Geriatric and Palliative Care Intensive Review COURSE DESCRIPTION A competency-based, hands-on a teaching venue, this 2 & 1/2 day course will focus on geriatric and palliative care crucial topics. The course will feature short case-based didactic presentations, teaching pearls at the end of each section, the use of standardized patients for practice and small group formats. Each of the three days will focus on building different skills: Hands-on clinical encounters, specialty care and quality improvement processes. Participants will take advantage of close one-on-one mentoring and networking opportunities. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the end of this continuing educational activity, the participant will be able to: Identify, assess and adequately treat major geriatric syndromes Master communication techniques used among inter-professional team members, families, and patients in palliative care and geriatrics Discuss ethical and quality of care concerns related to both palliative care and geriatrics HIGHLIGHTS Plenary Sessions and Discussion Interactive Small Group Workshops Focus on Quality Improvement Standardized patients to practice clinical skills Latest Evidence-Based Knowledge in Geriatric and Palliative Medicine WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This activity is designed to meet the educational goals of healthcare providers working in internal medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, palliative medicine and oncology. The course is geared towards practicing healthcare professionals (physicians, nurses, social workers, etc.) who care for complex older adults and seriously ill patients and want to update their clinical knowledge and skills in Geriatric and Palliative Medicine. Activities will emphasize inter-professional learning. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION The UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Medicine designates this live activity up to a maximum of 23.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
