2 02 Welcome to our Chinese New Year Celebrations The Year of the Monkey will officially begin on Monday 8 February, but before then we ll be welcoming two wonderful Chinese artists from Chongqing and Ningbo to Nottingham to work with a broad range of community groups, special interest groups, schools, universities and the general public. Traditionally a family celebration, we invite individuals, friends and families to come together and enjoy the exhibition, workshops, and performances culminating with a celebrated fireworks finale at Highfields Park. SUNDAY 14 FEBRUARY, 6PM University of Nottingham, Nottingham Confucius Institute and Nottingham Lakeside Arts present CHINESE NEW YEAR FIREWORKS FINALE HIGHFIELDS PARK FREE Wrap up warmly and bring the family or come with friends to enjoy one of the most eagerly anticipated fireworks displays of the year, delivered by Mick Bowen and Crescendo #CNY16 NB This event is subject to suitable weather conditions. 3 03 SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 1-5PM CHINESE DRAGONS AND LANTERNS THE CIVIC CENTRE, ARNOT HILL PARK, ARNOLD, NOTTINGHAM, NG5 6LU FREE, BUT ON-LINE BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL Gedling Play Forum and Gedling Borough Council present an arts and crafts afternoon with a Chinese New Year theme. Come and make your own Lantern, join in with various Chinese New Year-inspired arts and crafts, including making bouncy dragons, watching the traditional Lion Dance and listening to Chinese stories during the afternoon. 1PM PM & 3PM - 5PM CRAFT SESSIONS 2.40PM TRADITIONAL LION DANCE 5PM EVENT ENDS On-line booking essential as places are limited. 4 SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY, 4PM - 6PM BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL CELEBRATIONS BEESTON SQUARE, NG9 2AN Have your face painted, and see your name written in calligraphy, taste some treats and try your hand at some Chinese crafts. Enjoy a rich variety of performances including a Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, Martial Arts demonstrations, traditional & contemporary dances, music, lantern procession rounded off with a Fireworks finale. CONTEMPORARY CHINESE DANCE RESIDENCY Push Dance group, an innovative company of learning disabled adults from Broxtowe Day Service, will be showcasing a contemporary dance performance developed with visiting Chinese artist Rong Tao. CHINESE LANTERN PARADE Pupils from Roundhill Primary School will be working with artist, Sarah Palmer, to create Chinese lanterns that will be displayed and paraded at the Beeston Square event. A Master of English Education from Zhejiang Normal University, he was a teacher of English for 22 years before developing his art skills working under Master of Art, Yu Yiqing. In 2012 was presented with a National Golden Prize for Chinese Painting. He is based in Nottingham s twin city Ningbo where he founded the Red Peony Academy of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy at the Ningbo Library. Jack teaches international visitors about Chinese culture through these ancient art forms and to date he has welcomed visitors from 150 different countries. 7 EXHIBITION WALLNER GALLERY, NOTTINGHAM LAKESIDE ARTS THURSDAY 14 JANUARY - SUNDAY 21 FEBRUARY TRADITIONAL CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING AND CALLIGRAPHY BY JIANG HONGSHENG This specially selected exhibition of traditional Chinese art has been curated from the work of our resident visual artist, Jiang Hongsheng (Jack), from Ningbo. It will include scrolls featuring some of the iconic elements of Chinese art, as well as examples of his calligraphy. Since 2012 Jiang Hongsheng has been teaching visitors to China about Chinese culture through the medium of visual art. Many of the items on display will also be for sale and available to take away following completion of the exhibition. For details please ask at NLA s Box Office, next to the Wallner Gallery. 07

8 TUESDAY 12 JANUARY - SUNDAY 14 FEBRUARY RONG TAO IN RESIDENCE Rong Tao is a choreographer and dance artist with a rich professional career. He was Principal Dancer with both the Guandong and Beijing Modern Dance Companies; he has also been Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Chongqing, and Choreographer at the Chongqing Meishi Film Academy. He is also the founding Choreographer of the YuWu Dance Project, providing a platform for emerging young dancers and also working with different abilities within the community. This will be his fifth visit to Nottingham Lakeside Arts to help celebrate Chinese New Year by working in partnership with a range of dance groups in Nottingham and in Loughborough; he will also be collaborating with the visual artist Jian Hongsheng with whom he shares a very particular interest as his work is inspired by calligraphy. During his residency Rong Tao will be making new work with the dancers of New College Nottingham, at Oak Field School, with Push Dance Collective, Nottingham Chinese Folk Dance Group, and visiting a number of different schools in the city to introduce the children to traditional and contemporary styles of Chinese dance.
