3 Active Safety 2009 WELCOME >> > Even looking beyond the year 2010, active safety offers potential ways of attaining further reductions in the number of traffic accident victims. It is of crucial importance when it comes to preventing accidents and improving handling and vehicle dynamics with a consequent improvement in active safety. Today, this is one of the prime objectives of vehicle development. In addition to conventional components for improving active safety, advanced driver assistance systems are a key instrument in the optimisation of vehicle handling. They can make a significant contribution to the improvement of active safety. In such matters, DEKRA, an organisation committed to issues of passive and active safety, is a recognised partner of the relevant authorities as well as of the automobile industry and its suppliers. The papers and presentations given during the course of this symposium will deal with the various systems and latest developments in active safety for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. As is the case with all DEKRA symposia, here too, the additional practical demonstrations are an integral component of the concept and count among the highlights of the conference. The symposium is taking place in the Media Center of the EuroSpeedway Lausitz and on the adjacent proving ground and test tracks of the DEKRA Test Oval. A further highlight is the opportunity to participate directly in the demonstrations of vehicle dynamics using passenger cars and heavy goods vehicles, whereby the participants can gain first-hand practical experience on the test tracks. This combination of theory and practice provides an insight into the problem areas concerned which is not only theoretical but above all of a practical nature.
