COURSE OBJECTIVES The bjectives f this curse are t: intrduce students t factrs and adaptive mechanisms that affect the presence f micrrganisms in fresh and marine water envirnment. prvide students with skills in treatment f surface and cntaminated waste water sewage fr husehld industrial uses and municipal supply. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES / COMPETENCIES Upn successful cmpletin f this curse, the student will be able t: (Knwledge based) Understand the micrbilgy f water supply and use f wastewater fr fish culture and agricultural purpse (e.g. irrigatin). Explain sewage (r waste water) treatment under primary, secndary and tertiary treatments. Classify micrrganisms based n envirnmental factrs prevailing in their habitats Fresh waters, seawaters and grund waters)-temperature (thermphiles), salinity (Halphiles), hydrgen in cncentratin (acidphiles and alkalinphiles) and hydrstatic pressure( barphiles) (Skills) Islate, characterise and identify the micrrganisms assciated with huse hld r industrial sewage (waste waters). Identify micrrganisms that are assciated with natural waters such as pnds, springs (cld and warm), rivers and sea. Acquire practical knwledge n kinds f treatments suitable fr waste waters r sewage in ur envirnment. Determine the kinds f antibitics that can be used t cure water brne infectin r diseases. Attendance recrds will be kept and used t determine each persn s qualificatin t sit fr the final examinatin. COURSE OUTLINE Week Tpic Remarks 1 Nature f aquatic envirnment During this first class, the students will be intrduced t natural waters i.e. Atmspheric, surface, grund and stred waters. 2 & 3 Micrbilgy f water supply Students will be taught abut the physical and chemical factrs affect the presence f micrrganisms in aquatic habitat. The factrs include temperature hydrstatic presence, light, salinity, turbidity, hydrgen in cncentratin, inrganic and rganic & 5 Water supply and public Health cnstituents and water current. Students will be taught n hw t use micrbilgical techniques t islate micrrganisms in plluted waters. Micrrganisms assciated with such waters and water brne diseases that are caused by them. 6 & 7 Micrbial flra f surface and grund Students will be taught n micrrganisms assciated with rivers and well waters. Students will be requested t islate sme cmmn micrrganisms that are fund in

5 these fresh waters. 8 & 9 Water treatment Different steps f water in a typical municipal water purificatin plant will be explained and illustrated t students. Students will be practically taught different tests fr water purity such as clifrm test, mst prbable number and membrane filtratin techniques 9 The use f waste water fr agricultural irrigatin and fish culture, industrial and municipal purpses. MID-SEMESTER TEST Students will be expsed t practical way f treating waste water befre its use fr irrigatin and fish culturing. 10 Sewage and sewage dispsal in ht climates; Micrbial aspect f water management; Eutrphicatin and biremediatin.
