1 Call for Submission RISE Emerging Artist Program 2017 Deadline: Dec. 5, 2016 Jurying process: Dec. 6 13, 2016 Notification of Acceptance: Dec. 14, 2016 Exhibition Dates for 2017 Slot 1: March 3 April 24, 2017 Installation: March 1 & 2 Opening Reception: Friday, March 3 at 6 pm Slot 2: April 28 June 19, 2017 Installation: April 26 & 27 Opening Reception: Friday, April 28 at 6 pm Slot 3: Oct. 6 Nov. 30 Installation: Oct. 4 & 5 Opening reception: Friday Oct. 6 at 6 pm RISE Emerging Artist Program: The Emerging Artist Program is an 8-week long program that allows an emerging Alberta artist the opportunity to educate, exhibit, sell, and promote their artistic practice within the Bow Valley. When accepted, the emerging artist will be paired with a local professional artist mentor who will help guide the artist with preparation and planning for the exhibition; the installation of the exhibition; and the required artist talk and/or demonstration. Eligibility: We define an emerging artist as someone who is in the early stage of their career (less than 5 years), has specialized training in his or her field (not necessarily gained in an academic institution), and who has created a modest independent body of work. Our definition of an emerging artist can include students; recently graduated students from an art college/university; or artists who have made a recent career change or decision to prioritize their art practice. The artist cannot be exhibiting work with a commercial gallery within the Bow Valley and has to be an Alberta resident. This call for submission is open to all visual art disciplines, individual and collective projects.

2 Submission Requirements: The deadline for submissions is December 5, Please submit one PDF file containing items 1-8 and 10 individual jpeg files for the images to the 1. Cover Letter This letter of introduction contains current contact information including mailing address, , and telephone number. The letter should also indicate first and second choice for exhibition slot dates. If you are applying as a collective, please provide the information of one member as the main contact. 2. Project Description The project description should indicate the media, technique, theme and/or context of the artwork and title of the proposed exhibit. It should be clear in the project description whether the exhibition is already a completed body of work or will need to be completed. It should also address any specific technical or spatial requirements regarding the installation of the work. 3. Artist Statement/ Collective Statement 250 words maximum. 4. Curriculum Vitae Maximum 2 pages. 5. Corresponding Image list Image list should provide: number corresponding to file name, title of artwork, size, medium, year, proposed value, and whether or not they are part of the exhibition. 6. Description of Artist Talk/ Demonstration A 30-minute artist talk or demonstration is a requirement when participating in the RISE Emerging Artist Program. Please provide a short description of the proposed talk. 7. Relevant Support Material/ Letter of Reference If relevant, please include a selection of support material, such as copies of recent reviews or publications featuring the artwork, and/ or a letter of reference from someone affiliated with your art career. 8. A Maximum of 10 Images Please submit images via only. Files must be in JPEG or other standardized format with a minimum of 500KB and maximum of 1MB. 3 Important Artist Information: Exhibition will be selected based on the following criteria: o artist s ability to deliver a high-quality body of work with the chosen media o the strength and relevance of concepts within the artist's practice o the ability to present to a small audience, and/ or ability to create a community-focused demonstration o the desire to learn about professionally displaying your work. Once selected, the artist will be paired with a local artist mentor. The artist will be required to provide a progress report 4 weeks prior to the date of their exhibition. Emerging artists will receive a $500 honorarium for their participation in the RISE Emerging Artist Program. artplace will take a 30% commission on all artwork sold during the exhibition. An opening reception will be provided by artsplace. Hub Gallery Designed to accommodate a variety of exhibitions, the Hub Gallery is located in the heart of artsplace. It has five wall sections, coloured yellow in the diagram below, measuring 7.5 m, 3.5, 3m, 1m, 2m. These five sections are all white dry walled walls backed by solid wood, ideal for the hanging of 2D artwork. The high traffic area nature of the gallery makes it ideal for an emerging artist to gain exposure, but also limits our ability to display certain 3D artwork that might be easily compromised or damaged.

4 About artsplace: artsplace is Canmore's community arts Centre - a welcoming, user-friendly space where Bow Valley residents and visitors can gather to explore, discover, and celebrate the adventure of art and creativity through a full range of classes, workshops, camps, live performances, films and special screenings, and exhibitions. Officially opened on September 24, 2015, artsplace is a hub for artists and the general public to create art; to learn and to advance artistic skills; to connect with other artists, arts enthusiasts, and arts organizations; and to showcase or enjoy performances and exhibitions. Activities are designed to reach and inspire all Canmore and Bow Valley residents - every age, background, and ability - encouraging increased engagement in the arts. artsplace features a ceramics studio, fabrication studio, and visual arts studio, The Hub Gallery, and a 105-seat black box theatre that features live performances and also serves as Canmore s only movie theatre.
