default directry in ERDAS Select File > Preferences

4 Under Default Data Directry and Default Output Directry input the universal path prvided abve, using yur wn UTORid Click Save and then Clse Next select File > Open, and it shuld autmatically direct yu t the default directry yu just set ArcMap 10.2 Frm the main Applicatins flder select: Select the Add Data buttn In the windw that appears, select the Flder Cnnectins buttn Type in the universal path (\\medusa\studentwrk and click OK The Add Data windw shuld nw pen t yur UTORid flder Select the apprpriate flder f the lab cntents yu just cpied and fllw yur lab assignment instructins The lcatin shuld nw appear in the drp dwn menu under Flder Cnnectins This lcatin will be remembered fr subsequent ArcMap sessins

5 2.3 Uplading Dcuments t Blackbard Using the internet explrer applicatin at xenweb.utm.utrnt.ca yu can uplad dcuments directly frm yur student wrk flder n medusa (\\medusa\student Wrk\UTORid) t Blackbard. Clicking n the internet explrer icn at xenweb.utm.utrnt.ca will launch the applicatin windw.

6 If yu g t the Blackbard hme page yu may see the fllwing errr stating that brwser ckies are disabled. T fix the ckies errr, click the gear in the upper right crner f internet explrer, click n internet ptins and g t the privacy tab. Adjust the slider s that it says Medium High.

7 Once this is dne yu will be able t perate and access Blackbard nrmally. Once yu have navigated t the submissin page fr the assignment, click n Brwse My Cmputer. This will pen the Chse File t Uplad screen. Frm here enter in \\medusa t navigate t the medusa screen where yu can access yur student wrk flder and select files t uplad.

8 2.4 Sme Imprtant Pints At the end f every sessin, please return t xenweb.utm.utrnt.ca and lg ff Fr every new nline sessin that yu want t initiate, yu will need t g xenweb.utm.utrnt.ca and lg in each time (and lg ff nce finished) When yu are wrking remtely, and lgged in, the Citrix Receiver will autmatically terminate yur sessin after a prlnged perid f inactivity this is t help maintain the speed f the cnnectin fr active users. Therefre: Always lg ff when taking breaks and as sn as yu have finished yur wrk Save yur wrk regularly
