4 Intrductin Welcme t Hpe Gspel Missin s Vlunteer Team. Vlunteers have always played an imprtant and valuable rle in ur ministry t the hmeless f Western Wiscnsin. Residents, staff and the cmmunity benefit frm the wrk f individuals like yu wh freely share their talents, time and resurces. We als knw that as a vlunteer yu t will be rewarded. This handbk is directed t vlunteers wh are willing t devte a prtin f their time t ne f the mst imprtant rganizatins in Western Wiscnsin Hpe Gspel Missin. We want t make sure yu are an infrmed vlunteer s that yu can get the mst ut f yur vlunteer experience. 5 Our Purpse Hpe Gspel Missin is a Christ-centered rescue missin fr peple whse lives are in need f rescue and are seeking life changing help. We help them by: 1. Meeting their basic needs (fd, clthing, shelter, health care, jbs, etc.). 2. Requiring them t wrk and help supprt themselves. 3. Prviding them with a safe and rderly place t stay. 4. Making available t them the necessary training and life skills t successfully live n their wn thrugh ur Renewed Hpe Prgram. 5. Sharing with them the Gspel f Jesus Christ and encuraging thse wh want t change by using Biblical methds and principles. 6. Invlving them in lcal Bible-believing churches that will mentr them with bth care and crrectin. 7. Nt enabling them t cntinue in their destructive behavir by shwing them bth care and crrectin. 8. Nt taking any gvernment funding. Our Visin T help thse whse lives are in need f rescue with the necessary supprt and resurces whereby if willing they can becme prductive members f sciety. 5

6 Vlunteer Rights 1. T receive a jb descriptin that will help vlunteers perfrm their duties mre cnfidently and cmpetently. 2. T experience jb satisfactin and t infrm the vlunteer crdinatr if an assignment is unsatisfactry. 3. T receive initial and n-ging training as needed. 4. T ask fr a new assignment when ready fr a new challenge. 5. T feel free t cnsult the Vlunteer Crdinatr regarding suggestins r cmplaints. 6. T have a safe wrk envirnment. 7. T have a wrkplace free f harassment. 8. T be kept infrmed f new develpments in the rganizatin via newsletters, meetings and T knw t whm they are accuntable and t have clearly defined channels f cmmunicatin. Cmmitment & Cmmunicatin Whether yu are vlunteering n a regular basis r fr a ne-time prject r event, arrive early s there is time fr cmmunicatin and directin. Als, be sure t let the Hpe Staff knw when yur schedule changes r if yu cannt vlunteer when yu are expected. Fr yu t have an enjyable vlunteer experience it is crucial that the lines f cmmunicatin stay pen and clear. Vlunteers at HGM help in numerus ways; withut cmmitted, dependable vlunteers, ur ministry t the pr and hmeless wuld nt be as effective. Thank yu fr helping us help the needy f Western Wiscnsin! Yu Are Part f a Team As a member f HGM s vlunteer prgram yu are part f a team. Yur cntributins make a difference at many levels. Once yu begin vlunteering, yu becme a part a grup that supprts yu, prays with yu, and is here fr yu day after day. We als encurage ur vlunteers t invite their friends and family t vlunteer with Hpe Gspel Missin. Tgether we can all make a difference. Interests and Talents We want t make the best match we can between vlunteer pprtunities and yur interests and talents. Let the Vlunteer Crdinatr knw hw yu can best cntribute. Yur input may lead t the develpment f additinal vlunteer pprtunities. 7

8 Language Just as we expect all staff and residents t refrain frm using inapprpriate language while at HGM and its businesses we als expect the same frm vlunteers. Keep in mind that what may be a harmless slang term t yu may be ffensive t anther persn near yu, whether that be residents, ther vlunteers r staff members. What t Wear Wearing mdest, practical and cmfrtable clthing when yu vlunteer is imprtant. Dress apprpriately fr the task yu will be perfrming (i.e. N sandals in the Bargain Center r Building Hpe). Interactin With Residents 1. Please d nt lend them mney. Their needs are cvered thrugh Missin prgrams. 2. Please d nt give them rides except when authrized by a Missin directr. 3. Be careful t give advice within yur level f expertise and under guidance f staff. These requests are fr yur safety and the residents best interests. 9 Spiritual Invlvement with Residents Because f the Christian nature f the Missin, we realize that staff and vlunteers will at times be interacting with residents n a spiritual level. We als realize that staff and vlunteers may cme frm different denminatinal backgrunds and be at different levels f spiritual grwth. Therefre, in an effrt t prevent pssible cnfusin amng residents, we want t clarify what is acceptable r nt in regard t spiritual invlvement with the residents. Acceptable Unacceptable Telling a resident hw Christ changed yur life. Encuraging them t d right and bey Gd (e.g.; pray, seek the Lrd, g t church, etc.) Telling them abut the gdness f Gd. Giving them the simple Gspel f Christ. Referring them t thse in charge f the spiritual wrk at the missin when they have prblems r questins f a spiritual nature, r an interest in attending church. Giving them spiritual advice r cunsel. Trying t disciple them. Trying t evangelize them n a regular basis. Inviting r recmmending them t a church r ther spiritual functins withut permissin. Giving them bks r ther materials f a spiritual nature. Trying t cnvince them f yur wn denminatinal r dctrinal psitins. 9

10 Remember: The missin is nt a church. We have chaplains and peple frm lcal churches that are qualified t deal with the residents n a spiritual basis. Refer residents t them whenever pssible. President s Vlunteer Service Award We hnr ur vlunteers thrugh the President s Vlunteer Service Award Prgram. Any individual, family, r grup can receive Presidential recgnitin fr vlunteer hurs earned ver a 12-mnth perid. Fr 100 hurs f service yu earn the brnze award, 250 hurs yu earn the silver award and fr 500 hurs yu earn the gld award. 11 What we Prvide t Our Residents Men s Shelter: A 42-bed facility designed t prvide fd, clthing and shelter fr single, hmeless men. Medical, dental, and ptical care are available thrugh the shelter s referrals. Ruth Huse Wmen s Shelter: This 12-bed facility is designed t prvide fd, clthing and shelter fr single, hmeless wmen. Services are similar t the Men s Shelter. Bth facilities hst three prgrams: an emergency shelter, a helps prgram and the Renewed Hpe Prgram. Emergency Shelter - Designed t help the hmeless get ff the streets in emergency situatins. Residents are als evaluated fr candidacy in ther prgrams. Helps Prgram - Nt all residents need lng term help. A percentage have a plan t get back n their feet but need help t get there. Our new Helps Prgram wrks with residents t meet their gals and prevent a lng-term hmeless situatin. Renewed Hpe Prgram - The cmpnents f this prgram are designed t equip the participants with the resurces necessary t becme independent and cntributing members f sciety. 11

12 Other Infrmatin Slmn Learning Center The Learning Center perates n a quarterly calendar with bth daytime and evening curses. A special emphasis is given thse wh are nt adequately equipped fr entry level emplyment r just need a class r tw in specific areas f weakness. Funding Funding at Hpe Gspel Missin is prvided thrugh gifts frm private dnrs, churches, vlunteers, crpratins and fundatins. Prceeds frm missin businesses g directly t help fund Missin services. Hpe Gspel Missin des nt accept any gvernment funding. Businesses Prfits frm Hpe Gspel Missin businesses are used fr peratinal and prgramming expenses. These businesses are als used as jb-training pprtunities fr residents. Hpe Gspel Missin Bargain Center: With ver 33,000 square feet f display space, the Bargain Center is the largest bargain stre in the Midwest. The stre sells dnated (used) and surplus/bulk (new) gds such as furniture, clthing, appliances, electrnics and fd. Hpe Gspel Missin Aut Sales: Cars, trucks, and ther vehicles dnated t the missin are taxdeductible and sale prceeds g t help HGM s residents. 12
