Making safe decisins as rad and transprt users - assertive behaviurs as drivers and passengers in varius real life cntexts - minimising distractins when driving, walking and as a passenger.

2 Page 2 Teaching ntes Recent research suggests that at least 14% f all crashes invlve the driver being distracted by smething inside r utside the vehicle (NSW Rads and Maritime). Distractins can take many frms; using mbile phnes and GPS units, adjusting vehicle settings, unsettled and nisy passengers, eating, drinking, smking, and external distractins. This activity challenges students t cnsider the imprtance f minimising and eliminating distractins as a rad user, and the ways in which they can prtect themselves and thers frm harm. Where apprpriate use students persnal anecdtes t generate discussin n distractins being a significant risk factr fr drivers and ther rad users. Resurces/materials that need pre-preparatin Driver distractin fact card sheet (Appendix 1) printed and cut int 5 individual facts. Activity 1 What is driver distractin? Class discussin: Hw wuld yu describe a driver distractin? What are sme f yur bservatins r experiences with driver distractin? Hw ften have yu seen drivers using their mbile phne while driving? Shuld the fcus nly be n hand held devices? Why r why nt? In small grups, students list their tp 5 driver distractins. Cmpare the brainstrmed list t the reprt in GEARED. Students justify their list in cmparisn t the list n GEARED. Grups categrise their wn list and the GEARED list int fur types f driver distractins: Physical distractins Visual distractins Auditry distractin Cgnitive distractins Discuss: Why d sme distractins fit int mre than ne categry? In what ways culd sme distractins be mre dangerus than thers? Select three distractins and describe strategies that yu culd use t minimise the risks fr yu r yur friends?

3 Page 3 Activity 2 - Get the facts: Driver distractin In small grups, students read and review the infrmatin n the Get the facts: Driver distractin cards (Appendix 1). Discussin is based arund the fllwing: Why d yu think driver distractin is a wrldwide cncern? What respnsibilities d yu have as a driver and a passenger in relatin t distractin? What respnsibilities d yu think gvernments have in relatin t driver distractin? Activity 3 Managing distractins The fllwing activity is designed t allw students t experience the challenges f perating a car while being actively distracted by a number f different surces. Ask fr vlunteers fr the fllwing rles: driver driving instructr hazard prvider recrder. Set up five chairs t represent a car. Rles: Driver carry ut the act f driving, including changing gears, steering, turning the steering wheel, using the break, acceleratr and clutch. Driver instructr tell the driver hw t get t yur huse frm here. Give them specific instructins, e.g. turn left, right at the rund abut. Hazard prvider in a lud vice, tell the driver abut yur day and everything yu have learnt s far this week in all f yur subjects. If yu run ut f tpics, tell the driver all abut yur family. Recrder recrd a tick every time the driver demnstrates gd driving actin. Recrd a crss each time they lk distracted, fail t indicate, take their hands ff the wheel. Allw students t carry ut the scenari fr as lng as they can. If time allws, give ther students the pprtunity t perfrm each f the rles. Discuss: Hw well did the driver cpe with the distractins? (ask the recrder t prvide feedback) Is this a realistic driving situatin? Why r why nt? What makes it difficult t drive the car well in this scenari? What is the respnsibility f the driver in this scenari? In pairs, students discuss and list strategies hw the distractins in the scenari culd be managed.

5 Page 5 Get the facts: Driver distractin Appendix 1 Card 1 - Get the facts: Driver distractin Driving Distractins and Crash Risk Rads & Maritime (NSW) At least 14 per cent f all crashes invlve the driver being distracted by smething inside r utside the vehicle. As many as 1 in 10 fatalities have been directly attributed t driver distractin. Even thugh surveys have shwn that 98% f peple believe that using a mbile phne while driving, is very dangerus, 28% f peple admit t ding it themselves. Card 2 - Get the facts: Driver distractin Driver Distractin Fact Sheet - Office f Rad Safety (WA) It has been estimated that distractin played a rle in 32% f all rad crash deaths and serius injuries in Western Australia between 2005 and Results f a recent study f serius crashes in Perth fund that ne-third f all the crashes studied invlved a distracting activity. Apprximately ne-third f all distractins appear t be utside-the-vehicle distractins. Between 15%-20% f all distractins appear t invlve driver interactin with technlgy.

6 Page 6 Card 3 - Get the facts: Driver distractin Mbile Phnes Yung Driver Factbase Hand-held mbile phne use while driving is banned in all states f Australia. Research has shwn, whether in hand-held mde r in hands-free mde, mbile phne use increases reactin times, speeding and attentin lapses, as well as the risk f crashing. The risk f crashing increases fur-fld, while the risk f driver death is between 4-9 times higher than when nt using a phne. In Australia, 9% f yung drivers reprted using a mbile phne in their mst recent car jurney. In this study, cmpared t lder drivers, yung drivers rated distracting activities such as mbile phne use as significantly less risky. Other reprts find nly 28% f yung drivers view using a mbile while driving as hazardus, which suggests many yung drivers might nt cmply with a ban n use if intrduced. There has been a marked increase arund the wrld in the use f mbile phnes by drivers. The distractin caused by mbile phnes can impair driving perfrmance in a number f ways, e.g. lnger reactin times (ntably braking reactin time, but als reactin t traffic signals), impaired ability t keep in the crrect lane, and shrter fllwing distances. Text messaging als results in cnsiderably reduced driving perfrmance, with yung drivers at particular risk f the effects f distractin resulting frm this use.
