FACTOR is the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings. We are a public/private partnership that supports the production of sound recordings by Canadian musicians. We offer a full spectrum of funding programs for initiatives that support the Canadian music industry, including: industry support, live performances, and marketing. All of these endeavours aim to make Canadian recordings accessible to the wider public. FACTOR receives funding from the Department of Heritage and Canada s Private Radio Broadcasters.
Getting Started If you re a first time FACTOR applicant, you should familiarize yourself with FACTOR s language and application protocols before beginning an application. Eligibility FACTOR supports Canadian musicians (as individual artists or bands) to record, produce, and distribute primarily English-language, independent sound recordings nationally and internationally. (For support for French-language recordings visit We also provide additional support for the marketing and promotion of a funded sound recording. FACTOR also supports Canadian music companies (including record labels, distributors, publishers, etc.) through programs that assist in developing business and other activities related to the promotion of Canadian music. FACTOR funding is only available to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and Canadian companies and corporations. If more than 50% of your band or organization is Canadian, you are eligible to apply to FACTOR. You will be prompted to provide citizenship or residency documentation when you apply.
How the Application Process Works Profiles In order to access our online system, you will need a User Profile. This is step one in applying for funding. To apply for FACTOR funding, every applicant must have an Applicant Profile, which describes what type of Applicant you are (such as an Artist, Record Label, Event Producer, etc). You may additionally require an Artist Profile, depending on your selected Program. If you re an Artist, your Applicant Profile will show as Approved once you ve submitted it. If you re a Company, you will receive a Company Rating based on your business activities. Some Applicants will also require an Artist Profile. You will only need one Artist Profile per band. This Profile offers FACTOR a complete picture of your career as a musician, including: discography, touring history, social media, press, and development team. Once you ve submitted, you will receive a Rating of General (formerly Artist 1), Artist 2, or 3. Please note: New Applicants to the FACTOR system will default to the General Rating (formerly Artist 1). If you are applying outside of our twice annual Profile Reviews, this may limit your ability to apply to certain programs. Please take this into consideration when applying. Ratings The information you provide to us in your Profile(s) help us determine which Rating you will fall into, which in turn determines your eligibility for certain Programs. FACTOR s Rating system is based on peer comparison. Applicants (Companies) and Artists are rated based on their relative performance in a number of criteria. The majority of Artists receive a General Rating. Artists who score at the top of the distribution may receive higher ratings, allowing them access to FACTOR s higher-level sound recording and marketing programs. Juries The Demo and Juried Sound Recording (JSR) Programs are the most popular and competitive of FACTOR s Programs. All applications to these programs are assessed by a panel of Canadian music and broadcasting industry experts. The purpose of juried evaluation is to promote a fair and transparent adjudication process, and to ensure that musicians from all genres and all regions of Canada are fairly represented. Members of FACTOR s Jury system are industry experts who are knowledgeable about the genre(s) and regional music scenes of the applications they are asked to assess. Juries are asked to listen to the assessment track(s), review all submitted material, and assess the artistic and commercial merit, alongside the stated goals for the proposed project. Jurors
assign a score based on Program criteria detailed in the Program Guidelines. FACTOR staff calculate how many of the top-scoring applications can be funded, based on the available budget. All decisions are subject to final approval by FACTOR s Board of Directors. There are three deadlines for these programs annually. Deadlines When applying for FACTOR funding, please make a note of our Profile and Program Deadlines. Profile Deadlines happen twice annually. During both reviews, Applicants and Artists may update their profiles for a chance to improve their Rating. At the Annual Review, all Ratings will be reset for the start of the upcoming fiscal year. This year, these happen on: Semi-Annual Review: August Annual Review: February Program Deadlines refer to when an application for FACTOR funding is due. FACTOR uses two kinds of deadlines: a Fixed Deadline is not flexible, whereas a Rolling Deadline is tied to a milestone in your project. Please note: First-time applicants to the Juried Sound Recording and Demo Programs must submit their Artist and Applicant Profiles for review no later than one week in advance of the deadline. All FACTOR deadlines are set for 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on the day of the deadline listed below. Fixed Deadlines Business Development: April ; Juried Sound Recording and Demo: May (new profiles: May 21) September (new profiles: September 17) January (new profiles: January ) Radio Marketing Fund: Round One: April 1 October Round Two: November 1 March Rolling Deadlines* Business Travel, Collective Initiatives, Comprehensive Artist, Comprehensive Music Company, Marketing and Promotion for Non-FACTOR funded Sound Recordings, Live Performance, Songwriter s Workshop, and Video. * Please consult our Applications Deadline page for detailed information on how to apply for these programs.
Programs and Components FACTOR supports a wide range of projects for Artists and Applicants at all stages of their careers. We have outlined some of our most popular programs in this guide, but you should head to to see the full list. FACTOR funding is comprised of Programs and their Components. Your eligibility for certain Programs is tied to your Rating. Within each Program, there are a number of Components that can help you achieve the various goals of your project: For instance, through the Juried Sound Recording Program, you can apply for funding to: record and release a Sound Recording; Market / Promote that Sound Recording; play a Tour or Showcase for that Sound Recording; or create a video for a single off of that Sound Recording. Make sure that you ve looked at and understand the Program Guidelines before you begin an application to any Program. These are available at factor.ca/ourprograms Demo Program Available to: All Artists Artists Rated 3 are eligible to apply for the Comprehensive Artist Program The Demo Program assists Canadian Artists and Professional Songwriters with the production of a high quality recording that may be used as a Demo and/or to be released commercially as a Single or EP. FACTOR may fund up to 75% of the final eligible costs to a maximum of $1,500. Successful Applicants must use the funds to produce one or more professional, commercial-quality tracks. There are three annual deadlines for this program. For first time Applicants, please remember that there is a deadline for new profile submissions, one week ahead of the deadline. JSR Program Available to: General and Artist 2 Record Labels 1, 2, 3 Artists Rated 3 are eligible to apply for the Comprehensive Artist Program The Juried Sound Recording (JSR) Program is meant to assist Canadian Artists and Record Labels with the production and promotional support of a professional, full-length recording intended for commercial release. FACTOR defines a full-length sound recording as six tracks, or 20 minutes in length. There are 5 Components: Sound Recording, Marketing, Showcase, Tour Support, and Video. Funding maximums for the JSR Program are linked to Artist Ratings.
FACTOR may fund up to 75% of the final eligible costs to a maximum of: $10,000 for General Artist $15,000 for Artists 2 Any unused portions of this funding can be rolled into available funding for all subsequent Components (e.g. Marketing, Tour Support Video, or Showcase), to a maximum of: $25,000 for General Artist $35,000 for Artists 2 There are three annual deadlines for this program. For first time Applicants, please remember that there is a deadline for new profile submissions, one week ahead of the deadline. Release (due to be released within six months of the latest scheduled Tour or Showcase date). Please Note: If you have received funding from the Radio Starmaker Fund, FACTOR cannot fund those same expenses. F Live Performance Available to: All Artists for Showcase and Artists 2 and 3 for Tour Support The Live Performance Program assists Canadian Artists by funding a portion of the cost of touring and showcasing in Canada and abroad. The annual maximum for this Program in Tour Support is $20,000 for Artist 3, and $15,000 for all other Artists, of which $5000 can be attributed to Showcase. FACTOR defines a Showcase as a performance for a target audience of music industry professionals more so than the general public. The goal of a Showcase is to attract interest of potential industry partners. All eligible artists may apply for this Component up to $5000. To qualify for either of these Components within this Program, you must either have a Current Release (no longer than 24 months prior to the Component submission date) or an Upcoming
