3 2011 Information for Schools Aim The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design recognise and promote excellence in senior visual arts education throughout Queensland s state and non-state schools. The awards recognise student achievement in the art forms of visual arts and design. Conducted since 1990 the Awards have helped raise community awareness about the degree of sophistication in concepts, diversity of technical competence, and the high standard of arts education in Queensland secondary schools. The program comprises: submission of digital photographs of student artwork via a secure website for consideration by the Teacher and State Selection Panels; seven regional exhibitions showcasing the work submitted, including shortlisted artworks; a central exhibition in Brisbane and a touring exhibition of the selected works to regional galleries across Queensland; and a five-day residential workshop (September school holidays) for award recipients, conducted by professional artists. Components of the awards program Submission of art work All state and non-state schools offering senior visual arts throughout Queensland are invited to enter up to four students artwork in the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design. As in previous years, student details, and digital photographs of their artwork, will be submitted via a secure website. For DVD works, student details must be uploaded to the website and three clearlylabelled copies of the DVD work must be forwarded to the Project Manager via mail (mailing address details listed on page 7). Schools can now access the secure website through howtoenter.html Submissions for the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design close at 5pm on Friday 22 July To avoid last minute technical problems, it is recommended that schools aim to have their submissions uploaded no later than Wednesday 20 July Late submissions will not be accepted. 3

4 Schools that are unable to submit their student artworks online may contact the Project Manager prior to Monday 18 July 2011 to make alternative arrangements. Schools are responsible for photographing student artwork, and should refer to the enclosed information sheet, Tips for photographing your ar work. Photographs should include an overview shot that clearly shows all elements of the work as well as two detailed shots. Regional Coordinators may provide assistance with photographing artwork. Selection of works Submissions will be reviewed by digital photograph (with the exception of DVD works). The student s name, school, and region will be recorded at the time of submission, however these details will be withheld from the selection panels. The Teacher Selection Panel comprising three senior visual art teachers will convene in Brisbane on Tuesday 9 Wednesday 10 August 2011 to short-list between 100 and 200 works for further consideration by the State Selection Panel. All short-listed students will receive certificates of commendation. The State Selection Panel comprising representatives from the education and arts sectors will convene in Brisbane on Friday 12 August 2011 to make the final selection of up to 40 student works for the Touring Exhibition. These students will receive excellence awards and will be invited to attend the five-day residential workshop in Brisbane. If submissions do not meet the award criteria and standards, there is no requirement for selectors to allocate the full quota of awards. At least one award recipient will be chosen from each of the seven regions view link for regional map ( Up to 16 awards are available for non-state school students. Award recipients will be announced at the regional exhibition openings. The principals of award recipients schools will be notified in advance. S&S Regional Encouragement Awards S & S Creativity Unlimited are the 2011 sponsors of the Regional Encouragement Awards. The State Selection Panel will select one student from each region to receive an S&S Regional Encouragement Award: Regional Encouragement Award winners will receive $250 worth of S&S art materials for themselves and another $250 worth of S&S art materials for their school. Regional Encouragement Award winners will not attend the student workshop. 4

5 Regional exhibitions The regional exhibitions showcasing all submissions at a local level will be held in August and September after judging has been finalised. Schools must contact the Regional Coordinator for regional exhibition details (please refer to contact list on page 12). Student workshop Excellence award recipients will be invited to Brisbane during the second week of the September school holidays, 26 September 30 September They will work with professional artists to further develop their artistic abilities, and participate in gallery tours, studio visits and discussions. The Department of Education and Training will meet the cost of the five-day workshop and parents/caregivers will be asked to contribute $295 towards accommodation and meals. Parents/caregivers will also be required to meet the cost of any optional extracurricular activities. Families who require financial assistance should contact their school principal. The department will arrange return travel for students who reside outside south-east Queensland. Students from Brisbane, Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast will be expected to make their own travel arrangements. Award recipients will receive their certificates of excellence at a presentation ceremony held during the workshop. 6 Guidelines All state and non-state schools offering senior visual arts throughout Queensland are invited to enter up to four students artwork in the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design. The secure website is now open for submissions - The following selection criteria and terms and conditions should be read carefully prior to submitting works selection criteria The student must show an exceptional standard of work that demonstrates: ability to visually interpret, express and communicate ideas from an independent viewpoint innovation evidence of very highly developed visual knowledge and ability in the use of processes and skills ability to make judgements with discernment in the selection and application of highly appropriate media and techniques. Terms and conditions 1. All submissions must be received by 5pm, Friday 22 July All Queensland state and non-state schools offering senior visual arts may submit up to four students work. 3. Only one work per student may be submitted. 4. Work submitted must have been produced by a senior visual arts student as part of the senior visual arts curriculum in Work submitted must be of Very High Achievement (VHA) standard. 6. Work submitted must be the work of an individual student, not the combined efforts of a group of students. 7. The submission must include three photographs of the student s artwork. 8. Work submitted must be in display condition, complete with frames (Perspex, not glass) and hanging devices. It is advisable that large, two-dimensional works be arranged as a diptych or triptych rather than one long piece. 6

7 9. Work submitted must not contain materials that are unsuitable for a gallery and/or confined spaces. This includes hazardous or decomposing materials, flammable materials, barbed wire, broken glass, potting mix, untreated food and other items. Please check with the Project Manager if you are unsure. 10. Work submitted must be able to withstand 12 months of travel as part of the touring exhibition. Fragile work will not be selected. 11. Maximum (overall) sizes of work are: a) 2D = 1.8m high x 2m wide b) 3D = 1.8m high x 2m wide x 2m deep. There is no set weight limit for artworks as long as the piece can be moved. Individual component parts should not exceed 35kg to assist in moving the work. 12. For DVD works, student details must be uploaded to the website and three clearly-labelled copies of the DVD work must be forwarded to the Project Manager via mail to: Project Manager Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design PO Box City East QLD Students will require the permission of the copyright owner of any work that has been reproduced in their artwork before it will be included in the exhibition. Each region has an appointed Regional Coordinator who may assist with the submission of artwork. The Regional Coordinator organises an exhibition of local student artworks entered into the awards. Please refer to the list of Regional Coordinators on page Regional Coordinators may provide assistance with photographing artwork. 16. Regions may conduct more than one regional exhibition and may be required to limit the size of an exhibition for space reasons. It is important that schools contact their Regional Coordinator to confirm such details, deadlines, exhibition dates and other issues. 7

8 17. Schools will be required to complete a Project Consent Form for every participating student. This form is attached to an automatically generated which confirms that a student s work has been successfully submitted online. The Project Consent Form must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned (by fax or post) to the Project Manager before Friday 29 July Each submission requires a statement from the student about the intent of the work, which may be reproduced in the catalogue for the touring exhibitions. This statement should be a maximum of 100 words, written by the student and grammatically correct. 19. For works that require particular arrangements or configurations, when exhibited, please forward a photograph or diagram to the Project Manager at the time of submission. Tips for photographing artwork A successful entry in the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design relies on presenting the best possible image of work. Both the Teacher Selection Panel and the State Selection Panel will be short-listling from photographs. A poor quality photograph limits the chance of selection. Please keep in mind if your artwork is chosen as a winner you will be required to submit a high resolution image for reproduction in the catalogue of over 2MB. Further specifications will be sent to winners at that time. Please note the following recommendations for taking photographs. 1. If one work is comprised of multiple pieces it is recommended that each component is photographed individually as well as showing the work as a whole. 2. Place the artwork against a clean, one colour background, preferably a light coloured wall. 3. Use the best camera available. 4. Make sure the image is sharply focused and fills as much of the frame as possible. 5. Do not take the photograph on an angle that distorts the image. Stand squarely in front of it. 6. Do not use a flash. If the work is behind perspex, photograph before framing. 7. If the work is generally very dark or very light, it is difficult for a camera to automatically calculate the required exposure. If possible, take a number of photographs using different exposures. Try to bracket the exposure by trying one stop more or one stop less, as well as the exposure setting indicated by the camera. 8. If possible, use a tripod or camera support. 9. Adjust the settings on the digital camera or scanner so that the resolution is 100dpi and the image size is approximately 800 x 600 pixels. 8

9 10. Save pictures as JPEG files (.jpg extensions). 11. Before uploading to the website, view the image properties to make sure each file is less than 400kb. If the image is more than 400kb, slightly reduce the number of pixels from 800 x 600. Photograph details Each entry is to be accompanied by three photographs of the student artwork - An OVERVIEW photograph o This must show all pieces and elements of the artwork and TWO DETAILED photographs Three dimensional artworks will need to be photographed from different angles. 9

10 All digital photographs should comply with the following guidelines: 1. Each image must not exceed 800 x 600 pixels 2. Each image must not be more than 100dpi 3. Each file must not exceed 400kb 4. File format must be jpeg Online submission All details below are required for online submission. Please note: Exact dimensions of the framed work are required, estimations will not be accepted. The department has experienced significant problems in previous years with crating works for transport and subsequent display of works when estimations or close enough dimensions have been supplied. To enable us to protect the works to the best of our abilities, please assist us with this request. 11 Artwork explanation (written by the student): In no more than 100 words, please explain why you produced the work, what ideas and skills you used and what the work represents. Please keep in mind that these words may be used for the regional exhibition catalogue. If your work is selected, this statement will also be used in the touring exhibition catalogue. Each submission is to be accompanied by three images one overview shot, and two detailed shots.
